A brutal finish to a long two weeks. Less than 5 miles in was a 1.2 mile climb, average 9%. This is deceiving as the climb was staircase with pitches in the upper teens and one that matched my steepest ever, 23%. I rode 17 miles through the streets of Yonkers, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan before reaching the Greenway down to Battery Park. Unsurprisingly, there was no marker to note the end of the trail.

Second-to-last day served up the toughest 40 miles of the ride thus far. Continuous up-and-down with grades as high as 18% and consistently in double digits. The last "planned" 30 miles was on sweet Rails-to-Trails including the world's longest elevated pedestrian bride over the Hudson River. Then I ended up in the wrong town 10 miles from my hotel.

After a serious line of thunderstorms rolled through Malta at 12:30 AM, I glanced at the radar and realized a window of "dry" opportunity had opened. I departed at 4 AM and made a direct line to Albany where chances of storms were greatly reduced. I rejoined the Empire State Trail. Stopped for the night in the very bohemian town of Hudson. Two days left.

With forecasts indicating that heavy rain would hold off until 10 AM, I pulled everything together to get on the road early. An brief rain shower delayed departure until 4 AM, but I managed to roll into Malta right at 10 AM. After a quick "second breakfast" at The Ugly Rooster, I managed to just beat the rain to the hotel.

After an extremely warm, humid but pleasurable break in the action on Thursday, I was back on the road heading south. Temperatures were cooler and the skies were mostly cloudy. I encountered some pretty severe weather damage in Exeter NY, and got rained on in the same town I punctured in heading north. Tomorrow will be another potentially wet day. Fingers-crossed.

After yesterday's climbing-fest, it was a relief to have a relatively flat round-trip to the Canadian Border from Plattsburgh. Once again, I got an early start to beat the heat (but not the humidity). Rest day tomorrow to prepare the for revisiting yesterday's stage, but in reverse.

I started Day 7 very early, anticipating humidity (check), heat (check) and lots of vertical (also check). Then I had my second non-sealing puncture of the trip on my rear wheel and lost an hour. Crazy steep climbs (thankfully on pavement) but in the woods, meaning I could out-ride the mosquitoes. Hopefully better luck tomorrow on a short 50 mile jaunt to the Canadian border and back.

Scheduled an early departure to try and beat the anticipated heat and humidity. The planned route was mapped on Rt. 22 for most of the way. The Empire State Trail, on the other hand, decided to throw in a few "curves".

Day 5 was meant to be an easy 62.5 miles...until it was an "adventure" in getting lost and encountering a very chilly start. Still...71.5 miles was still the shortest day thus far.

Day 4 of my Empire State Trail Charity Project to raise funds to support The Dale Association's Senior Center in Lockport NY. The route was almost entirely paved, with the exception of 3 miles of gravel. First puncture that didn't seal 43 miles in, so had to put in a Dynaplug.

Day 4 was a bit more bite-sized than yesterday's 110 miles. 71 miles in cooler temperatures, cloud cover for the first 36 miles, and a nice tailwind for the last 20 miles.
