Today we’re checking out the positions and modes of the Melodic Minor Scale on the 8-string guitar. Depending on how you like to learn, these visualizations can be extremely useful for learning the fretboard.
The video goes over the basics of the diagrams I have put together as well as one of my favourite scale exercises I’ve encountered, so far.

Thanks! And very interesting, I will see if I can put something together about that. I never really learned using CAGED as a framework but I know many do. It's on the list!

Being fairly new to the 8-string I am really glad you are doing these videos! There is not much instruction out there on specifically the 8-string guitar so this stuff is great!

Thanks! That's exactly the reason I'm making these, haha. So, good to hear I'm reaching some people who want them.

Love these videos, can you do a video on 8 string specific chord shapes? Triads and 7th chords maybe?

Hey man, seeking some advice. I’ve been looking into getting an 8 string as my first guitar. I know that sounds absurd but I’ll explain my thought process behind it, “sorta”. I have a love for a particular type of music that lends itself to 8 sting guitars, if you can guess what genre what is (metal) lol. It may sound somewhat ignorant or maybe close minded, but it’s really the only music style I’m interested in playing. I’m a percussionist/drummer by trade and like playing a diverse range of music on that instrument, but for guitar I’d like to focus on one genre. I have a goal of starting a project playing and tracking drums and getting to the point where I can confidently lay down a decent heavy riff without having to out source it. I know there are a lot of factors that go into heaviness not just playing a low tuning and chugging, but an 8 string is the sound I’m wanting to get. So the real question is do you recommend jumping into an 8 string knowing it’s going to be more challenging (but ultimately is the main goal anyways), or having built up experience with a 6 string, and then transition to an 8? This is pretty long winded but thought I’d ask a talented 8 string player such as yourself. TIA.

Hey! I appreciate you reaching out with your question (and the kind words). It is an interesting question I have been pondering for some time now (since I cannot go back and re-start learning the guitar from an 8-string). I absolutely believe it's doable though, especially if you already have some musical understanding. One of my goals in putting all this material out there is to have future guitarists be able to start on an 8-string and then completely shred it better than any of us 6-string natives.
So my answer basically is yes! go for it. Especially if your goal is just to do metal stuff, you can hone in on the techniques you need to practice fairly quickly. If you do make the leap, definitely keep me posted on your journey with it and if there are any topics you'd like help with.
