Another thing Primal Space never mentioned is how fountain pens also used capillary action to control their own ink's flow, the ballpoint is just a compressed mechanism for doing the same thing as the nib of a fountain pen in a smaller space, with less material. This is why oil based ink needed to be developed for ballpoint pens at all.

Today is the first time I'm hearing the name BIC Cristal

for someone like me who writes a lot and uses more pens than usual, its nice to learn the history behind ball point pen.

There's the BS connection of literacy and BIC pen, but no mention of the true reason this (and other) ballpoint pen sales skyrocketed: THE CARBON COPIES. To make an impression on carbon copy paper you have to press hard when writing. Neither fountain pens nor pencils like being pressed hard when writing. Carbon copy paper made the fountain pens go from soft, golden nibs, to hard, steel nibs, but it was a compromise and you still could break a fountain pen when writing through carbon copies. The ballopint was a solution making it possible to fill forms, or even write original notes through carbon copy paper without any issue with the writing utensil. BIC made this cheap enough so that you could furnish everyone, be it gas meter reading guy or a postman or... with an actual writing pen that nobody cried over if it got lost or stolen.

Using this pen from around 12-15 years, and my parents also used this for 40-45 years... Didnt knew pens were that expensive in past, in india from last 2 decades the price of this pen is only $0.035 and if you buy a while packet you gonna get it at as low as $0.020 or may be 0.015 🤯 If i got time machin i know what business to start 🥸

What I like most about these bic pens Is another important fact. The biggest change in the pen since It's inception Is the little hole in the cap. Which is credited as the invetion saving the most lives world wide. This pen is very ubicuatise. and all over the world people chew on their caps. sometimes they gep the cap stuck in their throt. the little hoe insure air can get in even when you accidetnly inhable the cap.

Literacy rates in West were already high (as they were in brush-using Asia) by the time these came about, but our writing has become just as cheap, disposable, meaningless and waste-producing as the pens, and everybody ditched them for screens and printing as soon as they could. Id be happy to hear about some of the changes in the design over time. For example the stopper fluid. When i was younger i was always puzzled by what it is for.

Someone should bring this back.

Fun fact: Despite well known as one of big producer of ballpoint, China couldn't make the ballpoint tip until their industrial spies uncovered the secret of producing it in early 2000s.

It is crazy that we take something as small as a pen for granted.

That is why handwriting quality has also declined. People had beautiful handwriting years ago. Now we have baby writing.

I've actually never used this pen. (Gen z obviously). But i feel that this pen is still way better than other pens currently in market. Really fascinating how things were made with this precision back then .
