Parramatta Metro Station Community Open Day - Inside the Station Box and Archaeological Findings
On 21 April 2024, the Parramatta Metro Station construction site opened its doors to the public.
And in this video, you'll see the station box being excavated. It's currently 15 metres deep, and we were able to go right down into this station box, and see the excavation work happening up close.
Dan Powrie, Project Director for Sydney Metro West was my guide, an being a Civil Engineer, we got to really geek out on the construction of this station.
The Diaphragm wall that surrounds the station box is now complete, along with a number of temporary steel beams to keep these walls in place.
Dan reveals where the two station entrances will be. We also talk about how the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are progressing.
I ask Dan a few questions about Sydney Metro West including the electrification system that will be used, train headways, and train lengths.
And then I talk to Dr Amanda Dusting, about the Archaeological finds, and show you some of the artefacts that were recently discovered.

Accuracy
I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge and insight to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. Also note that for older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

A lot of people protested all this but to me it is a much improved service with the tram only a few meters from the train, the tram is very regular and gets you closer to the beach also having the bus station right there.

Just found your video, brought back many memories of the late '60s and early '70s. Worked freight trains from Port Kembla North to Moss Vale, Medway Quarry and Goulburn as a guard. I remember doing safe working duties at Summit Tank signal box when the line was Electric staff, detaching and dispatching bank engines from both front (840 ton loads, train #s 821, 829 and 835 for Goulburn destination ) and rear (1200 ton loads of steel, #s 801,803 and 807) for Dynon destinations. All long before the current platform, behind which many years ago was the turn table for the steam locos, mainly 50 class I believe. I remember it could be a cold, damp and miserable place on a winter's foggy night.

As I’m seeing updates of the stations while I’m heading to work or around the Brisbane CBD City, I see exciting news from the Cross River Rail website and new stations (Channels 7, 9, Ten, and ABC News). 1. The upgrade works in the Roma Street station subway is nearly completed with the finishing works. 2. The lifts, escalators, platform-screen doors, stairs, block works, building frames, the canopy roofs, and timetable screens are all being installed into place. 3. The new Exhibition station is nearly finished with the canopy roofs installed, the stairs, the new side track bridge, and fit-out electric wires are going into place. 4. Albert Street station is about to head to ground level around July and August while the lifts and escalators are both in place. 5. The Southern Portal from Boggo Road is about to be nearly finished with fit-out electric wires and lights installed. 6. Dutton Park station is taking shape with the overpass walkway installed from December 2023 and the lifts are in place. As 2024 is flying before the world heads towards 2025, I can’t wait for more updates and The Cross River Rail going to put the trains for testing like the Brisbane Metro buses.
