Checking for wear on a Myford Lathe (ML7) + Essential Upgrades

In addition to the things mentioned in the video you may also want to consider: 1. Condition of the electrics 2. Condition of the motor (i.e. noise) 3. Backlash and condition of topslide/compound slide screws. My #Myford #ML7 #lathe condition was a complete unknown and I thought time to establish what wear and play there was. The Maid of Kent 5" #Steam #Loco build is still running, just waiting...

This is a cheap deburring tool from Chronos or RDG - the tips are excellent but the body of it is horrible cheap plastic and the method for 'locking' the double ended shank in place is with very thin plastic. Let's change that...

HELP to wash something and drill some holes... - Steam Loco Interlude
I;ve gone for a Drummond lathe which Myford took over for war production around 1940 & called it the ML4 it is smaller & lighter than the ML7 which is a bonus as I can [with some parts removed] pick it up & move it on my own, it will do all I need of it & when I built a 5" simplex I made tools jigs as I went as special parts tooling were not available, I did have a Raglan Little John at first I never needed the larger capacity & it took 3 men [again parts removed ] to move it
Like your videos,I did not know that you can use a lathe as a mill. I will not too technical work with my lathe.
Sounds dry, use steam oil
Hello William, I like your lathe, one can manufacture lots of parts on it, all the complaints you mentioned shouldn't have been raised, I own a Hercus 9-inch lathe with tapered roller bearings, I purchased it brand new in 1973 and I still have it as of august 2024. now a days one can buy third party accessories on eBay for hobby lathes at reasonable prices for example taper turning attachment that mounts in the tail stock, plus a ball turning attachment, there are many other attachments. As a note a good machinist never blames his tools.😃
Опять наебали. А все лежал ждал когда это говно само поедет. 🤮🤮🤮
This is a very good introduction to the topic. Now, if you could see your way clear to making a video on how to make a Myford collet that would be doing humanity a service and would provide yourself with an additional collet - which I am sure you need.
😡🤷
Where can I buy one?😅
A Don Young 'Elaine' I think.
Thank you - I moved this one on, but as expected I regret it now :)
😒
When you get it done if you ever do that's a good-looking engine
Great video. I really like the oilers. I have all the upgrades you mentioned except for the tool post. I've had my 1952 ML7 for 17 years and have used the original "boat type" and four-way tool post for many years. I fabricated a QCTP from scratch, about 3 years ago, using plans from the internet. I would never go back to the four-way post, but we all have our own opinions.
Cool! A finger powered steam engine!
Someone needs to read up on definition of words....
Try putting steam into it ,it doesnt work 😮
10 volt steam engine?
That sounds dry!
Please give it oil
How exciting, an unfinished model steam engine 🙄
I literally have the completed engine running in another short bro
Very good info. Thanks for sharing.
E eu aqui esperando o motor funcionar
да он до сих пор крутит...
One thing is u gotta have steam going to it i dont see that
Might b turning it in the wrong direction
I'm getting into 2mm finescale because I don't love the performance of N-gauge streamline points and trackwork. Hoping the smaller gaps will make a difference!
They absolutely do, but in my experience the best way is with PCB sleepers and rail rather than plastic or hybrid kits. Good luck! Check out RMweb’s 2mm sub forum
@@williamsworkshopuk oh, good shout, I'd just started an order for a bunch of 2mm Scale Association Easitrac sleepers and Finetrax point kits... was hoping that would be straightforward and reliable! might need to look into learning how to use the various jigs then 😄
they’re all good and lots of people have success with them but if you have trouble then know there are other options! ❤
yeah, tbh there's a lot of value in momentum - I have in mind to make a 2mm Inglenook on the opposite corner of a 120x20mm reclaimed baseboard to my existing N-gauge Inglenook. Just need eight wagons, a loco, and reliable couplings and points - but generally a low-stakes experimentation project!
Good video
No Go ,?!??😢
Hi William, I do hope you didnt move the table 1 1/4" I think the drawing says 1 1/8" i did that and made the throw too big. enjoying your vids, they are inspiring me to get my finger out and finish fitting new boiler to my current maid. Then get on with another I stripped to paint so long ago, I am going have fun finding all the nuts and bolts
just found your channel and even though I have a running Maid I also have a couple of part built ones that i need to get on and finish, so finding your channel a little inspiring. Nigel
Question ... WTF do you have one then ..?
Valve gear might help, together with a little steam.
Nice paper weight.
Presumably you are not sponsered by myford😕
RUBBISH
hello william.. i am in the process of converting a centec2 to a 2a ie belt drive to gearbox drive its simple enough but i am baffled by the high and low racios how are they connected ? any ideas? regards laurence
I'm afraid i hacen't the foggiest - I have a 2B!
Congrats 😍
It needs lubrication.

Glad to hear all is O/k with you and the Expanding Family, congratulations, Enjoy
Congratulations. I am very pleased everything is good
Thank you very much matey!
Congratulations
Thanks chum!
Didn’t play with dolls as a child, but having a newborn felt like I was playing with one. I was told newborns are chick magnets. Only true if your trying to attract old widows or girls half the age of consent Hopefully both yours are healthy
Number 1 is amazing, Number 2 is healthy so far - it's amazing.
Hi William Glad to hear you and the family are well. I look forward to your ‘return’ in due course. 👏👏👍😀
Thank you so much - I'm slowly building up video content in the background.
Congratulations to the new family members!
Thank you! It's amazing!
Ah, a second child. That's fantastic news.
Thank you MIchel - I'm overjoyed. While it doesn't bode well for workshop time, I wouldn't argue :)
Best wishes to you and your growing family.
Thank you so much!
Good to see you back
Thank you mate, not sure how much I'll be on here but slowly building up content in the backgrounsd
Seems like the arbour is turning the wrong direction so it’s undoing the nut. Maybe reverse it? But then you are climb cutting, so maybe come at the workpiece from the other direction?
Yeah - really the problem is that I hadn't used a drawbar on the arbor, so it was able to extend out and brush the inside face of the overarm support bearing.
@@williamsworkshopuk That makes sense. I am debating adding a key way to my C2a arbor… it just seems like it has way more power than it is able to unleash. Some have suggested the lack of keyway is a kind of safety feature, but I want to try some slab cutting and I am just not sure that nut will do the job.
Can’t wait to see it runing, I just found your channel and it’s amazing
Welcome aboard!
