      This is exactly what I’m talking about! At my previous corporate job we would get a quarterly magazine and in the back were peoples names listed for anniversaries, promotions, retirements and passings. It always shook me to see that some people did NOT enjoy very long retirements… that’s why I’m starting this project now. Thanks for sharing. 🙏👍🙌

  • @BrianSimpson-tk3xj

    Great stuff but epoxy, especially in a non-structural elements, requires very little clamping pressure. Vacuum clamping for filler parts like the anchor locker floor is a waste of your time.

    If you're having take the old core out, why not refill with resin and skip the core materials all together.

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail Před dnem

      The core is 3/4” thick. That’s a lot of very expensive resin… it also has poor mechanical properties when it’s not combined with glass (think of cement without rebar). It would also be incredibly heavy and would make the boat less stable. If you mean, why not drill a bunch of holes in the wet deck and inject epoxy like some do on CZcams… That’s not actually a repair. Nothing will bond to wet and rotten balsa or ply or the old deck skins. Will it seem more solid after? Probably. Is it as strong as the original design was intended to keep you alive in a storm? Certainly not even close… For me, with goals to go over the horizon, a proper repair is worth the blood, sweat, tears, and $$$. 👍

    Just did this on a NC42 system i picked up for $200. Like new now! Only problem is i have everything here to install except furler extrusion tubes, i have the joining sleeves, bearings (the plastic inners) grub screws....but no aluminium extrusion tube! After doing some hunting on the net its going to cost about $2500!!! Which is a ridiculous amount for aluminium tube. Im considering getting the C42 profile custom made which is possible and i can supply other guys who run into the same problem.

    i would ve removed the wooden braces, to avoid any future maintenance. and avoided the aluminium altogether, by inserting (potentially, im not saying they would have to fibreglassed/installed), some vertical pannels to avoid any sagging of the coosa board, sure its more work and money but you also create space for compartments and im not one to forego that chance! mind you i have a 29 footer, i think that contributes alot for this mindset aahahah what you fibreglassed is already stronger that what the wood might be doing. i always fibreglass on top and bottom, always 2 layers of 400gsm biax. one is always tempted to make everything flush, straight, right angle, what have you, but in reality what we want is to promote water running....to someplace where it can collect, be extracted and without pooling in places where its presence will promote problems. so actually you wanted that coosa board to have a slight slant both atwarthship and fore and aft so any water, and you will have water there, will run down to a better place. ppl will say oh but its never going to be much water. and i will answer that 90% of collisions happens at the bow, so you want water to run to a place where it actually promotes the stability of the vessel and where the bulk of your pumping ability is wired. its bad enough having to deal with emergencies, worst still when the boat is leaning because water is just better at self leveling than us. nice work as usual!

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail Před 3 dny

      Some really good thoughts here. Good advice about the pooling water. I will think about that. I didn’t laminate the bottom of the Coosa since I didn’t need more strength or waterproofing from the panel. Just impact resistance. 🙌👍

    Keep plugging away I am 2 years into a full rebuild of an 1980 58 foot Bertram I spent the better half of 17 months in a boatyard with many setbacks from registration/documentation, delays for different reasons. I had no knowledge of boat building or refitting and had two guys that were helping me and kept encouraging me to fullfill my goal. Being on many forums they all told me to expect the reality of 3 times the amount of work you anticipate and 3 times the cost so all I can pass on is don't give up. • @livingforsail

    I always sand my coosa with a coarse sandpaper on my orbital sander. You never know if contaminants are on the coosa even from factory. It is also vital to vacuum the surface after sanding as there is a fine layer of dust that fills the pores and can lead to delamination. I also acetone before glassing but I am using vinylester resin.

    • @livingforsail

    Great video so honest and heartfelt. You two are wonderful and Bridget is a dream for supporting your efforts. I see that you lost your friend John back in March. I had a major medical event back in Feb, heart attack, my LAD was 100% blocked, fortunately I was to get to the hospital and had a stent inserted. I am back to the new normal, only difference is the meds I need to take. I too have refurbished/restored a couple of boats over the years. First one a 1964 Cal 40, which I raced from SF to Hawaii in 2016. Then redid a 1988 48' Californian motor yacht. I really liked doing the Cal 40 more and love to sail. I retired in 2023, before I knew about my heart problem, so you've got to believe in your dreams and make them a reality, and not postpone. As you never know what will happen down the road, carpe diem! Love Yacht Hunters, Captain Q and Randall. I miss Captain Q and all his wisdom. Randall, time for a new video! Right now I am in Amsterdam on my 44' van de Stadt sailboat, I bought last year. Enjoy being on the water and retirement. Keep the effort and enthusiasm going you will make it!

      Hello and thank you for saying hi! I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed this “unvarnished” video. 🙏 Wishing you the best with your health, retirement, and finely crafted Dutch boat. I actually have lived in Eindhoven for about a year in total in 2-3 month bursts over a few years. Great times!! Good people. I appreciate the support!! Prost! 🍻

    to house the prism, you could take some of the old teak deck, plane it, and build it up with some pretty joinery, and have a raised portion, that you can look at to remind you of how many screws you removed....

    Hi John I was always obsessed with wiping everything with acetone like you , and even did what did in a previous video and ripped up some wet epoxy work because I forgot the pre wipe with acetone, I’ve since been doing some reading watching some west system videos on CZcams and west systems themselves actually recommend NOT to do the final wipe with acetone , they say wipe BEFORE you sand , then sand and dust it down or vacuum, this apparently is the best surface to apply epoxy to , from what I’ve been reading they say you can re spread contaminants over the freshly sanded area , also I’ve read on some forums that wiping it down with acetone can actually melt the nice sharp edges of scratch’s you have just put into the fiberglass so you don’t end up with as much mechanical grip when come to laminate, this is on a microscopic level, but I can see the point 🤔and one other point I’ve read ,some people say that when you wipe the area over any dust on the surface turns into a slurry and gets deposited to the bottom of the scratches and this also can affect the bond , I can see why all three of these could have some truth to them , but this from What I’ve read just related to epoxy , the only exception to this is bonding oily woods like teak as you already know , I’ve now switched my approach and I’m skipping the final wipe down ,

      Thanks for this! Some very good points to think about. I can appreciate that a good clean to START with and then Sanding with new and clean disks is probably just about as good as you can get. I will definitely consider that as I move on. Thanks for sharing that! 🙌👍

    Great video, love to see the mind of a mechanical engineer. I always tell my clients to buy a boat from an engineer if possible. Y’all really go in-depth on everything. Most people wouldn’t even think to touch the chain locker, y’all not only touched it but even had a mock up with ideas to make it better, love it, keep it the great content coming for us obsessed sailors. As for the chain tube, I’d certainly keep it straight and centered for a multitude of reasons explained in the comments. Great build though y’all, love the details, love the effort, love the little things. Spectacular A+ and what an awesome boat. Stoked for y’all. Cheers

    Expanding epoxy foam? Has anyone used it?

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail Před 12 dny

      That’s more common for filling molded parts like a rudder for example. It would be a challenge to get an even core thickness with expanding foam for a deck.

    Considering your height and need for more headroom in the cockpit, if you were re-rigging with a NEW mast would you still increase the stive (as Bob suggested, which means cutting the sails differently) or would you increase the mast height and raise the boom (no change to sail)?

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail Před 12 dny

      IF I were starting with a new stick I would probably get help making a design with a flat boom a few inches higher off the deck. Moving the gooseneck is not completely out of the question but mine is welded on so it will probably stay where it is. I was relieved to hear from Bob that a bit of “stive” is no big deal. Good Q. Thanks! 🙏 🙌👍

    Pls talk more about garbage! It’s a big problem not well addressed on almost all boats, esp. those that like to keep garbage separate for recycling (paper, plastic, tins, wet / food waste). I have a 45ft and it’s driving me crazy trying to come up with a plan.
