THE POET, a Short Story by Somerset Maugham
In "The Poet" by Somerset Maugham, the narrator, initially disinterested in meeting famous people, declines an introduction to the renowned poet Calisto de Santa Aña. However, upon visiting Ecija, he receives an unexpected invitation from the poet himself. Arriving at what he believes to be Santa Aña's home, the narrator is struck by the noble yet impoverished surroundings, which seem fitting for a romantic figure like the poet. When an imposing, dignified old man approaches, the narrator reverently greets him.... and then there is a twist ending I won't reveal here.

❤
Somerset Maugham wrote truly remarkable, thoughtful stories!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm left speechless
Very amusing!
❤
Charming
Thank you for these helping me through some crazy days nights
Is this an AI channel?
Not his best. Vague. No empathy generated.
This story reveals why Maughan was considered a mediocre writer. He couldn't imagine the real beauty and pleasure found in a dutiful life. Sommerset Maughan seen only one side of the coin, but he was brilliantly witty and insightful at times.
Thank you. This is absolutely horrifically consuming. Truly human inhumanity.
My heart was in my mouth until you read that he got home safely😂
Excellent!!! Thank you
A sad tale. Humans are so complicated.
What a put down for women .
No more Maugham, all these idiots unlife themselves.
I cannot get the last words out of my head, this is so emotional

Many thanks for putting this up. A great short story from the master storyteller.
Most of you aren't old drunks, makes sense to me
🎉😊
An excellent story that exhibits a great deal of the attitudes of colonialism and xenophobia of its time. It also paints a (deservedly, to my mind) bleak picture of missionaries that remains a valid critique of that nightmarish enterprise.
Hv never heard a story where I listen to every word so intently n told so well. Waiting for the nx one.
I am taken with the Excellent illustrations. Can you tell us more about them? Thank you.
For the past year and a half I have trained using the latest tools in midjourney and other systems to create images that correlate with the themes of the stories. I did this originally for my students with visual problems so they could have access to audiobooks that were free and I then augmented them with visual images for other students as well....
Thank you.
A wonderful moving story of a man who came to greatness in a mundane way.
Most enjoyable.
Rather meh ending
WHAT?! It ended? I thought the narrator just needed to turn the page! LOL
This spoke right to my heart
Subtle yet obvious...jus brilliant....❤
Good story. I was hoping Miss Thompson would kill him though. A gal had to do what she had to do in a tough male dominated world. From the p.o.v. of an indigenous person I've got to say, "Missionaries, am I right"?
Maugham's writing is so euphonic and the narration so good that listening to this story was as effortless as strolling downhilll. I feel empathy for the father. His advice was sound. Nicki was lucky all around, and luck is a fickle thing. He'll have to learn that the hard way.
Thank you. Wonderful play.🇮🇪🙏❤️🥳✝️
What an amazing, lively story! Thanks for sharing!
To few is given "the dark night of the soul", the ultimate test of faith. Powerful.

I didn’t understand the ending.
oh dear
Lord, what a story!
😄💬 " And that is the rest of the story" > (Paul Harvey) 🤠 Yup❕ G~G. 🗳☑🇺🇸.
Yes, things are not clearly spelled out, are they? I will listen to it again. But I was reminded of something Alice Munro, another master short story writer, said in an interview. She said that her goal is simply to look very, very well at what is. Perhaps that's a way to look at this story: the cultured, gentle character of the Count; his encounter with some human evil in the midst of a refined event; the effect that has on him, and on the narrator. It makes me think of the mysterious strangeness of the world, and what a challenge it is to be at ease in it. But I will listen again . . .

No sound..........😢

No music. Great

It is simply beautiful.
Listening to this with Apocalypse Now running through my head Brilliant
Thank you very much for your work!
The question I have is, “What is the idea?” Is it the Horror which he might despair of separating from the human heart?
How in the world could Achebe ignore this part of the novel in his criticism of the book?
