Karen Pryor Clicker Training
Registrace 14. 07. 2006
"Clicker training" is the popular term for the training or teaching method based on what we know about how living organisms learn.
First widely used by dolphin trainers who needed a way to teach behavior without using physical force, operant conditioning (the scientific term for clicker training) can be and has been successfully employed with animals of all sizes and species, both domesticated and wild, young and old; all breeds of dogs and puppies, cats, birds, leopards, rats, rabbits, chinchillas, fish, and more.
Clicker trainers who learn the underlying principles have at their disposal a powerful set of tools that enable them to analyze behaviors, modify existing methods for individual animals, and create new methods where none previously existed. This flexibility allows the tools of clicker training to be re-invented in new forms that work in a range of situations, and for an infinite variety of animals.

Hey your videos are coming in my news feed for few days now your video quality is really good i watch your videos carefully every time the videos are good but not seo friendly u can now tell what is the full meaning of seo search engine optimization example in other words after a person comes to youtube he searches for the keywords he needs and searches for videos related to those keywords. Thus, you need to SEO your videos with the help of popular keyword research tools within the title description tag area of your videos. Keyword research needs to be done and set up. Later, if a person searches with keywords set up in the middle of your videos, they will see your videos at the top and grow organically.
Brilliant conversation by all involved here! Really appreciate the time that everyone here takes to try and better our industry.
Why do you need a head collar which is a force-based and punishment tool, if your positive reinforcement approaches are "superior in every meaningful way" as you claim?
But is the Train Your Cat course suitable for kittens too? Thank you
Super interest guest, as usual. Susan is so well spoken and clear. I would love to hear her input on « degrees of freedom » and how they can be used to change/increase behavior or increase the probability of an animal saying yes instead of no. Maybe a subject for another appearance?
This episode was very useful - some adjustment in ways of presenting this valuable information - excellent. Thanks
Ha! I have a very different personality from Ken, but we had all the same answers!
I feel really fortunate to live in a time where we can listen in on a conversation between Ken Ramirez and Susan Friedman on the nuances of negative reinforcement! Thought provoking and insightful discussion.
Wow... this is truly amazing! You are amazing! Thanks for opening my mind to possibilities beyond what I can imagine! 💞
I'll be honest - I was surprised at organizations that do positive reinforcements with animals but not people. We need to clicker train the boss ;)
I love public speaking BUT I didn't learn to fear it and I had lots of positive reinforcement from the 4-H clubs. I won awards etc. It does make a difference.
Question - I would like to train my yard squirrels to stay out of the bird feeder and out of the road when cars come by. Any suggestions? Yes, I do love my squirrels. I placed another food source for them but they are little geniuses about getting around everything to go to the bird feeder.
We are ATD certified and are going to be going to MUSC dental clinic for clinical trial on dogs with patients and with out they are going monitor the their vitals.
Therapy dogs are to be pet by the public at a location
YES ❤ And later on you will gather the reward, when you find out that your dog can always find his/ your way back to the car, your home, whatever. With such a dog you’ll never get lost again ❤
Oh this is awesome. I’ve gotten used to holding a clicker in such a way to also be able to use that same hand. But this would make it far easier!
This takes way too long. I’m not finishing the end, but I hope someone can knock out the door and the dog doesn’t bark and what happens two days later when the same things happen it was my dog and he doesn’t seem aggressive. I would probably just go to the door and open it up and let those people in but that’s just me.
Do you talk to members of that nation? Reach out to chapter houses and such? Do you rescue within those nations? What rescue is this?
We need more dog training and behavioral specialists!! It’s so important for unsocialized dogs to have more of a chance ❤ great interview.
This organization rocks!
Awesome interview and content. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Learning that this is a cultural thing and not necessarily a lack of concern for their dogs is helpful to approach differently.
Dr. Spaulding is a kind & thoughtful teacher!
Do each dog do this ,
SO BRILLIANT! loved this one
Love , love your shows!
Dr. Spaulding nailed this interview. So educational!
Fantastic. So glad that I caught this hour! Off to buy the book -- and get a copy for a friend. Please invite her back again and again!
Kristina 🎉so smart, and I think we are kind of neighbors (she is saratoga and I live 30 minutes to the north in Warrensburg, NY)I’ve got the book last year…think I should re read it again. It’s been helpful with my fearful and sensitive 3y Golden Retriever. Thinking I should reach out to book a lesson (if she offers privates) 👍🐾🖤
Thank you so much for this topic. I found it very useful. I'll be looking at the book!
I continue to be deeply grateful to you for doing these Live From the Ranch videos!!! Please keep going.
Amazing work!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
super interesting! thank you!
Well done to all who are working on this project ❤ . 😊😊😊😊 AMAZING !!!
wow! That's amazing.I'll support crowdfunding to keep it going
And, we see ourselves opposite in a video/photo. Most of us are not used to hearing our voices - as others hear us. It can be surprising - it's not bad. It's just not what we are used too. Love this.
Love these tips. How about a video for coaching sports. It's skill and performance.
My dog got less reactive when I stopped trying to send away from the door & started saying let’s go see who’s there
When will this class enrollment open ? :)
Very interesting, thank you. It gave me great ideas on more things to practice before our upcoming vet visit with my people aggressive dog.
I'm not happy that after paying for your book "Don't shoot the dog" I can no longer download it from the Amazon store, why did you remove it?
I am in the Younger generation of groomers, with the fear free certiflcation, working in Portugal.. I feel extra-lonely but totally in love with the job
Besides I have very few clients comparing other groomers on the area😢. I
Thank you for this information; I will be taking this class. I have a dog that is terrified by the vet and we saw a canine behaviorist. She sent me these inspiring cooperative care videos of things like porcupines getting jugular blood draws. I thought that this was just an impossible kind of goal for me and my dog and the thought of trying to do something like this in the actual veterinary setting was very intimidating/frightening. Thank you for discussing handler fear too.
Beautiful ❤
I agree that the dog's behavior should be the bottom line. My girl would be wonderful as a therapy dog. However, as she meets people, she jumps up and muzzle punches them in the face! I was hoping that she would reserve this special behavior just for me. Alas, this is one behavior that she generalizes! She's four and doing it less frequently. Maybe when she's 8 she can go out and spread her love to others!!
It is too hot in Az for pack walk. What other suggestions
In Canada, Saint John Ambulance Therapy Dogs has been in existence for over 30 years. Dog/handler teams must be evaluated and certified and insured through their certification program, and are invited to do regular visits to care homes, hospitals, high schools, universities/colleges, airports, and other places. Once the teams have worked with adults, there is an additional certification for dog/handler teams to work with children, one of which is the Paws 4 Stories program. Handlers must train their own dogs for the program, so having a resource like this course is wonderful.
My 18 month old boy has started barking at vehicles that approach my van from behind. My boy is in a wire crate in the back ofthe van. Hopefully it will extinguish. But if it doesn't, I'd love ideas.
Was looking forward to listen to this, but unfortunately the audio and video freezes up so much for Emma, i couldn't hear a good deal of it. I still watched the whole thing bc wanted to get as much as i could from it.
she IS hungry 😄
