Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR - REVIEW
In this review of the Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR I dive deep in all the qualities of this so called kit lens.
This kit lens comes sometimes in a bundle with the Z30, Z50 or Zfc cameras.
But don't be fooled, this is so much more than a simple kit lens.

    Can you compare it to the 18-140mm, please? I wonder why those lenses are kit lenses, but it seems that those kits are much better than the main kit 16-50mm. I mean A LOT. I haven't got the 18-140mm z, but had the f-mount version. This 50-250mm is way better than that f-mount version. One downside of these kit lenses is the low aperture. Other than that, this lens is highly recommended!

    I have 3 pro DSLRs the D700, D810 and D500. They were great when I bought them and nothing has changed. I have a Sony A7iii which I use for video, which I am likely to sell in the foreseeable future. It is better for video, no question about that, particularly video autofocus and the video format options, but it isn't better for stills, at least not in terms of picture quality. The d500 is also superior in autofocus in tricky lighting for stills. People rave about the Sony autofocus, but put it in tricky lighting and it hunts and gets confused. Outside of maybe the latest Fuji flagship cameras and maybe the canon r7, I still don't think there is a better APS-C option than the D500. Which in today's money is less than half the price. There are always rumours of a z90 lurking but it will be very expensive. I mostly shoot Product and Macro; with some headshots and models. But my hobbies also include nature/wildlife/landscape and Astro. And my DSLRs do an excellent job for both paid work and hobbies. I'd sooner be buying more speedlights/flashes, softboxes and studio equipment than switching everything to mirrorless. I have an extensive array of f-mount lenses covering 60 years of lens development, really got no intention of trading it in for a new system, even for a tax write off.

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals Před 12 dny

      I have a z30 and z50 too. The benefits of the z-cameras is that you can use z-glass. I would choose a z-camera.

    • @Alsayid
      @Alsayid Před 11 dny

      @@WimBals So, the Z glass really is better/sharper than the DX lenses? One reason I am looking at a Z camera is to be able to use my three DX lenses, one of which is a fairly sharp 35mm prime. But, the DX lenses are noticeably better than this? This leaves me pondering. The cost of replacing that glass is still a consideration, though.

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals Před 11 dny

      I also used my 'old' f-mount glass with an FTZ adapter. The problem is that with this extra adapter extra length is added to the lens and is therefore no longer in balance with the light z-bodies. The newly developed lenses are significantly improved in terms of chromatic and longitudinal aberration, distortion, colors and sharpness. I am currently working on making a video about the 24mm f/1.7 DX z-lens. A fantastic light and cheap lens that easily beat the 35mm f/1.8 FX on a full frame (D610). I also have a review on my channel of the 50-250mm lens. In addition to Nikon glass there are also other manufacturers that release new lenses for Z cameras such as viltrox and Sigma.

    @KibaSnowpaw Před 14 dny

    As a photographer using the Nikon D5100 and D3300, I have been considering upgrading to either the D7200 or the D7500, given their comparable prices in my region. After much deliberation, I am leaning towards the D7500, primarily because I find mirrorless cameras less appealing. Mirrorless cameras often suffer from lag and slower response times, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the AI-driven features in many modern mirrorless cameras can sometimes feel like they take control away from the photographer, causing further delays due to rendering times. In contrast, DSLRs like the D7500 offer more immediate feedback and greater reliability in various shooting conditions. Even smartphones, despite their advanced software, cannot match the quality of a DSLR's objective lens, which is crucial for capturing high-quality images. In summary, while mirrorless cameras are advancing, they still have a way to go in terms of performance and user control. The Nikon D7500 stands out as a robust and reliable choice for photographers who value quick response times and traditional DSLR advantages. This review by Wim Bals provides a thorough exploration of the D7500's features, helping photographers make an informed decision about their next camera purchase.

    Thank you for sharing your technique. As I have a shop and cut and prep all the panels for my spouse, I have a few questions if you are willing to answer. Thank you in advance. I’ve watched maybe 30 videos now on panel preference and preparation. There seems to be a prefered material for both oil and acrylic, namely hardboard panels. For archival quality, most artists stay away from mdf. I have a lot of it leftover in my shop. The ones who do use it all indicate using a sealing agent like GAC100 before Gesso application. This isn’t a criticism of your preparation. I’m just curious. My wife’s mentor even states that Baltic birch and Masonite hardboard should receive a sealing agent to stop SID. So any insight here would be nice.

    Thanks Wim for sharing this video, I found it quite informative. I do have Sigma art lenses (28/1.4, 105/2.8 macro) and I do recognise your points. They have exceptional optical quality while being a monster. However, for me the 50mm focal length represents the general purpose EDC use case in which I am looking for the optimum of the size&weight, IQ and price factors. Recently I recognized that Nikkor 50/1.8G is the best compromise for that use case. In fact, after purchasing it I realized how good it is for landscapes having its sweet spot at around f11-13 as opposed to f4-5.6 that most of the lenses have. Yes, it does have to be AF fine-tuned, but that is a simple, 10min protocol. Some users noted how horrible the lens to lens optical variation is of this lens, but so far I did not get any significant disappointments beyond the strong CA below f4.

    Hello, I have had this camera for 7 years and I love it!!!! Since I've used it a lot, it's already very worn out and I've dropped it several times, but it still works. Now in 2024 I want to buy it again, although mirrorless ones are in fashion now, I am in a strong dilemma whether to buy it again or buy a mirrorless one? I think the mirrorless ones are going to continue selling, but the D7500 may be the last chance I have to get it again. But yes this camera, I love how it takes videos and photographs.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. I also have a Z50 because of the fact I can mount the great z lenses and f lenses. I found the color rendering of the z50 more accurate than the d7500.

      @@WimBals Hello ! Thank you very much for the advice. I was meditating and came to the conclusion that for now I want to buy the D7500, because DSRL cameras are going to disappear. And anyway, the mirrorless ones are going to continue to be on sale because they are now the new model. And in a few years when Reflex cameras no longer exist, buy the mirrorless one. I'm afraid I'll regret not buying it.

    this is a lense I would buy if I had no other primes, but I have a 35, 50 and a 90 mm macro so no need for it, but I do want to point out that 40 mm macro is in the middle of everything I just describe. Thanks for the videos you make! Cheers from Mexico

    Thank you for your thoughts about this lens. It makes me even more excited to get it and try it out with my D500, or should I use it with my D7200 instead?

      Both the D500 and the D7200 are splendid for this lens.

    I’ve had this lens for a good number of years and, it is still my favourite ones to use the telephoto. Unfortunately, with the newer cameras, it’s manual unless you use an older DSLR with the motor built into the camera. That’s why I’ve kept my D700 because with that Camera. This lens is awesome, thanks for sharing your thoughts , and I agree. with you on the fact that it is an excellent lens even in 2024

    with lens sharpness, by now I consider it not very important as any lens of today is sharp or can be stopped to an aperture to get sharp. However I look for things like contrast. In all terms, I used to compare test shots very closely but my photos rarely look like test shots. Like test shots quickly reveal sharpness falloff in the corners. For photos, it might even be an advantage to have the corners less sharp, as the subject is closer to the center. With the Nikkor 50 1.4G (I know you tested 1.8G here), it never gets as sharp if compared at same aperture as the 1.8G. But portraits look quite good with the 1.4G lens.

      I’ve had the 50mm 1.4 G for a while and it’s a good lens indeed, however I have replaced it with the 58mm 1.4G.
