    I've seen some of your videos and I think your teaching is excellent, really clear, useful and never too demonstrative. Regarding ergonomics and the left hand position, this is just my opinion and my oersonal experience, the inclined fret principle found on the Ibanez Q series is an interesting option. More guitars should be built with this feature, combined with a lightweight multiscale - 26.5 and 27.5 for example - this will help to reduce left hand tensions.

    I picked up that book. It seems like no matter what I do, I have pain in my wrist and back of hand.. i feel like I definitely play with too much tension, but I am at least pretty conscious of keeping a straight wrist as I do have some classical guitar training. I never really have wrist pain when I play classical or 6 string guitars. I don't think I have wrist pain when I play bass either, so I don't know if it's the scale length. I do have an RGMS8, which has the neutral fret on the 12th which as I understand it is pretty different from most fanned fret 8 strings. I truly don't know, but I really want to get this under control before I stop being able to play the guitar entirely. It's frustrating and kind of scary honestly.

    Awesome video, great information, but I have a small... caveat for it. I don't think that F# Standard tuning should throw a wrench into things, since we already have a B and those notes are an octave or two apart and the F# is up a tone from E so just think about playing from the 2nd fret on the E string upwards. That's how I learned to play an 8 string in... a day :)

    • @eightmetalstrings
      @eightmetalstrings Před 10 dny

      Thanks for your thoughts! I agree that those are great ways to start thinking about the strings and where the notes are. I think the level I am trying to achieve is the intuitive knowledge or where all the notes are and how they relate to other areas of the fretboard. On my six-string where I do have this intuition after 20 years, I can improvise and never have to think about notes - they all relate and have a solid, fixed position. On the 8-string however, it is not there yet, partially I think because I know the 6-string bass string so well that it messes me up now that is just a tone away. So while I can fairly quickly figure out notes in my head, the muscle memory is a lot harder to retrain, and I think this is the "wrench" that gets thrown in.

    Ok but why the ugly guitar?

  • @metalvisionsongcontest7055

    I’ve been using a Schecter Hellraiser C-8 FR for almost 7 years now, and as nice and tight as the low end is, I’ve found that the notes on the high E string tend to get shrieky, because of the higher string tension due to the extended scale length. Have you found ways to manage that? Obviously, I see you’re using a multiscale guitar here, so your high E string is probably under less tension than on non-multiscale 8-strings. The second influence I’ve found is the pickup type, of course: The Hellraisers have regular EMGs; the newer Schecter Hellraiser Hybrids seem to have slightly darker pickups, while still being active, so I’m thinking about trying one of those for comparison.

    • @eightmetalstrings
      @eightmetalstrings Před 13 dny

      Hmm, I'm not sure how to mitigate the shrieking sound on the high E. What gauge of string is the high string? Perhaps some of it can be affected by EQ'ing your tone in various ways. If you can get your hands on the pickups and try them out, I always suggest it! Super interesting to see the differences and discover your taste preferences.

    • @metalvisionsongcontest7055
      @metalvisionsongcontest7055 Před 12 dny

      @@eightmetalstrings Thanks for your reply! I’m already using a Heavy Bottom gauge, since the Hellraiser C-8 came stock with them, so the high E string is .009.

    • @eightmetalstrings
      @eightmetalstrings Před 12 dny

      @@metalvisionsongcontest7055 hm, that's what gauge I would have suggested trying. Without hearing the issue myself, I'm stumped on what else to suggest. If it is not related to any fret or saddle noise, and it can't be EQ'd out, I'm not sure what it is 🤔

    • @metalvisionsongcontest7055
      @metalvisionsongcontest7055 Před 12 dny

      @@eightmetalstrings Saddle noise is unlikely, since my 8-string has a locking nut (Floyd Rose). So unless it’s one of the saddles in the bridge - or one of the frets, with the string action being too low so that it buzzes against them - it might just be the result of the scale length combined with the pickups. I’ll have to try and test these various hypothesis, and if need be, take the guitar to the store for setup (even though I already did that once). Anyway, thanks for your input! 😉

    Guy who made the comment here, thanks! This is essentially exactly what I was looking for. Some good stuff to think about, and a recommendation if I want to dig deeper. I'm a largely """self taught""" player, insofar as that's true in the age of the internet, so I have an inconsistent level of knowledge in a lot of areas. The idea of actively paying attention to elbow position seems, in hindsight, obvious, but also pretty eye opening. I was aware of it doing what it did, but most of my awareness of "trying to minimize tension" was focused on wrist and finger position. Makes me think maybe I should bite the bullet and finally look into classical guitar. Been putting it off, because I'm actually a bassist who's always wanted to get a seven string bass, but there seems to be even less info on extended range basses than extended range guitars.

      @eightmetalstrings Před 14 dny

      Yes, thank you for your comment! I was happy to talk about this in a video for you. Super interesting stuff. I feel you though that everything is obvious in hindsight and it's unbelievable the years some of us spend hurting ourselves in our playing. If some classical is what you want to do, that's awesome! It won't necessarily teach good technique though. Just be aware that you'll have to be mindful of your body with whatever instrument you end up playing. Best of luck though if you do end up trying some classical!

      20 year club! Woot! lol. I always recommend going to a local guitar shop and trying some 8-strings out before you buy if you have that available to you. I know even L&McQ (the chain music store here in Canada even has some now). Look for all the things you would look for in a good 6-string. 2 extra strings is no excuse for shoddy build quality or corners being cut. Try it out on some good amps to test the pickups, check the frets, neck, electronics, etc. Beyond that, maybe some others can comment here about their experiences with other models. I haven't had the ability to really play more than my Abasi so don't have much to compare with as of yet. Good luck! I'm honoured to be an inspiration to pick up this instrument for you!

  • @ShallieDragon
    @ShallieDragon Před 14 dny

    I don't have an 8-string yet, but I was specifically considering a Strandberg, because of the ergonomic benefits. I had a chance to play a Strandberg 8-string, and compared to the others I had tried, it was lighter and more comfortable to fret (especially for me, as I have pretty small hands). And I think part of it was the neck. Not only did it encourage better thumb positioning, but it wasn't as thick. Instead of being a wide C shaped neck, it's a trapezoid, which has less material on the back of the neck, so that my hand didn't have to stretch as far to get around the neck. YMMV, but I found it interesting. Though it does seem like comfortable playing positions can be achieved with any 8-string, if you take the time to learn how to do them.

    • @eightmetalstrings
      @eightmetalstrings Před 14 dny

      I've always been interested in the Strandberg 8-strings as well! I think if I bought one now in my life, I would go for one of those before an Abasi because of the price difference and availability. The Abasi neck has some similar design considerations though as the neck gets flatter as you go higher. It's also a very thin neck as you mentioned about the Strandberg which, imo, requires less strain on the hand to keep the grips. So yes, you can definitely get good positioning on any guitar, but it sure helps when the guitar makers are trying to help you achieve that goal!

    One of my favorite tunings to use on both 7 and (hopefully in the future) 8 strings is to keep the guitar in standard but tune the G string down a half step to F#. Not only does this shift the tuning of your strings from E & e to B & b as well as giving you an entirely new tuning to play with from the 6th to the 1st string, but it also gives you two whole octaves for power chords on both the low and high strings on an 8 string, so you wind up gaining a sense of familiarity on the higher strings for clean playing.

    I really like TesseracT's tuning on 7-string (usually AEADEAD or a semitone higher on their earlier stuff) and I guess extended to 8 that would be something like EBEABEAB (the TesseracT original is just 7-string DADGAD)

    I've been watching for a few weeks, and man, I had no clue you were a relatively new / small channel. The quality of your instruction and production value are so high I assumed you must be an old hand. I was wondering if you've made / could make a video on fretting hand ergonomics for 8 string. The sense I get is that there are a lot more viably ergonomic ways to play 6 string because your fingers don't need to reach as far, and trying to transfer that 1:1 to 8 string is going to result in contorting your wrist.

      Hey! Thanks for the kind words! I'm always doing my best to make clear to understand content. As for the hand positioning, I can definitely do a video about that. My movement series I did when I first started in October touches a bit on it (in a non-direct way) if you want some guidance before I can get the video done. Thanks for leaving your thoughts!

      Hey! No problem. Happy to put this stuff out there. I haven't tried a DI box with my 8-string or active pickups but I don't expect it would be much different. My Abasi guitar has active pickups and works perfectly normally into my interface. I would just give it a shot and don't be afraid to experiment or rent some gear from a local shop to try stuff out.

    I have my 8 string tuned to Eb1 standard. It used to be in F Standard but after I got my 9 string and tuned down a half step I decided to go lower on my 8 to have C# Standard on strings 1 to 6.

    Best thumping tutorial I've seen. Thank you so much. If you don't also play some violin, you might enjoy giving it a try...you'll grasp the mechanics quicker than anyone because of your insights into how the body helps to make your sound. Thanks again brother -

    • @eightmetalstrings
      @eightmetalstrings Před měsícem

      It's very similar, yes! I would perhaps dial back the bass a little more and reduce the compression since the thump attack is so aggressive already. From there you will still have to dial in gain and mids to fit your guitar and desired tone. :)

      Can you achieve a thump/selective picking tone on any crunch setting as long as you use the split coil sound?

      @@mikerom7991 Not necessarily as there is more to it than just using the split coil. But it's worth experimenting.

    I want an 8 string that goes A E A D G B E A. I want that high A instead of a low F# because the F# competes with the kick drum and the bass in the mix, especially once something is in the 1 and 0 octaves. A high A is much more usable. The ear does not expect it and it surprises the listener to hear a note a 4th above high E. The problem is I also want this in a Floyd Rose bridge. I would need a multiscale Floyd Rose bridge with the high A shorter than 23.5". The Rusty Cooley signature Dean had a high A with a fixed bridge and it was 23.5". If a Floyd Rose can pull the high A to C/C# without breaking, the scale length would have to be short and the string gauge thin. The low F# string would stay at 25.5". Even then I am guessing the slant would be pretty extreme. The guitar keeps going lower, needlessly stepping on the bass which has a more pleasing timbre than an 8 string guitar and can do more independent voice leading in jazz and classical counterpoint than an 8 string guitarist's hand can do. Drone notes are not enough of a reason to invest in an 8 string when a bass or another guitar can do those too. Numerous guitars weaving in and out of each other with independent lines will always do more than a single 8 string guitarist can do. Putting more strings onto a guitar and tapping like many do in Tosin Abasi inspired videos does not make it a piano because you cannot hit every possible interval with the fretting hand like you can with two hands on a keyboard. The guitar needs to match the range of a grand piano (88 keys) by reaching into the 7th octave to add sweeter notes on top of sweep arpeggios, taps, and other flourishes that come with good technique. At the same time, the guitar needs to retain the ability to bend those extremely high notes sharp without breaking the string so that notes retain a more legato and vocal quality--like a pitch wheel on a synthesizer. Some have said adding on an extra octave to the fretboard would work (I have seen Michael Angelo Batio's old guitars do this), but it is not as convenient as being able to transition to another string a 4th higher. Additionally, with an extra fretboard octave scale length and tension would increase and the frets in the upper third octave would become very close together, requiring excellent technique. Edit: Why not a Digitech Whammy pedal to pitch shift up a 4th? Turning it on and off and sweeping the pedal to just the right place for just a few fast notes is awkward, and a digitally raised pitch sounds different than a physical string tuned to that pitch in the same way that two guitars playing in harmony sound different than a single guitar with a harmonizer effect.

    Fun tuning I started doing on my 7 string. Our band plays in c# standard but I love my baritone 7 string. So I tuned it C# c# f# B E g# c# Allows for a digitech drop pedal effect but more natural sounding. Or even an octave pedal sound. When you wanna drop something stupid low but don't want a million pedals in front or in the loop just clamping down on what your guitar should sound like
