I don’t see anything wrong with the question. Tom Cruise is an outspoken Scientologist. PTA had just made a film that completely shreds L. Ron Hubbard, and Scientology. If Tom Cruise had watched it, it would be very interesting to learn about his reaction to it.

I am a viewer and still don’t know the answer

2024 and I still come back here, takes me back to grades 5-7 every time I watch it. We’d play Whip*ss in the school yard, go home and play NHL Slapshot, and find some time to grind the math homework. Then, we’d watch the Leafs. Hadn’t made the playoffs in a decade and the future didn’t always look so good (may have believed otherwise 12 years ago), but that didn’t stop Phil from lighting up the scoresheet every night. The kids these days may talk about the days of Matthews Marner et al. when they grow old, but for me, it’s Phil!

I don't think the interviewer did anything wrong but I think PTA was irritated that everyone just wanted to label his movie as a scientology movie when the movie clearly meant a lot to him personally and he probably didn't have an agenda with it, because he's definitely not an agenda-driven filmmaker. Also Hoffman's character wasn't L Ron Hubbard but rather inspired in some ways by him, that's a big difference. Also for all we know this is the 100th person who's asked him this question so he might've been burnt out at this point.

She was digging for dirt. Not journalism, not intelligent film critique: just gossip. It’s the bullshit shallow way she approached it that he didn’t like. Had she been more honest and respectful he would’ve responded differently.

Maybe Paul wanted Tom Cruise to play this character way more than Hoffman but Tom declined thinking it will get misinterpreted as for Tom has a very deep passionate respect for Scientology he wants to leave that out of his films he makes, he's an action star
