Learning to fly and getting my private pilots license was always a dream, from riding bikes to the glider airport or nearest general aviation airport i was awed at an early age. Attempted to do ground school at a local community college, but life got in the way and never finished. Fast forward about 35 years and my daughter arranged to have everyone chip in on the ground school materials and intro flight. It took another 3 years and finally said "do it". In 1998 the journey began at the age of 42. I was hooked. Got my PPL and then flew (a lot) and bought a 1977 C172N (25ES) model from the flight center and redid the engine and interior. Earned my instrument rating in that plane and was embarking on a new journey in flight. 2003 came and found me at a cross roads of life with marriage woes and subsequent divorce (not because of the plane). Plane had to go. Fast forward , renting on and off over the years, major gaps between flying and currency and finally said it is time to get back.
HAVE WE FOUND THE BEST AVIATION HEADSET ? (yes it is a LONG video)
A review of the audio quality as we compare 4 headsets , Bose A30, Lightspeed Zulu 3, Lightspeed Delta Zulu and Bose A20. Coming from a "sound guys" perspective for clarity and functionality of the ANR features, as well as in flight characteristics. Sound recorded on a portable zoom at 24bit/96khz sampling in each ear cup. Enjoy ! Hope it helps you in making a decision and not being disappointed. Of course YMMV and this is my audible opinion .

Another snow attempt foiled - just some pattern work at Tracy KTCY
zhlédnutí 188Před rokem
Wanted to fly around the snow that hit No. California over the last few days, but with windy conditions over the hills and low ceilings, ended up making turn back to the airport and just did some pattern work. A wee bumpy, but all good.
IFR to KWVI, well sort of almost - pilotage decision making

Day trip to Oceano hoping that the weather would open up. This is where Pismo Beach and the Dunes are, but we did not get to go to the beach due to low ceilings and getting trapped on the ground, since there is NO IFR departure procedure from this small airport on the coast. Lots of scenery over the Salinas Valley and heading down south to Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo.

Fantastic video. Not just to see how the GFC 500 works with the rest of the avionics, but I am new to IFR, so nice to see as many IFR flights as a I can.
Thanks for watching ... IFR is amazing...just have to stay on top of and ahead of the plane and flight plan...
We did the same thing Saturday, but the low clouds over the peaks blocked most of the good snow. Great to see the new video!
thanks , I wish it would have worked out better to video thru the hills but I have done that before going to monterey and got my butt kicked being a wee too low
I doubt 90% of pilots can really tell a difference.
Probably true, but when you are doing stalls and slow flight , that is when it is extremely noticeable as the plane just does not want to stall
Thanks for sharing. I had my first encounter with carb ice this week in clear, cold skies. I heard the roughness first and thought maybe I had overleaned. When enriching the mixture didn't work, I thought maybe I had a bad mag. I checked each sequentially and about the time that I ruled out the mags, I noticed a power drop and it finally clicked in my head. It was definitely an attention getter.
totally agree , it was holy smokes what the heck ?
I know this video is several years old, but it’s the best one I found so far showing step-by-step how to do the vertical aspects of the 500. i’ve been having problems with my 650 and GFC 500 coupling the vertical glide path. Thanks.
thanks for watching !
I did a run up on my plane the other day. No flying because of rain and ifr conditions and wanted to check everything out. I missed the initial engine roughness and developed carburetor ice and the engine shut down. The things we overlook because we get distracted can kill us!
True and sometimes just the little things, then they all add up to a BIG thing
Nice video, perhaps next time you could pause the commentary so we could hear the whole ATIS which would have added nicely to the whole scenario
Good idea! I will try to remember to do that
Also appreciate you inclusion of flight data/speeds/gps/radio etc. Super helpful. Good "Flight Following" teaching aid as well.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Thanks for creating the videos. Lots of work for sure! I really appreciate it on days I can't fly. Chair flying and finding little tidbits of knowledge etc. Your honesty about "errors" and decisions are appreciated. 😀
Glad you like them! Thank you for watching
Awesome video thank you. Grow some. LOL. 😜
Working on it!
I have a similar setup but with the Garmin 530w rather than the avidyne. Still learning to trust the GFC 500. At what point did you push the APR button? It looked like it was after HIXAR. Thx for the video
I believe it was but now finding I can hit the APR a bit sooner than crossing the final fix. the approach does come alive on the G5 prior to the fix and goes into APR mode. if not selected prior to , it does not capture any vertical glide path
Perfect if not excellent videography!
Thank you for watching, much appreciated, hopefully more coming soon, somehow lost my log in info and finally got it all back and working
Thanks for posting. Excellent video and very instructional. I'm a newer pilot in the Bay Area with about 500 hours. I'm curious and I guess it's the nature of the beast, but is everyone so freaking engrossed, like me, with listening to NorCal nonstop, frequency changes, aviate/navigate/communicate, traffic avoidance, that "sightseeing" or the ability to relax at all of any sort seems just impossible? I land and all I can remember is what I did working the airplane, even with the AP on, and sadly only maybe the briefest recollection of enjoying the sights and vistas at all. The transitions through here are so deadly serious for all of us that I'm devoting 100% of my attention to aviate/navigate/communicate. Plus, I'm always forward thinking about what I should expect. I find it a wonderful challenge, pride in airmanship and communication, and all of that gives a certain satisfaction and a self-pat on the back. However, the non-stop attention to the radio traffic and "all that" for me takes the "fun side" out of the trips. It's quite a workload that's for sure. Comments?
Yes, flying thru the SF bay area sometimes is a real radio and see and be seen work load. it does depend on time of day and how nice of a day it is with other airports like KPAO and KSQL training going on , along with Oakland and Hayward arrivals. Sometimes we just get down low and cut between SQL and PAO airspace and just listen on NORCAL to see how traffic is flowing in and out of SF Bay Area. But, yes some days you are so busy with traffic and chatter that it does take the fun out of it. However, as you state, it is rewarding to be listening and spot on with NORCAL and keeping pace with the big boys flying the commercial flights...some don't do that and frankly quite annoying to have the controllers have to repeat over and over to them ... thanks for watching !
Hi. I was going to leave you a question on your other video about GoPro Hero 7 but unfortunately the comment section on that video is disabled. I have a Hero 7 black and the cockpit audio wires from Nflightcam. For some reason I can barely hear the audio. I tried messing with the mic input settings (standard, plus etc) and it didn't help. Did you run into the same problem initially?
I will have to look into that commenting part... no, I run the audio from the back set jacks into the adapter for the GoPros or sometimes OSMO Action. What audio panel does you plane have ?
@@fortheLoveofFlight Just a standard general aviation audio panel (not sure if it has a specifiey name). I've tried 3 different Piper Warriors and had the same problem. I then replaced the cable. I've seen several comments on CZcams about the same issue.
Honestly I have not had any issues with the GoPros and audio...even Edward Frye has not had any issues, I have forgot to plug it in and also activate the rear audio jacks...but that is more cockpit error...
How did you record your audio, Did you plug in directly to the camera or did you use an external audio recorder and dubbed it into the video itself?
Audio is direct to the camera from the audio adapters to the GoPro or OSMO. I use the back seat jacks to the adapter and feed it that way. I use a canned airhorn to sync all the audio to the cameras , which I edit out , but works really well to get the sync spike for the audio on all of them
Did you forget to set the G5 to minimums on the ILS after GS intercept?
would have to look again, but the 530 does not give out "minimums" like other systems do, you would only get a tone within 1000/200 feet
Nice job on the energy management. We routinely are in prime conditions for carb ice, here in western Washinton. Any time I feel the slightest tick from the motor, I pull that knob. A good visual indication are the con-trails off the prop. Sometimes they aren't seen, but on the replay of the video.
Cool, thanks and thank you for watching ... will keep this in mind....
I'm new to the GFC 500. Had my 2nd lesson using it yesterday. I noticed you hit the HDG knob (not button) to sync the heading bug with the TRK frequently. I just learned that from my instructor yesterday! Did not realize how important that was in case ATC asked you to unexpectantly turn to a heading. Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot from your video.
Great, happy it helped you ... thanks again for watching
Double check the point you put on the carburetor icing probability map. Instead of using 5°C on the vertical, dew point depression axis, you should have used 0°C. That is because your OAT minus dewpoint gives you the dew point depression (5°C - 5°C = 0°C). Still squarely in carb icing territory. Nice flying, and way to keep your cool!
thank you ... it was not a pucker moment as the engine was still doing ok... but it still does get your attention fast...
Beautiful Skyhawk
thank you ! it has been a work in process but it is a keeper for sure
Did Avidyne add the vnav yet? I have a gns430w in my aircraft and confused between getting the dual g5s and gfc500… or the Dynon & ifd440 with no autopilot as their autopilot is not stc’d yet for PA28
Not yet, would be nice , but in a 172 I am not sure it is needed , just don't go that fast .... the IFD work great with the G5's
does yours shoot LPV approaches fine? I read about LPV being up to 200feet off after FAF (GFC500 +IFD issue). In your video it looks like GFC500 was flying slightly off the right of the centerline during the approach although enroute looks dead on track.
Well it depends... some are great and some are off a wee... kinda strange , I shoot the 30 approach and sometimes spot on and others off to the right . Same with KHAF where I have had similar experience .
awesome video. can you do a tour of how you setup the cameras in your cockpit
Yes I will, give me a month and I can get it done ...
@@fortheLoveofFlight thanks so much! Love the videos as always :)

Does your altitude hold take commands from your G-5 or the Auto Pilot face? Thanks for the info.
It is set on the G5 and then translated to pitch in the panel mounted autopilot to the servos, once at a fixed altitude you and adjust the hold altitude in 10 foot increments to the next 100 feet up or down ..
@@fortheLoveofFlight Thanks. I will see if they can set mine up like that. Maybe need some additional wiring to accomplish.
Why not mount a tiny camera inside the carb and keep an eye on it inside visually
We have carb sensor we are going to install with our new JPI930 primary replacement panel in the near future
L52 - One of our favorites also... you waited just long enough to sneak in there. Did you make it out of there ok? Is there a Part 2?
Thanks again for watching. yes snuck in and out, things were closing in so fast that I did not have a chance to reset cameras as there is no IFR departure procedure out of L52
Great video. I just finished the webinar on carb icing, and learned a lot. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching
Just to make sure I understand. You turned on the AP and then I noticed that you never took your hand off the yoke. Once you hit the AP button the AP was in control you just kept your hand on the yoke right? The AP was flying the plane correct?
Jesse - I always keep the hand on the yoke (well most of the time), I just like to be on the safe side for traffic or and unexpected auto pilot event.. but yes, after the AP was engaged it did all the flying down to the point of disconnect on final.
Nice setup but what made you go with the IFDs over the gtn xi since you have a gfc 500. Vnav is a great feature.
The ease of the replacement was the main factor, no new panel work, which was needed for the Garmin replacements and some rewiring as well. The IFD's just slid right in and new panel work , no wire and I did it all myself, did the log book entries and was done. All legit per the FAR's since no wiring was done and considered maintenance vs. something that would take an avionics shop to do. I think in the future they will get the VNAV to work ... or hoping so.
Hands down IFDs are 10 times better than GTNs! I used to ❤️ GNS or GTNs, till I play around with IFDs. My set up is G3X, IFDs, GFC500. everything works perfectly! Hopefully avidyne will fix the VNAV soon. The new software update 10.3 will have lots of improvement. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. Just put in new Avidyne radios...video coming soon.
Kind of risky flying a 172 in the mountains like that. If you were to get a bad downdraft at that altitude, you would have never been able to get out of it.
Yes in retrospect I should have been over 10K feet , but mistakenly figured at that time of the AM would not run in to any bumps..I was incorrect on that assumption
What mount do you use for the outside wing cam? The one that faces the fuselage.
Just using the stick on go pro mounts, the flat ones, clean with alcohol first and they stick fantastic
Fly to I80, keep it near, and climb to 2k feet above the mountains.
I agree that would have been a better option for me ... now over a year later I am better with the turbulence , but still not fun...
NORCAL was pretty much offering you direct AUN without the dogleg at LIN. Any particular reason you didn't want the shortcut? Nice video and congrats for getting your ticket wet.
I wanted to get into flying to the filed flight plan. I wanted more time in the clouds. Direct would have not been as much "IFR" vs. the route to the LIN VOR. Thank you for watching , much appreciated !

Nice work with the IFR comms. It was very pretty when you broke out of the clouds on approach to WVI over the water. Better luck with your side cams next time!
Thanks 👍 for watching !
Nice video! Quick question on the wing tip lights. I understand that you are using AeroLEDs Pulsar NSP. The wig wag function appears to be connected to those lights. Is it the position and strobe light synced, while the nav (green/red) remains unchanged? If so, how did you set it up? I understand the wig wag set up on the landing lights, but this one seems intriguing!
On the strobes, we did not, there is a 4th wire on each wing tip position light and a 3rd wire on the tail position light and when all those are connected the strobes all sync up. I wish we would have done that at the install time, as it would have been really easy with everything open. I have a dual position Cessna switch controlling the position/strobe lights so that the first pull is the position and second pull is both
@@fortheLoveofFlight perfect! I am about to start my Sling TSi build and try to figure out the details. Thank you for your answer
Loved this video! Did you use the same mount in all the spots and what mount was it? Does the DJI work via a phone app or just controls on the camera?
all angles used standard go pro or OSMO mounts either stuck on the planes surface or clamped to headrests, etc. I have not looked into an app for the OSMO , I just use all the on screen controls and use a small airhorn to sync audio to cameras then edit that out , thank you for watching, much appreciated

Hello, Could you share your setup to record cocpit audio from intercom with Osmo ? Thanks
Yes I can - let me see how soon I can do that
@@fortheLoveofFlight you do it that way right ? Taking the audio from intercom into Osmo ?

@@fortheLoveofFlight Hello again ! I ve tried smth similiar to your setup but I got a problem maybe you can solve. While someone is talking, the audio is broken and turn to internal mic of osmo for less than a second and it repeats. It only happens when someone talks via intercom. And also I cant get clear voices as much as yours. Do you have any idea ? Thanks in advance
check if the camera audio is set on AUTO level ? it may be too much signal and is over driving the input of the OSMO. Also make sure all connections to the OSMO are good and tight. Thanks for watching! the panel upgrade was about the cost of the airplane .... thinking about a 180, but holy smokes it is costly , and I can replace the 150 HP engine twice for that amount .... thanks again for watching ...
I jumped around a little bit, but it really seems like you were low and it would have been much better for you to go up to 9.5 or so earlier on. If you had an engine failure, it would have been mere seconds before you were impacting trees.
yup, after dissecting the flight later, it would have been a much better choice and most likely would have not encountered all the bumps around the squaw valley VOR
