In Episode 5 When the first Rebel transport ship escapes Hoth the Empire never attempted to destroy the transport and just let the transport pass them. All the Empire did on Hoth was destroyed the shield generator then they left after Vader was able to get inside the base. When the Falcon escaped in front of Vader he didn't use any force powers to pull the Falcon to keep it from leaving. Then Vader and the Empire just leave instead of taking the remaining rebels on Hoth as prisoners. The Empire and Vader's goal wasn't to kill rebels on Hoth. Their goal on Hoth was to arrest the rebels who were involved with destroying the Death Star.

The dark side (not the empire itself) is much more reasonable. The empire comes a little more to the extremist part and is a dictatorship, but the republic is no better. They are a bunch of corrupted and selfish economical tyrants. That is why the problems began in the first place. Yes, palpatine was behind most. Bit the system was already heading that way. He only took advantage of it. Overall... The Republic is bad, the empire is not much better. But regarding the force, dark side are much more reasonable than the light side. Jedi are puppets and puppeteers, sith are an empire themselves.
