Dragon Harald Fairhair. The construction of a Viking Dragon Ship
zhlédnutí 375KPřed 12 lety
Dragon ships were large longships that had carved heads of dragons and other magical beings mounted on their bow. This video shows some glances from the construction of such a ship: Dragon Harald Fairhair. We are using the best of the old Norwegian clinker-building tradition and combining this with knowledge obtained from archaeological material, Norse literature etc. Our aim is to recreate a s...
Dragon Harald Fairhair - A glimpse from the shipyard
zhlédnutí 58KPřed 12 lety
Dragon Harald Fairhair is the largest Viking ship built in modern times. The Dragon is coming together in Western Norway. Since we rarely allow visitors inside the shipyard, we now invite you to get a glimpse of what is going on during construction. A normal working day in May 2011....
Dragon Harald Fairhair is looking for crew
zhlédnutí 10KPřed 13 lety
Dragon Harald Fairhair is a large Viking ship that is under construction in Norway. When finished, the Dragon will bring the seafaring qualities of a warship from the old Norse sagas to life. It will be a ship that combines ocean-crossing sailing capabilities with a warship's use of oars. Those who want to sail with the Dragon needs to qualify by going through training or they must be able to p...
DRAGON HARALD FAIRHAIR'S TEST BOATS. TOWING AND HEELING TESTS
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 14 lety
Dragon Harald Fairhair is being built in Western Norway. Before we started the construction of the large Viking ship, we built three small test boats. We did towing tests, heeling tests and rowing tests to compare the different characteristics of the hulls of the tree boats.
SAILING THE TEST BOATS FOR THE DRAGON HARALD FAIRHAIR
zhlédnutí 241KPřed 14 lety
Dragon Harald Fairhair is being built in Western Norway. It will be the largest Viking ship built in modern times. We have built three 8 m long test boats which have different variations of the hull that the large Viking ship will end up with. Small variations in the shape of the hull can mean very much for how the ship will manage in the sea. For the crew this can mean the difference between l...
The ancient ancestors would be proud of this re creation long ship build and I suspect Odin Thor Frey freyja would be too , hail the gods , it just goes to show the hard work and skill needed to create a large fleet of these ships to sail to new lands , and for one to go down in a storm must of been heartbreaking for the builders when you see the work carried out to build just one .
Paráda!!!😊 Koľko ton váži???
That crap was not music.
Congratulations and fair winds.
Que maravilla, velero de madera y agua, la conjunción mas hermosa. Quien los construye, donde se puede comprar uno?
I am surprised the planks were steamed and then bent into place.
What is the name of the song here?
Yup
Id love if these people would host entire workshops on how to build these longships i gladly build these if I had the chance and im american
That was long and wide! wider than Greek Olympias.
information about the music would be nice too
I've read accounts of masts being lowered when the longships went inland because of trees hanging over some portions of river. How the hell would they do that with such a ship as the Dragon Harald?
Wow that’s great
whre is the dragons head?
No women rowing? What happened to the equality of the Nordic states?
Must have🤤
Слабы мужчины стали для такого паруса !
Когда то их предки владели половиной мира ! А сейчас у них гендерное равенство ! РАГНАР как пропеллер там крутится !
As a once wooden boat owner I am fascinated by the worlds different ethnic peoples on how they crafted their ships so many years ago and even today. Many similarities between various ethnic groups. Amazing engineering and skill that is necessary to build these magnificent ships! I'm honored to see this!
Have they got a bilge pump ready! All new timber clinker boats leak till boards swell!
"Today, we drink Lindisfarne mead from curved horns!" That it was brewed by St Aiden's Winery on Lindisfarne sent a shiver up my spine! Very symbolic!
Is it based on a original ship ? Like the Seastallion Of Glendalough (Roskilde, Skuldelev 2). Just asking, because the danish ship, similar in size is based on one of those they found in Roskilde Fjord.
Pompous collective egomania.
How wonderful the tribute to Lindisfarne, the holy island across the sea to the Celtic lands and the chapels upon that sacred shore.
This is from a time when Men were Men,and Women were Double Breasted.
0:57 I can see how the old viking helmet have developed considerably...
Cue “The Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin. Should mount a load speaker system below decks to be fully accurate. “Ah-ah-Ah! We come from the land of the ice and snow…”
Time to go....Viking!
next time you build one my ex mother in law would like to volunteer to be sacrificed to bring luck to the ship .
How are the decks treated? Are they oiled with perhaps linseed oil or some other method?
сами доказали что не было судов
Oh, no! I must see the draggon head replaced.
👍👌👏
We killed everybody because our swords were fine. At that time everybody were killing every of all... What kind of pride hade you? Long Hair?
Where's the rest?! Have you posted the finished boat elsewhere? Where's the rest of the story?! This is magnificent.
Incredible.
Excellent stuff bro
That hull is perfection.
I wonder how many were launched in the late 700’s that sank ???!!!
It would have been really cool to see how many of the spectators could fit on the boat.. I bet you can squeeze 500 people on it. 😊
What did the Vikings use for clamps?
While I can’t tell you how to build the boat the song is sjørøvaren frå ådland by rett vest
Where can a person get plans to these boats?
Hello from Australia would love the plans for one of beautiful boats
Awesome. Well equipped boats.
Are these gislinge ships?
Why have some stringers been fastened with wooden nails and others with iron nails/rivets? As it looks, there is more load on the parts with wooden nails, possible?
