How To Not EXPLODE: Somatic Exercise for Anger, Anxiety and Dissociation
00:00 Introduction to the Containment Exercise
00:14 When to use this exercise
1:50 How can this exercise help?
2:31 Begin somatic exercise: Containment
In this video I offer a somatic exercise that may have the following affects: 1) Help you manage or contain your anger, rage, or anxiety, and/or 2) Help you come "back into your body" if you are dissociating from your body.
This skill is known as a containment or consolidation exercise in Somatic Experiencing. When we have a lot of angry or anxious energy in the body, we may feel like we might explode. On the other hand, when we are dissociating, we may feel fragmented and "not here or whole." This exercise can help with either of these physiological states.
By pressing your hands and thighs together with equal and opposite force and feeling the effects, you are:
1. Organizing/consolidating the energy in your body, giving it a purpose, intention and direction
2. Containing some of the energy internally, becoming aware of your body's edges/boundaries
3. Discharging some of the energy through muscular action to lower the sympathetic activation/charge in the body
4. Becoming aware and curious about the effects of this exercise on your body

I keep having ads pop up for somatic workouts. It costs money. Of course. I finally decided to research on CZcams somatic workouts. I mean, obviously somatic workouts are on my ad algorithm for a reason lol This is the first video I decided to commit 13 minutes to. I was skeptical watching this video at first. I felt weird. I felt especially weird when I was rubbing my arms on my bare legs (I'm wearing shorts, not pants lol) But then I started to relax and let it be. I felt a weird sensation in my left armpit while rubbing my legs. The friction while rubbing my legs was also bizarre. I didn't like rubbing my bare hands on my bare legs. But I kept doing it. And it brought relief to my back. The craziest part of all was what you suggested next. To put my right hand under my left armpit. WTF were the chances of that? My damn left armpit was feeling all weird (and still is) while rubbing my legs and then you instruct me to essentially soothe it? Girl, I was skeptical but now I'm ready to watch some more. You got me crying, experiencing weird sensations, and then having me soothe the exact spot that was uncomfortable. I am a skeptic no more. Thank you for providing this resource. That shit hit deep and to think that it's free. Okay, Ima go ahead and hit next now. I'm ready to watch (or listen, rather) to some more. 13:05 minutes of my life well spent. No pun intended.

Thanks for sharing. That’s not weird at all. Sometimes our body just feels the impulse to cry without the release of tears. This may be because your body needs more safety or softening before the emotion gets expressed outwardly.
