    hey, just found your channel. as someone who works at a needlepoint store and teaches people how to use different stitches, you did a great job in explaining the different canvases and assorted tools. i just want to say that in stitching a tent stitch, the preferred method is basketweave. it hardly distorts the canvas and it’s much easier to block. we also recommend using a frame. it does keep the canvas much tauter which allows the stitches to lay flat. i would love to help you and give any advise you might need. looking forward to seeing what your project is. happy stitching!

    • @retrocraftdreams
      @retrocraftdreams Před 28 dny

      Thank you! Yes, I think I did mention that basketweave is preferred, but I probably glossed over it. Truth be told, I haven't done it yet! But so far, the only times I've done large areas in tent have been on plastic canvas, so I haven't worried about it yet. I do prefer to use a frame, but I know plenty of people don't use them, and my main goal is to make needlepoint as accessible as possible.

    • @retrocraftdreams
      @retrocraftdreams Před 2 měsíci

      Some vintage fibers may not be colorfast, so unless there are explicit washing instructions included in the kit telling you to do so (and you KNOW that the fibers are original to it), I would not submerge or soak any vintage pieces. In fact, even in cases where I know the fibers are safe to submerge, I still wouldn't likely bother unless it seriously needs a wash or is very out of square. And even then, steaming or spot cleaning may be sufficient. So, no. I would not soak it. Frame it up!

    This was a great intro to Needlepoint. Very clear, concise and entertaining. I’d like to see a visual comparison with tapestry, as the difference is still a bit confusing to me. I’m looking forward to learning more!

    • @retrocraftdreams
      @retrocraftdreams Před 3 měsíci

      I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I haven't tackled weaving of any kind yet, let alone tapestry, so I didn't have any examples. I know I saw a video on the subject here on youtube a few years ago by someone who does tapestry. But, I'll do my best to describe the difference. A primary distinction is that needlepoint must be stitch INTO something - the canvas, a.k.a. a ground fabric. True tapestry has no ground fabric, it IS the fabric, woven on a loom from bottom to top, the design itself made from the alternating warp and weft threads of the weaving (as far as I understand it). If I was trying to identify an antique, for example, I would look for a ground fabric. I would also look at the direction of the threads. Needlepoint usually has diagonal stitches, tapestry threads will be horizontal and vertical. I hope that helps!

      You can never have too many fiber crafts! Especially when they play nice with others! I use a lot of the same supplies for needlepoint as cross stitch and embroidery, and I also sometimes raid my yarn stash for needlepoint. Variety is also great for avoiding repetitive use injury.

    Very pretty. This is on my list to try this year. I have done fillet crochet for about 50 years now and create many of my own designs ( one of my favorite being a grizzly bear in mid steam of a water fall catching fish with trees and brush along the edges of the stream) , but I have never attempted the actual netting to make a grid or weaving to create the filled in squares. It’s such a different look and so beautiful. I have just recently started doing some Tenerife lace which uses the weaving also. Thank you for showing this beautiful rendition of an ancient lacework. 🥰

  • @jasmosteele
    @jasmosteele Před 4 měsíci

    I really appreciate your videos no matter what the content is, and the length is just right(I could listen to you talk pretty much all day). You are very articulate when speaking and explaining your projects. Your vibe is great! When having a chatty video like this it helps to break up your portrait time with B roll of your projects and materials, like you did this time, but maybe add a tiny bit more? I would love to see an example of a granny square/hexi cardigan, even if it's not your own, to help me visualize what you want to work on or have been working on. If you aren't opposed to voice overs you could film during the noisy times, mute the sounds, add some music and/or a voice over. I know, a *ton* of work, but another option if you'd like. I enjoy real time talking the most, but it just may not be an option all the time. I've also found that when people film they can hear the extra noises but the audience(or maybe just me?) can't at all or it isn't very noticeable. Kitties munching in the background wouldn't be the end of the world unless you're really striving for TV series quality of videos, which is a ton of pressure and not completely necessary for CZcams. You're already doing the job of several people(very well I might add) just by setting up your frame, making sure lighting/audio is good, filming, editing, etc., not to mention doing the thing(s) you're already filming. I hope you'll keep things as simple/stress free as possible for yourself so making videos keeps being something you enjoy doing. P.S. Bloopers are an awesome resource to keep videos more lighthearted.

      Thank you so much! My cat is the loudest, messiest eater. I can hear him crunch a room away, and my main microphone does pick it up. If he eats during one of these, I'll probably leave it, but during my regular intros and other stuff - oof! He's very distracting. I'll definitely have more B-roll when there's more to see. I wasn't too worried about it here, because I knew things would be shown in more detail in follow up videos. I try to include the things I know I like in others' videos, and I do favor ones with good closeups. VOs do also require a quiet house, and writing them is not my strong suit. Fortunately, a lot of my projects work well with music montages, and I love doing those. But sometimes, a project needs to be talked through - which yes, definitely works best when I am in the moment. Otherwise, I might even forget! My earlier videos all had bloopers! But I kinda stopped doing that. Not really a conscious decision, though I did wonder if the added length made my videos less appealing. But now I leave more of those things in the main body of the video, anyway.

    I love your videos. You are really good at talking to us about your projects. This approach sounds very interesting. I am probably about 20 years older than you and your retro crafts have blessed my heart! Thanks so much for the inspiration.

    I enjoy the chatty project update videos. Happy to have more of them. Seeing and hearing your progress or struggles is comforting to know others wrestle with problems sometimes and celebrate the successes.
