I got injured, so I built something different

A while back I had a woodworking injury. I didn't talk about it in any of my regular videos and had been sitting on this project for about a year and a half. Now that I have this channel it seemed like a good opportunity to tell the story.
Thank you and be safe!

    Love what I’m watching. From experienced to novice you do a really great job of showing what needs to be done and how to do it extremely well. 💯 You’re B-Roll shots of gluing up, cutting, sanding, finishing or joining are done really well except if you know what a pair of retro infrareds cost. And how they are coveted, as well as some of the other tires you’re rocking. Some of us IYKYK. 😊 Thank you for the hard work you’ve put into these videos and the pieces. It definitely shows. ✌️

  • @christopherchapman8893

    I'd be interested to see what you guys would come up with for bookcases and/or complimenting pieces to these desks. Maybe you have already posted a video like that. Not sure, but great stuff as always! P.S.. I appreciate how you enjoy the design and drafting part of the builds as well, especially the concept artistry. I, (although nowhere near your level), enjoy that part just the same, and keep a book of all my plans and concepts for future look-sies.... Cheers!

    Nice build. Shit happens. When we stop thinking... Had my nephew help me on a big door replacement job. Let him cut casing on the chop saw. Briefed him before he started... "If you don't touch the blade, it won't hurt you." "I don't want to call your mom and tell her that you can't count to 10 ." He did good. The more time we spend working with tools, the greater the chance of injury. Me? I've spent years with my skilsaw guard chalked up. No problem. It's respect... I did mitre my left long finger on a table saw doing a free hand tapered rip. Stopped thinking. My fault... Fast food napkin and electrician's tape allowed me to finish the job. Vitamin E and Bourbon helped the healing process.

    The gaskets you can get to go around windows and doors that stick on so they soft close would be perfect to go on the part where the stand contacts the guitar, iy wouldn't be overly gordy and likely unnoticeable when the guitar is on it, while protecting the head.

    I feel for the broken wood with clear epoxy, it might have looked better for the epoxy to be on the bottom of the legs to give an almost floating effect, but that's just my take on it! it looks great as it is now!

    how often have you used the epoxy without the black addition? seeing the inner edges of the 'bug holes' would have been very neat!

    Probably not cheap but a bronze plate attached to the base would stop any warping of the wood. Could use some nice brass bolts as well.

    If you want to do that angled bass, maybe you could do another nod to guitar building and embed carbon rods in the base, same as many builders do in guitars. You can get them as square pieces or hollow rods, and they make necks absurdly strong.

    • @AdamBath
      @AdamBath Před 13 dny

      Also, tip for enlarging holes by hand without tearout, run your drill backwards. Seems counterintuitive, but I've used this on guitar building for volume pot holes quite a lot.

    THIN FRONT EDGE: I saw that someone else suggested a breadboard, but a *literal* breadboard doesn't seem like it fits your vision here. That said, maybe you can get the *effect* of a breadboard with a strip of metal on the underside of the base? Here's what I'm thinking: take a 2" wide metal plate as long as the width of the thin edge of your base. About 3/8" back from the front edge, cut a series of short slots. (Maybe you can find someone with a waterjet cutter?) Now, since you've already got a big brass rod at the top of the piece, you can reuse that design element along the front edge of the base: use brass pins through the top, with a threaded hole tapped into the bottom of the pins. You can route out a space for the metal plate, run your piece through a drum sander to remove the wood *and* the brass, and then you just need to attach the brass pins to the metal plate. (These pins will also act kind of like the heat-set threaded inserts you can use to connect 3D-printed parts using screws. Maybe call them... pinserts?) You don't seem to mind using bolts and washers to fasten C channel onto the underside of your slabs, so if you don't mind putting some machine screws into those pinserts, you're done. Or, hey, if you want to be extra about it, you've already cut, drilled, and tapped a bunch of brass pins. Maybe make twice as many, then epoxy some threaded rod the end, screw the whole arrangement into the pinserts with a pair of pliers, and then cut the ends flush? IDK, I'm a software developer, not a machinist, so maybe just stick with machine screws... :)

    I had a similar accident with a router bit on a finger. End of the day, tired, doing a bunch of repetitive routing for cabinet doors. Just spaced out in my hand placement. Like you it didn't really hurt until later but it sure scared me! To this day I know that I should stop when I'm tired, even if I know I am "almost" done -- turns out you are never "almost" done and can go on too long!

    Would using a drum sander instead of the planer work to get that base taper you were looking for?
