    I was a copilot in one of the B25s with DonHackett on the movie. Lot of crazy dangerous flying. We also had our PBY civilian landseair amphibian on the movie set in Guyamas. Don got Parmount studios to pay for us to fly it down as an “ airsea rescue” plane but only used it to take movie people on side trips during filming breaks down Baja. I hage a lot of time for Rowland White's writing. Well researched an always engaging coverage of the subject matter. Of all his books i've read i have to say i am finding Harrier 809 the hardest to get through. It seems heavy and plodding compared with something like Vulcan 607.

    Yeah. Wikipedia is dominated by the political left. It's difficult to get a good balanced perspective on issues when there is so often a particular strong political bias, even bigotry in some cases. They love to throw around the "conspiracy" canard as a typical pejorative for issues and people they don't like or can't really understand.

    Thoroughly interesting account of being a 'Tiffy' pilot, an amazing story. The operations those guys flew were very hazardous as Harry attested. When I moved into the street where I live 12 years ago here in Australia, there was an ex RAF Typhoon pilot living two doors down - he had a large painting of a 'Tiffy' in his lounge room. And up the road and around the corner there lived an ex RAF (Polish) Spitfire pilot and his neighbour was ex Luftwaffe fighter pilot! There was no bitterness between them.

The plane was flown to Pittsburgh in the early 70's in a traveling airshow as "MM", then got repainted as "Daisy Jean" it retired to Route-19's Forest Lawn Cemetery . . .It disappeared one year. . and I read that it was bought by the "Confederate Air Force" and is still flying, repainted once again under a new name.

    I think it was SAC that made a weekly non-stop flight w/ the massive B36 from Texas to Alaska, flying over the big urban areas along the way, to show the most citizens possible that their taxes were indeed going to a program that would protect the US from any Russian Communist threat. In the SF Bay area [CA], one flight would be over the Peninsula and SF; the next flight would be over the East Bay and Oakland, perhaps for maximum program visibility. I can still remember the "approaching" deep-pitched ROAR of those Huge props and the Six Massive supercharged Three-row "Corn-cob" engines, a sound that transitioned to Even More prop Roar, combined w/ the Scream of the four jet engines that hung under [and ahead of ] the wings, near the wing-tips, as the Big Bird passed over, headed for the Arctic Circle and the DEW Line... It was LOUD ; it was a Show ; And Not at any great altitude; the windows rattled, and the leaves on the trees trembled... That was in the 1950's; we were kids playing ball in the street, after school...

    • @damcasterspod
      @damcasterspod Před 10 dny

      Lemay's dream was speed, he wanted to replace the B-52 with the B-70 Valkyrie, which didn't work out too well for him. He also insisted on keeping the B-58 in its SAC role within SIOP. So even though the B-58 was tested as a pathfinder for conventionally armed tactical fighter-bombers, it never had the chance to be used used in a different role. The decision to cancel the Hustler was made well after Lemay's departure from the USAF.
