I think they should throw Super out and just rewrite GT while maintaining the same story beats just with better pacing and writing. SS4>all the God transformations IMO. Also there wasn’t SS4SS and Super Ultra BLUE mega super instinct with purple nipples, none of all this excessively random color bullshit, they actually put thought into it with it being tied to the Oozaru form.

Real real problem is SS4 will always be the coolest form

Frankly, the issue is just that Resurrection F isn’t a very good story. It’s not the worst dragon ball movie by far, some of the DBZ movies were just awful, but Res F really felt like it was trying to ride hype without offering much progression (compare to BoG which had really cool worldbuilding and introduced fan-favorite characters, DBS Broly was a really good character study with the best fights in the series, and Super Hero was a unique Piccolo spy movie). Which is fine, except the next arcs of DBS had to be built directly off Resurrection F with only minor story changes. Like imagine if the Lord Slug movie was canon and the entire Namek saga had to be built around Goku having already achieved Super Saiyan randomly against some King Piccolo rehash lol. If Resurrection F was a good movie that had good character development with Goku & Vegeta, the rapidly gained forms wouldn’t stick out so much. Like I don’t particularly like Orange Piccolo as a form but at least there was a story around Piccolo embracing his Namekian heritage to protect Earth

I personally like this new direction because it fixes the problem from before super which was that there was nothing really different about the Saiyans save for Gohan when he decides to go the perfect form route

You have to keep in mind that what you're talking about only happens in the anime, since most of the dbs anime is mostly written by toei animation and it is mostly driven by marketing. However, in the manga (AKA: toyotaro's version) each of these transformations is handled in a much more sensical way, especially super Saiyan blue, and ultra instinct, while not being a form itself, it still has a better introduction and development through each saga from top. I think the problem it got away from the ape origins. I don’t know why toriyama got rid of the tail or ape like features. That was the coolest part that made saiyans interesting. Something like ss4. But instead we just keep getting a hair color change to sell toys because they are lazy.

I personally think that they should stick with one form per every like 3 through 5 seasons but to keep it form getting boring making different variations of the form like if it’s like a purple form, the stronger the variation of it, the darker it gets.

So, the Buu saga is actually when I fell off the wagon for Dragon Ball. Sure I follow GT loosely, and I tuned into the first part of Super, but that was it. SSJ3 was too much. It made no sense to me (SSJ already had like 5 forms, why have another one?). Then in GT at least SSJ4 was derived differently: from the ape form first. So, it felt like a way to break the power ceiling without just powering up more. And SSJ4 was noted to be the absolute power ceiling (aside from fusion) for any Saiyan. And it felt good to know that. Similarly in Super - I like SSJ God because you got it not from powering up (even more), but from linking the powers of other Saiyans together to make a new form. But then when we got SSJ God Super Saiyan (i.e., blue hair), I was done. Not only did regular super saiyans seem pointless because of and power creep, the form itself wasn't really explained (or maybe I missed the explanation). Goku and Vegeta didn't have to go into SSJ God first, which to me seemed like it should have been a necessary step, they just did the transformation... but how? And then I stopped caring. Yes, I think UI is cool, but I mean, we have so many forms of SSJ now that they're all just meaningless to me. Next it's going to be "Ascended Super Saiyan" and then "Transcended Super Saiyan" and none of it will mean anything. Certainly none of it will ever mean as much as the first transformation Goku used against Frieza.

A factor that comes into play must be the time relevant to other power scaling Shonens in the manga space. Competition must've influenced some of these transformations the same way these transformations influenced the competition.

I feel like for old anime it should be Dbz Bleach Naruto One piece Yuyu And full metal For the new My hero Demon slayer Attack on titan Jjk One punch man What I like about the old anime is the nostalgia and the stories they had it was amazing seeing what would happen next as the weeks went by I’ll always love one piece specially but tbh the combat, and the newer animation styles and alot of the stories are just more interesting in the newer anime section they aren’t as basic or simple which can be a bad thing but I feel that they’re shorter experiences because they have a reason to end quicker they get straight to the point and that’s refreshing to see compared to the old anime the new anime also has alot of emotions in it that people tend to look past they know how to make you feel good I still think one piece has the upper hand in that tho but yes I think team new anime is more my choice but I will say that hunter x hunter and one piece will always be in my top 5

At this point, I see Dragon Ball as a video game first. The story of the manga/anime has always sucked (except arguably "before the Z came in the title", when it was a pure comedy). The only thing this franchise does well, IMO? Giving you a bunch of cool looking, buff dudes (and a few dudettes), to fight with in the context in a game. ...But as a narrative/drama/story? Dragon Ball is a complete fail, and kind of always has been for most of its existence.

I just wanted to point out a couple of things. Shimanuki and Hisada were both animation directors at Seigasha. They would be promoted in episode 68 (which Shimanuki ADed) when Takeuchi stepped down, and they would then trade off episodes as supervisors. Also Masunaga did not work at Seigasha. He was the animation director at Studio Cockpit with whom Iwane worked under.

Thank you for this essay 👏 the writing of this show has really fallen off. On a business side the executives and producers of the show are focused on attracting a new younger audience to continue selling stuff to so that’s in part why visuals and dialog are the way they are, but overall, writers just got lazy and have constantly been giving unearned power ups to keep things exciting. But too much of the same thing is bad for you (eg too much sugar will lead to diabetes)

The problem is they all look terrible, uninspiring and for children's marketing.
