as someone who was obsessed with anime at the time dreamcatcher released chase me, i was immediately hooked because it sounded like an opening to a shonen show and i used to tell my friends the same thing as well. also i think there is absolutely no coincidence that ppl who like dreamcatcher also like ateez. they're both my ults and i just saw ateez live a few weeks ago and bought tickets for dreamcatcher in november lol

Girlypop are you alive?

I got into them with this album. We Know and Silver Light are on the same tier as good listen. Both because Wooyoung and Yeosang sing so much more, especially throughout the whole album. I love Wooyoung’s pre-chorus and his “I know” sounds soooo good. I live for Yeosang’s part in the bridge. The backing of it reminds me of O Fortuna, but not the opening of it, the part at the forte/fortissimo. The outro with Mingi’s and Hongjoong cemented this song as one of my faves. It’s so intense. As for Silver Light, I love that Wooyoung starts the first verse and is followed by Yeosang. Someone said in another comment section that they loved the part where Wooyoung scoops his voice upward and I absolutely love it as well. It happens about 43 seconds into the song. I heard and saw Crazy Form on a TikTok then looked up the album and saw it was released a few days prior. Took me two tries to like Arriba. First time I quit before Mingi’s part, the second time I was driving home and was passing a hidden cop so I was focused on that and Arriba was on and then Mingi’s part came on and I was like wow 🤩 I love how he’s doing this. I don’t know how to explain it, it’s staccato, bright(?), airy in a way because the flute in the background, and then we get Mingi’s regular sound for the last bar. It’s so catchy. I like how it flows right into Hongjoong’s verse. I need Jongho’s bridge imprinted on my brain. Especially the part where the background voices harmonize with his (I’m a sucker for a good harmony). Matz is also not my favorite. I thought Seonghwa’s voice was too forced in its deepness. I do however like his “pay” parts. The plosives are perfectly put 😉. IT’s You is my favorite track from the album BECAUSE it’s so sensual. I will keep saying that they need more songs like it because Desire is another sensual ditty that I absolutely adore, but I digress. I was so happy that Yeosang had an entire verse and he killed it. I like how in the first few phrases there is a beat where he pauses before moving to the next. Then he’s singing on the down and up beat with the “show show flow flow” part. To the lovely part where it’s the flow-y “airplane” section. It’s all just so well suited for him. San’s pre-chorus is one of my favorite parts from the mv and all he’s doing is walking backwards doing hand motions in a line with the other dancers (I’m also a sucker for ripples I guess😅). Wooyoung devoured the chorus and his high note. I didn’t realize it was him for a good long while. I thought it was San. I vibe with Youth as well since it feels really r&b. Their slow songs/ballads (except for Mist, it hits me in the feels) don’t really do much for me in all honesty. No hate or anything because the vocals eat every time in them. I like the album as a whole, but Ep. 1: Movement is my favorite of The World series.

It took me a while to like Bouncy as well because their b-sides are just that good. Dune is my favorite from Outlaw partly due to Yeosang’s/Yunho’s prechorus(?). And the rest due to Wooyoung’s/Yunho’s bridge. It’s an almost seamless transition between their voices, except for that beat between the voices.

Gosh, I love this analysis. I especially liked the “moving forward” portion because of what you said about him singing and dancing at the same time. I likened it to Michael Jackson in concert. He wouldn’t always hit his notes because he was so focused on dancing and trying to catch his breath while still singing. If it was difficult for MJ, The King of Pop, then it would definitely be difficult for someone only 5-6 or so years out from debut. Wooyoung is so very talented and I’m fairly new to Ateez and K-pop (end of Nov. 2023), but I’ve noticed so much improvement from him looking at their older videos and listening to older songs in their discography. Inception and Halazia are two of my favorite songs because of his parts. Then The World: Will came out and I fell in love with his parts in We Know, Silver Light, and Arriba. I’ve also been loving his parts in Dune. The ending “oooohhhhh” that he does is next level! To the point I thought it was Jongho, but I listened to the stem of the song and about perished when I heard Wooyoung. Anyway, I really look forward to hearing your analyses on the other members, keep up the good work.

First, thank you for the post. I am always curious about how the fans perceived PK and if the events are mutually enjoyable. I am absolutely all-in Plory so it was good to see/hear a casual listener perspective. I was particularly interested in your comment about the English translations of their songs. Of course they are trying to be considerate of their fans but like you said most of the fans, me included, were weaned on the Korean versions of the songs. Their songs have always had some mixing of English but for the North American audience they have done further translation and you hit the nail on the head that notwithstanding the intent the live audience can not sing along because now, ironically, the lyrics are in English. Personally I think that the original version, the one that everyone is accustomed to is what they should stick with and then when they are engaging the audience they can try to speak English. I would encourage you to spend a little time browsing Purple Kiss content and music because I am sure that the more that you engage the more that you will love them. Halazia is what triggered me to search Yeosang voice analysis. And I'm not someone easily moved by voices. His voice in Halazia is outofworldly.

The most important thing I wanted to say was Yunho's opening part in the collab with PTX Need a Little Space makes my brain purr and I'm hoping you have a good way to describe why lol Yunho's vocals are my favorite after Yeosang's chest vibrating low notes. Also, Wooyoung's part in Mist is soooo hhnnnnggg KQ give him more parts like that please! Also, also, I appreciate when you acknowledge their faults and where vocals have been touched up. So often kpop fans just want to praise their favs but for me it takes away from the praise when you don't acknowledge where there is room for improvement. Gentle productive criticism, especially when paired with praise, does not equal hate. I struggled to get into Ateez for a while because people praised their vocals but when I went looking for it, all I found was Jongho's high notes, touched up "live" vocals that people didn't realize were touched up or untouched live singing where the backing was so loud you couldn't hear them anyway. So I didn't really buy that they were that talented vocally. (Which is a big thing for me, my ults are a.c.e and onf. I see that clip of Chan in your intro! If you don't know onf go at least listen to Beautiful Beautiful. It's worth it, I promise.) Then I watched the killing voice video, which is for sure touched up, but also still so good! (Also Yeosang is adorable in it and he became by bias and I became Atiny by the end of that 26 minutes.) Anyway, your videos are fascinating and articulate some aspects of their vocals I appreciate but didn't know how to explain. I have choral and music theater experience but no real music theory training. Sorry for the essay, looking forward to your next Ateez video!

Every time I look up who is singing my favorite parts in Ateez songs it’s almost always Wooyoung and that’s how he ended up my bias lol. He’s incredibly under used vocally and I so appreciate this analysis

Yeosang is my ultimate bias for Ateez, partly because of his voice. Thank you for saying that his has a special voice that should be used much more. I was hoping after Halazia that it would happen but I am still waiting/hoping.

Your analyses are so enlightening! Wooyoung's voice is my favorite, especially when he sings confidently. His voice has that "something" I like amidst the heaviness (and I like dark R&B and heavy, loud music in general). Even when he doesn't have a lot of lines, I can hear his voice in the harmonies or backing vocals. I would love it if he continues developing his voice and finds his sound if it's something he wants to do. Otherwise, I'll just enjoy whatever he lends to Ateez's discography.

As a yeosang stan that fell in love with Ateez altogether SOLELY because of yeosangs part in say my name, I found this video very, very needed (I was frothing at the mouth the whole time), since most people don't really appreciate what yeosang can offer with his voice, not just inside the team but also outside in the occasion we get more covers or solo songs (having him sing an OST is a dream of mine), while I understand why a lot of people don't pay that much attention to his vocals, I need them to recognize he's not only a pretty face and heart, but also a gorgeous voice!

As the biggest fan of jeong yunho's vocal stability I'm looking forward to your video about him! These past two vids have been some of my favorite vocal analysis videos I've seen in a while

i definitely believe that Treasure era Wooyoung didn't have the vocal ability to carry a chorus which is why he got like no lines (like consistantly less than 5s) when they debuted. and then Fever era Wooyoung could carry a chorus, but others members a) have just been doing it before, so they just continued and b)could do it better than he could. You see definitely now they are playing more with the type of lines each member gets which is why even jongho (though still consitantly having the most) gets less lines as they are giving air time to different members now. honestly, this whole process seems really fair which is just a testament of how well Eden knows Ateez
