  • If you have ever visited a dentist who proceeded to fill a cavity without considering your readiness or comfort level, chances are you dread going to the dentist. The same apprehension is felt by dogs. A dog that is handled at the vet or the groomer without having a choice to opt-out will only become more fearful of veterinary and groomer visits. n this video, KPA CTP Shelby Mildenberger demonstrates how incorporating tactile cues into cooperative care not only helps dogs to accept procedures but also teaches them to be active and empowered participants. Note how the handlers use muzzles as a safety measure when needed, and always wait for the dogs’ consent (chin rest) before proceeding. They keep their touches brief and rate of reinforcement high!
