Yes, I’ve used them several times on my trucks diesel and my marine gas BB V8. The BB Chevy marine, no wear, and detergents were in great shape. We don’t use it very much, only a few weeks every summer…

Hey Jon, great idea to get the oil analysis done -- I had it done regularly on my tractor when I drove over the road. One thing though ... when starting a motor that has sat as long as that, I would have removed each of the injectors and squirted some oil into each of the cylinders. You can do quite a bit of damage to cylinders and rings by running the motor without lubricating before turning the motor over -- it can take a few minutes for the oil pump to get up to full pressure and distribute the oil to the top end. What's done is done now though, and hopefully the oil results will come back in good order. Walter Schulz (founder of Shannon Yachts) did a great tutorial on starting up a motor that has been sitting for a long time with Randy of Captain Q fame -- it's worth a watch!

Thanks for another great video John, I learned a ton. I never realized oil analysis could tell you so much about an engine and I will definitely have that done when I get ready for a bigger boat with a diesel power plant. I'm anxious to see whats in store for that windlass...I bet it will be grand. Cheers!

One oil analysis just starts a baseline. Pulling oil for analysis on a region basis will give you a great idea on the health of the unit.
I’m looking forward to starting the record keeping on it. I think I might have them take a look at the ATF in the velvet drive too…
As a fellow engineer I need to pass on this advice to you. You should always bar over a diesel engine by hand two complete revolutions (so that each cylinder goes through all four cycles valve wise) - it is the only way you can detect if water has got into any of the cylinders. Barring it over by hand you will notice if it starts to ‘hydraulic’ - the starter motor not so much - but enough to cause damage. It’s a complete pain in the arse but the only sure fire way. I use to do it as a daily penance on 2MW diesel generators - life was tough.😉
That’s solid advice! Since I’m not in the water, I wasn’t too concerned about any flooded cylinders but it is a good thing to mention. I’ll add that to my list for next time! Cheers!! 🙏👍🙌

Well Jon, you got my curiosity going! I wanted to do this to my Ecoboost Twin Turbo Ford F150, that was ordered with every towing option on the list. I tow a 9K travel trailer and have 117K miles on it at this point in time. It would have been nice to have gotten one within year 1 and then now to compare, but I guess now is as good a time as any. I have maintained the truck to all maintenance schedules with oil changes every 5K miles. We shall see what happens. Fingers crossed. Good luck with your oil analysis. Great video!

I use Blackstone all the time… As a matter O fact, I had a buddy that ran synthetic that told me about them. He had remote filters on his 6.3 ford diesel. Every 10k miles he would change filters, take sample, and top up synthetic oil. Send sample to Blackstone and saved saved saved on oil usage!
I have a 454 BB Chevy in my boat. She’s 30 years old and only 600 hours. Sent sample into BS and that old motor is excellent shape.
Oil tells ya a lot and this is how you can save $$$$ ££££ €€€€€€😊

One potential tip for diesels, is very often today, Diesel Fuels are sold without any added lubricant i them, and same for Heating Oils, so i mector pumps, and boiler pumps are wearing at a rapid rate. Ive found that a good lubrication additive can be Synthetic Two stroke Pil, which can be a very chep buy if bought end of season, or a cheap Synthetic engine oil, at say a 100 : 1 ratio, so should be enough to do the needed lubrication content ? It’s true that the new ULSD (low sulfur) fuels have less lubricity than the “old” diesel. At least around here…. The marine/off-highway “red” diesel is SUPPOSED to have higher sulfur content and may not need extra lubricant. If you have an old diesel truck that runs on the road, this might be a bigger issue…

As is your wont, you again gave us great and informative content. If we are playing guess the content of this package, my bet would be a 24V motor, a 24 V contactor, and a rebuild kit for your windlass 🤓.

Heidi and Franny used Blackstone to analyse oil from one of their Porsches (Boxster I think) , oddly they now have a sailing channel. Heidi also cut the filter open and opened up the pleats to look for any metal particles that might be as a result of a failing engine part..in the case of the Boxster this would be the IMS bearing but might be worth doing too.
Looking forward to getting that old windlas fixed up.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. I’m curious to know how they tell that from oil analysis alone. Coolant and fuel in the oil?
Always use a quality oil. I use nothing but Castrol and Rotella. One of the worst things is to send in a cheap oil. It does not help the analysis. Thermal breakdown of oil can happen at normal temps with a cheap oil. Try the old frying pan trick, NOT the Wife's! Drop of oil in a frying pan and see which ones last. You will be amazed by the results. There's a reason I use only Castrol where I can. Everyone thinks its because I am English, nope castrol is still refined overseas and they can burn off all the impurities. Oil refined here in the States can not burn off all the impurities. The impurities are what cause the oil to have a low thermal breakdown. Same goes for rubber products. Sorry I get on a roll sometimes. Been a mechanic and fabricator for a very long time.

Very interesting video. I have my Atomic 4 in my shop and am rebuilding it currently. It would be interesting to perform an ail analysis after is it broken in from the rebuild. Your engine looks brand new compared to mine. Also tell Joe from Blackstone that his microphone is WAY too small. 😁
Yeah, I had mic envy… I had an A4 in an old sailboat (hence the reference to feeling your pain). Ours was raw water cooled and it showed… finicky little engine but it was usually there when we needed it. Best of luck with your rebuild!

If you decide you are going to change engine . You'd be mad , parts for ford d series , major engine are available all over the world. Keep it , use it
