It's great if you take care of it ahead of time. I thought you were going to show how to take a high tuned snare and tune it down in pitch without killing it. (I know there are ways and things that will do that).

After listening to your channel a while I can't believe I never noticed how loud the snare is in rock songs. Recently, we've been playing 80's metal on Sundays (at this little coffee shop I work at). I was amazed at how the snare was the loudest element and pokes out through all the ambient noise on a busy day. Can't believe you did this video. Great topic! I never appreciated the low fat tuning of a snare until recording one. I think there’s something magical about the microphone responding to the drum head flexing when being struck with authority. It’s like a boxer laying into a heavy bag on the backbeat. Chefs Kiss 🧑‍🍳

go back to BSB early tracks, literally no lowend. Crap decisions by labels and radios probably... It was shit. Then later on some stuff definately changed.

i notice a trend toward the snare almost sounding like a Tom - a thick sound - kind of reminds me of the sterile sound of the chilli peppers drums sound - that seems to lose a lot of the natural crack and snare wire sound ..... .just subjectivity i know, but i dont like it- On the issue of cymbals -i almost think they should be down a lot more in the mix -almost be ambient ....but of course, thats again , just me

I never knew what a difference the snare tone made in the the mix as I mostly play live and it’s harder to hear the nuances. Great piece , it’s changed the way I listen

Interesting trick, I’ll have to pay more attention and see where I can spot this in the wild. Lots of high tuned ones out there - Pearl Jam, Police, RHCP. The guitars on this track sound fantastic as well, any tricks there you can share?

Good advice. Been leaning towards lower tuning on my snares live and it seems to be working out as well.

Ah what timing. I’ve been watching a lot of “Isolated Drums” vids on CZcams lately, including lots of songs produced by Mutt Lange and two things immediately jumped out: 1] The snares are tuned low; 2] even in the early 80s they were using drum machines or samples all over those tracks! Thanks for showing why.

Everyone needs to know and learn this,wrong snare is bad

I actually like the sound of the first snare better. The second one sounds way too compressed and gets lost in the mix. Maybe that's just my ears. I have noticed that snares in today's production have way too much compression and there is no"crack" of that natural sound. Just my opinion though. I am also a drummer.

Another trick to attack this problem is using a transient plug in a way most never do on drums,..remove some of the attack - not increase. I know that sounds like sacrilege to a drummer but it works sometimes when other things don't. The fundamental and it's pitch isn't always the thing causing us trouble in a recording. It's the tick or pop of the stick hitting the drum head when it's pitched high especially. It's just too much of everything in that place. In a recording, that component can sound like someone drumming on a kids metal toy drum or table top. The attack can weasel past the compressor and pull down the body and be the dominant thing. As you lower the attack,...you'll start to hear less pop and more body and snare sizzle appearing. Just enough to work for the overall song yet keep the snare showing up at low volume,... should you still want it pitched higher. Just throwing that out there as I re-pitch/re-tune as well. Transient plugs are interesting though as they don't have a sound like a comp. In my opinion anyway. Sorry for long winded post. Cheers. 👍
