Only thing I’d have liked is to see the process of putting it in jars at the end - but that’s just because it’s my favourite part, and I love seeing the colour of the jam at the end…! Thank you :)

    As a mulch I left my Xmas tree outside on a large plastic sheet and collected up the dead pine needles over a couple of weeks. I spread them over the soil round the bushes ( in a raised bed of ericaceous compost). It took a couple of years before they disappeared but it seemed to help.

    I just wanted to say Claire that I have learnt so much from you since I took my allotment on in 2009. I must’ve watched all of your videos several times over. Months by month, I watched your early videos for how to sow each type of vegetable. Your natural style is so engaging and step-by-step instructions taught me so much. So 15 years on I can still remember watching you showing French beans indoors whilst your washing machine was vibrating, because it was so wet outside thank you for everything I still refer your CZcams links to new gardeners on my allotment. I hope you get this message as I know you haven’t posted any videos for sometime

    Hello Claire, Thanks for your enlightening video. I have grown (attempted) to grow brassicas for my allotment, from seed for years. I keep making a big mistake along the line but I cannot see what it is. The seeds all germinate well, and soon form healthy seed leaves. This year in a Agralan root trainer. They looked great but within a few days the first true leaves were growing. Then, as usual, the baby plants slowly begin to wilt, stop growing and eventually die. I'm sure it's not damping off disease as the plants remain upright. Sometimes a few recover but never make very good plants. I'm doing something very wrong. I find it hard to judge bottom watering, even a little seems to have saturated the roots when I do a post mortem. Other gardeners I know never have a problem and can't see what I'm getting so wrong. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Good luck this year Jeff

      You're going to have to dig it out with a large fork which will help loosen the deep roots. Get as much of it out as you can before it sets seed. If you are relentless with it then it's very easy to get rid of.

I'm always finding new ways to try and keep them out of the garden, but the little buggers always find a way. Bunnies are a problem too, but a fence, like you have done will work very well. It's been a funny old year. I've been so busy with work and putting in extra hours and then the weekends have been crammed full with one thing and another. I've managed to get loads done in the garden but have had to snatch and hour here and there. It's been a good year for tomatoes, carrots, onions, berries and especially grapes. The courgettes didn't do anything at all so they were a lost cause. the brassicas are now happy as it's cooler. We started the season really warm and then it got cold and wet. We then had a heatwave and then more rain. September was beautiful and so was October for the most part with above average temperatures. We've just had a bad storm come across with very strong winds and now the weather is very wet so that's fun for working out in. But still we take each day as it goes and see what we can do. Putting the garden away for the winter now, still have lots of brassicas, leeks, celeriac, carrots and parsnips still in. Take care xx

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment Před 11 měsíci

      I said that the likelihood of getting blight if you're growing tomatoes in a greenhouse is small. If you're growing them outside then it can be a major problem. Blight like humid and moist weather and occurs when the water falls on the leaves and stems. If you are growing your tomatoes in a greenhouse then fresh compost each year and water from the bottom and try to avoid getting any water on your leaves. If you're growing them outside then make sure you grow your tomatoes in a different place each year. Hope this helps xx

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment Před 11 měsíci

      @@warreng675 Ok so try the following. At the end of the season give your greenhouse a thorough clean out. Get rid of any debris and rubbish. Sweep and wash the floors and wash any staging you have as well as the inside and outside of the greenhouse. Use hot water with some disinfectant in. Leave to dry naturally. If you're growing your tomatoes in pots then the blight virus may well stay on those pots, so either throw them away and get new ones or give them all a good wash in hot disinfectant water. Do the same with the bamboo canes you use. If you're growing your tomatoes in a section of soil in the greenhouse, then don't use it for a year and the virus should die out. Just think of blight as a virus that will spread easily and you have to keep everything super clean to kill it. During the winter leave the greenhouse door open so fresh air can come in, especially cold air as this will kill the virus. Use fresh compost each year. You may have unknowingly put a diseased tomato or potato plant on a compost heap and then used that compost the following year for your tomatoes. Just remember the compost heap is warm and the virus will love that. Hope this helps xxx

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment Před rokem

      I've mentioned in previous videos, but the reason being is because newly sown seeds need clean water (tap) because there are very few germs in it. Rain water could have been sitting about in a butt for weeks, even months and there are lots of germs in that would harm the seeds. Think of your seeds like little babies, we have to protect them when they're very young and as they grow and get bigger they can cope with more. Hope this helps.
