This channel is mostly about sailing my homebuilt, stretched, junk rigged Paradox sailboat.
Some long forgotten footage from season2, including rising the mast and installing lead ballast
Some unused footage from season2, which includes setting the boat up for launching; but also recordings with gopro on gimbal, too cool to not to use it.

How I cast led ballast for my Paradox, using drywall panel molds, berried in the ground
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 3 lety
I share my experience on casting lead ballast pigs for my Paradox sailboat, using drywall panel molds, glued together with hot melt glue, berried in the ground and backed with soil. The quickest and easiest (and cheapest) way of making molds I could think of. I couldn't find any information that it has been done before, so it was an experiment. Successful at that. It took place between seasons ...

This is the third season of sailing my 20% enlarged, chinese junk rigged Paradox sailboat. Previously I have been sailing on a small lake, near home, now I am ready for the sea. I live on board, started in Käsmu on the northern coast of Estonia and sailing westward along the coast, visiting small islands on the way.

This video is the result of testing my mask with gopro mount. Conclusion: it's good if you need to work under water and both hands are busy. But it's difficult to hold the camera (head) steady when looking at something of interest, so you would get better footage, holding the camera in hand.

When I saw all that tube I thought you were going to lay a pipeline 😀 Very interesting boat!
Nice boat ! By the way even in old times the champagne bottles were prepared by scratching them before the ceremony...... good luck on all your voyages with her
Thanks! 🙂
What! Absolutely superior to the others!!
Thanks! :)
What I would like to see is your shop or any construction building images or notes. The choice and availability of wood which was used is exquisite. When you made the decision to enlarge the design by 20%, what changes did you see to the center of effort vs the center of lateral resistance and their relationship? Describe rudder pressures under sail. It's seems the hull design with the chines are purposefully built to sail fully heeled. It leads me to believe Mr Leyden designed the craft to have a sort of double keel or even a kind of non retractable but very Long leeboards where the angle when heeled is vertical. To summarize, I like the way you think.
Hi, Thanks for the king words ! You can see the building process on my blog here paradoxbuild.blogspot.com/ My "shop" was mostly my backyard and garage. I tried to keep the center of effort as close as possible to the original; but as I moved the mast a bit forward from the original position, the CE may have moved a bit forward as well. Yes, the boat is designed to be sailed heeled; there is no considerable pressure on rudder.
Very nice boat, beautiful craftsmanship. Small boats are great, easy to handle and maintain. Do you still sail the boat.? Would love to see more videos. Thank you for sharing your boat and adventures.
Thanks! Yes, I still sail the boat, but I have been more busy than I have liked in the few last years. I definitely plan to continue with new videos, hopefully the coming season I will be able to take longer time for sailing and making videos. :)
Hi Eerik, just stumbled on your video. What a nice boat and an impressive result of your skills, congrats! The paradox is THE best mini cruiser in my humble opinion. So many brilliant ideas are designed into it. Fair winds for you! 🤟🏻
Thanks!
I appreciate the video from inside the boat pointing aft. I have always wondered about the confront of the cockpit when close hauled. I see you sitting with your feet braced on the storage cubbies. Would you change anything in the design to add comfort when underway?
Thanks! I am quite happy with the setup.
Hi ...did you draft any plans ? Having increased the boat by 20% ?
hi, I just multiplied all the measurements by 1.2; used the original plans.
are the angles of heel extreme on the paradox?
I wouldn't say the heel is extreme. You can get some feeling of it in this video: czcams.com/video/N_3uhoWdb2g/video.html , from about 6min.
I imagine a Paradox with more of a birdwatcher type cabin.
merci

Looks like 15 to 20 knots. Very good build. Nice sheer. Great launch and first sail.

But just a question, why did you go with 20 %?
Hi, The designer has indicated, that it's OK to increase the design by up to 20%, keeping the material dimensions as per plans. Also, as this design requires some heeling for the chine runners to work; it will be difficult to heel a bigger boat in light winds when sailing alone. 🙂
@eerikmee2050 thank you for the response
I would guss this boat was a lot of work to build. Are you selling this boat or can you advise me where to find one?Thank yoh
Hi William, it was quite a bit of work, yes. I am not selling my boat, but if you look into Paradox Sailboat facebook group, there are boats available from time to time. There is one even now available in Oregon US.
Thank you.I refuse to use Facebook so I must find another way to contact the owner of Paradox in Oregon.Thank you for your amazing blog.
A friend of mine is a blue water sole sailor - I believe his sailboat is 33 feet, so larger, but for many of his meals he uses a solar cooker on deck. Set it up (and you can cook almost anything in a solar cooker), go about your day on the water until your stomach tells you it's time to eat. He's posted pictures of nut breads, meatloaf, beef stew, muffins - so many different things! Solar cooking is about time in the sun inside a solar cooker. It's like a nonelectric slow cooker. I mention this because it really is a wonderfully simple way to have a meal cook without any real help from the people on board the boat - once you've mixed up whatever you are making and put it in a pot inside the cooker, it's really hands off.
love the solar cooker idea
Beautiful sailing grounds, and a beautiful yacht. The finish work and attention to detail is exceptional. And it looks like a lot of fun to sail! Please keep the videos coming.
Your good ❤
Hi Erik, you did a great job, is it possible for me to share the drawings of the model you used? If you share it with me, I would like to have nice hours with my family with my skiing
Спасибо
Interesting. To my untrained eye it looks like the center of effort of the sail is too far back, behind the center of lateral resistance of the hull? But looking at other Paradoxes, they appear similar... I guess that's just suitably paradoxical 😅
Paradox has a big rudder blade that that moves the lateral area a bit further back; and the chine runners are also affecting on drag while boat is heeled.
5 feet is only 1.6 meters or so
It would be interesting to try a kite on this design !!!
Nice boat! Interesting to see you using a junk rig. Did you need to shift the location of the mast forward or is the usual Paradox placement already in a suitable location?
Looks like it's has a pronounced v-shaped bottom, hence not much initial stability, but the secondary stability should be very nice on this boat :)... There need to be pedals and thigh braces to firmly attach to and control the boat. Please tell, did you add it?
Hi Leonid, No, I didn't install pedals and thigh braces.
@@eerikmee2050 If you have an attitude, please try. Being fully attached with feet and thighs/knees to kayak makes the whole difference.
Hope to get new vids. soon!
A brilliant boat!
Lovely little island, thanks for bringing us along with you 👍.
Eerik, I am just starting my build and will probably go Junk Rig also. I believe the mast is forward of designed location. How did you determine what location to install mast? Thanks Erik (Ohio)
Hi George, As my mast is higher and accordingly is the part below deck; it didn't fit into the vent box above waterline, so had to do something. I moved it just fore of the bulkhead, so not much, 200mm or 8 inches the most. Another option would be to move the vent box slightly to the left and have the mast next to it (perhaps even just make it a bit narrower, leaving the mast spot outside of it), as close as possible to it's original location. That would also make the lines entering point through the deck to be on a better location. My lines enter just aft of the mast and they are interacting with the sail on SB tack. Not a big issue though.
Thank you for response! I have a while before I get to installing a mast so will do more research on best location (Sail balance/efficiency) as it applies to Paradox.
nice boat. Couldnt you use car batteries instead of the lead weights? maybe im missing something😀
Hi Hannes, The average density of the full car battery is lower than density of lead, so it would take up more space for ballast, that would leave less space for other things. Batteries are also higher than the space between bottom and cabin sole. As the idea for me was to be self sufficient, to be able to charge batteries with solar panels, then it wouldn't make sense to have more batteries than I can charge per day; also the biggest power consumer is the electric motor that I mostly use when going in or out of the Marina, so I found this to be enough for me, when this was decided. Maybe one day I will decide to add another 100Ah. There was another paradox builder that used wheelchair lithium batteries in his boat, but he got these for good price and the batteries were smaller in size, so fitted well. This would make sense to me as well. ☺
Hello, my name is Ary, I'm getting to know your channel now, I spent my life trying to buy sailboat, but I'm too old to wait, I'm 60 years old, so today I would like to build a boat like yours, can you help me? how can I get a plan to build a sailboat similar to yours sailboat?
Hi Ary, You can find information on getting the plans on this site: www.microcruising.com/plans1.htm It takes sometimes some days to get a reply, but as far as I know, everybody has got their plans. Good luck building yours. Cheers, Eerik
@@eerikmee2050 thank you so much, God bless you
Congratulations. Your sailboat is beautiful. Have fun and take on the sea.
Thanks!
funny guy :)
Does it go better upwind with the junk rig than the original lugsail?
Hi, I don't have comparison, so I cannot say for sure. It may also depend on who made a certain sail. But there was a comment recently, saying that battened lugsail would have better windward performance.
You've built a really beautiful sailboat, and the additional 20% must make life nicer for living aboard, in an already small space, a 20% increase can feel quite substantial. Wherever the camera rests, the very high quantity of your work shines through! She's a spirited sea sprinter when the wind is in play, a really nice boat in her natural habitat. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous sailboat build, its quite inspiring.
😌
Totally awesome! I'm building a junk rigged boat now, a sharpie 550, and I''m looking at your video as a guide to rigging the interior sheets, steering,, the rope box behind your mast, all that and I really need these details
Hi, You can find more information on my building blog paradoxbuild.blogspot.com The vent box inside details you can find on from decking till painting page and the cam cleat support final version on recent progress page. You can also have a look at how my sliding hatch is sealed on decking till painting page. If there is something you are interested in, but don't find an answer, you can find my e-mail address if you click on my name in comments in my blog.
replace the junk rig with multi-batten gaff rig and get 10% better performance up-wind, and no down-side.
Thanks! Maybe on my next boat 😉
Can you reef a multi-batten gaff rig the same way you'd reef a junk, by just lowering the halyard while underway?
Eerik, thanks for the Video. Would it be possible for you to add a map of your trip with your next video adventure? Safe travels.
Hi, I try to keep that in mind 😉
This is absolutely amazing!
the details of your boat, how the rigging is run etc....might be interesting. looking the vieo of end of your boom though was a real drag
Really nice paradox.
Thanks!
เยี่ยมเลยครับ😍😊
Nice built, well done. Have you enlarged all dimensions by 20%? Including the bulkheads, mast length, sail area etc? I am considering building it 20% stretched by length only. I believe the length was minimised because the designer wanted to fit the side walls into 2 sheets length of 12mm plywood.
Hi, Yes, I have increased all the measurements. Sail area about 1.2x1.2, ballast 1.2x1.2x1.2 as this is how displacement increases. Mast is a bit different as the sail type is different. I made it to match the sail. My guess is that if you just stretch the length, the sideways stability may suffer a bit…
This is impressive!
:) just a normal product development
Pretty damn amazing! Just change the colour say 2 tone n it’ll look super bombing
I love that trolling motor setup. How much solar panel you can put with the paradox? Your boat is sized to 1.2. Is it possible to get 200 w on the original size paradox? AGM battery works well as ballast weight.
I have 2x 50W panels now, and I don't want to use other spaces of decks, as the panels are slippery when wet.
