2012 Launch of Kittiwake at QCYC
The movies shows the launch of Kittiwake at 37' Hunter Legend sailboat from the yard of QCYC in 2012. The marine railway was originally constructed on Algonquin Island (then Sunfish) in 1921 using donated rails and equipment from RCYC. The railway was oriented in an West/East direction. It was rebuilt abut a decade later in a North/South direction to provide more protection to the boats on haul-out and launch. The boats are stored in the winter on cradles made of wood or metal. The cradles are hauled using ropes and hot lard for lubrication onto a marine railway car and secured to the car. The cradle with the boat then travels down the railway into the lagoon and launched. In the fall the reverse is performed to haul the boats out. The railway went through a major rebuild in 2005. The Yard can hold between 90 and 110 boats. A boat can be launch or hauled every 15 minutes on average.

Moving sand from the pile dredged up to deepen the moorings near the Algonquin bridge. That's why there is a mound at the end of Blue Section in that grove of trees. Note the first picture taken by Ron Mazza of the area on the north side of the lagoon just to the East of the Algonquin Island bridge. The area is perfectly flat. The sand was used to fill in the area in front of the dinghy shed to...

The clips show the use of med moorings in the lagoon between Ward's and Algonquin Islands and access to boat via boarding platforms. I do not know who shot the film and the 1950s is an estimate based on observations on what was shot.

I wonder if that was the ill-fated Noronic that burned in 1949?

If you put the video at 1.5 speed, I think thats the orginal speed it should be viewed at, normal is a bit slowed down.

Thanks for this! My father built KC 9, KC 99 and KC426 and I briefly owned a B14 which I believe belonged to Mazza at some point..So pretty cool to watch, not sure how the YT algorithm came up with this, very interesting for me though, please post more if there is any.

Interesting, talk about a "boom town" compare that with Toronto's skyline, today.
