    David Bendeth’s expansion for Steven Slate drums are incredible. He’s a superb engineer!

    I literally just figured out that auditioning trick you did with Battery. Where you load up the samples and just change the midi note. It’s kinda embarrassing, but I’ve been either switching the sample out every time or printing a bunch of samples and doing it that way. lol. Sometimes it’s the little things. 😂

    1:22 Speed the track up to 150 bpm, add a descending synth filter sample (I'm not a producer, so I don't know the technical term lol) to the snare, and you have the Talking Heads' "Take Me To the River" drum track (at least the first couple bars).

    Great stuff. One question: In a quieter verse, do you automate the volume of the sampled snares lower, or do you maybe use a different sample with a lower velocity or do you even delete the sample layer when you don't need more punch? Is it common to only add extra drum samples in the chorus to create more contrast with a verse? I think an extra snare layer can often be too much in a simple verse with minimal instrumentation.

    • @BobbyHuff
      @BobbyHuff  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Great comments as all of those work!! I normally trim back the layer of samples to start with and automate after that if needed.

    hey Doc, is this specific sample pack different and or better than Bendeths sample pack thats available for Slate? hes got a pack for steven, have you heard it there and what might the difference be vs the one youre reviewing. thanks as always!

    • @dbendeth
      @dbendeth Před 3 měsíci +2

      Bobby, on my previous sample pack there were two snare drums and one kick drum. The Slate pack was also an expansion pack with trigger. The Drumforge pack is only a one-shot pack at this time, with over 25 snare drums, multiple kick drums, toms, handclaps, and stomps. The new pack also includes far superior versions. The Slate pack is now 9 years old.

    That beat with the samples reminds me of the late Eric Carr on the 1982 Kiss track "I Love it Loud" with that big room sound.

      In the USA the note is Bb, in Europe, it would be a G, plug in and play along. It comes free with the bonus pack.

    Hi doc! How are you? I have a question: when you add a sample to a snare for example (either one shot or tci multi velocity), do you tune the sample with the same fundamental frequency as the original snare of your recording? Great video and great samples, David Bendeth is a great inspiration! Thank you for the video! 😊

    • @BobbyHuff
      @BobbyHuff  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the kindness and great question! I try and pick samples that ring with the live snare in a sympathetic way. If I love the sample but the overtones are terrible with the live snare I’ll tune the sample. Great question

      I let the drummers natural ghost notes come through the live snare and bottom snare mics. No samples on those.

    So your doctor of sound. You tell us to put in our earbuds and then all we hear is a ground loop.
    What's your hearing more than most likely from the samples is parallel compression. Mystery solved.

    • @BobbyHuff
      @BobbyHuff  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for the reply. I can promise you that if I added parallel compression to the live drums vs using these samples the difference would be drastic. There is massive tonal, and depth shaping going on here as well as eq shaping.

    • @maxammo6282
      @maxammo6282 Před 3 měsíci

      @@BobbyHuff yeah and when you're done playing with your EQ take all of your drums send them to a bus. Put a light compression on that. Now make another bus exactly the same. Compress the shit out of it. Now mix those two buses together. Go ahead and try it and come back here and let me know what you think. You're welcome.

    • @DontWorryImAPilot
      @DontWorryImAPilot Před 3 měsíci

      @@maxammo6282 I'm the last person to fawn over someone like Bobby. Not because Bobby isn't awesome - he is - but because I just don't do that.
      Bobby is well aware of parallel compression. I'm a full time producer/mixer and I'm using parallel compression on every mix. Bobby is 100X more accomplished than I am and has worked with the best. He is experienced with parallel compression. He might have even made a video about it! These Bendeth drums sound bonkers good. I'm sure there's some parallel compression baked into the one-shots but it's also about the million details necessary to get it to sound so great that Bendeth does absolutely uniquely as good or better than anyone else. Ever.
