This video stress the point of understanding the relationship between proper matching components for an engine that performs to its fullest potential. My personal formulas for calculating HP that I use on every build.
Beautiful 496 Big Block Chevy Stroker! test run!

454 Big Block Chevy that has been stroked out to be a 496. Engine was completely designed by Ken, customer dropped off a block and a stack of cash and let Ken have full say on what goes into it. This thing sounds amazing, the camera DOES NOT do this thing justice. Mysterious Radical Race Engine! MUST SEE!!!
So its a 289.......keep saying it and maybe it will come true. No, its a 336 SBF not a 289. Just like a 427W is not a 351W anymore. So BS..... I guess a 521CI BBF is just a 460???? Nice click bait, you got me. 525HP 289 cubic inch, NA 336..... thats phUNNY. PHALSE ADVERTISING. Build a real 289 that has a stock HiPo forged 289 std/std crank in it, NA with Inglese and let us see the dyno sheet.
question.... will the lifters follow the pushrods as i loosen the rockers? motor is used daily. please answer
Vice Grip Garage does the exact same thing! Old school is the way.
This is the best way to adjust valves. Thanks for the video. This is the most sensible way to do valve adjustments while others struggle by following the firing order. Derek on V.G.G. does this method.
Love the old iron head Pontiac sound thru a good set of headers
Dude, I was overthinking so much after removing my rocker arms on how to adjust them, but this method is so easy and you don't have to worry about anything, AMAZING !
Will this work if I already ran the engine and there is oil in the lifters? Or is there a way to get the oil out of them ?
Cleveland heads welded together to make one..
Id sure like to see the aftermarket cast an aluminum hemi head or at least a crossflow for all the old 6 guns, it would make a huge diffrence in efficency and power which as you know go hand in hand. I always tell my clients," smooth is power " the smoother and more efficient , the more power you get.
Ho and now you got a new subscriber.
Wow thanks a lot. I am about to adjust a 1995 ford van 5.8 that i am working with this will help a lot. The only difference is mi lifters are the existing ones and they are loaded with existing oil . The book says i need a little fork tool witch i am about to fabricate . To finally push and bleed the remaining oil then calibrate. On my Chevy 454 i will do just like you did with this . Mind opening 🤯💯
Great video! I was wondering if this method would work for any 4 stroke motor no matter the cylinder count as long as it has hydraulic lifters and adjustable push rods??
What a great video by a great guy! Kudos to Ken!
You forgot the last part broooo
I was taught that back in 84..when I graduated dadc..it does work. .and works well. It don't mater what engine you have as long as it has hydraulic lifters ...and yes never soak lifters. Just do it this way. And you can't go wrong
I understand the concept and do something quite similar to lawnmower engines from 2 and a half hp to 25 hp that have ohv except some of them will only take finger tight and lock the set screws . And of course on 283 350 what ever I'm working on I believe in 3/4 of a turn
Can this procedure be done with engine assembled..
I hardly ever touch my old engines .but got another hot rod with a messed up set of heads ..I got a good set to install ..can I use this method with the engine still in the car ..it's a 37 ford sedan so it's a tight fit for a 350 all tho it's s10 chassis underneath ....
You are talking like hydraulic lifters are all the same. Took me hours of videos to realize there are different types that need different methods.
Will this stop the engine ticking sound?
Do you want the rod to not be able to spin at all?
the dirty parts bit drives me up a wall
The Chuck Norris of engines 😉
Should the push rods spin after adjusting? Just as long as I have 0 lash?
Did you ever figure out!
I followed these instructions 5yrs ago on a small block chevy. Worked great. Will I be able to use this on a 1990 f150. With a 302 thanks.
Can I use this method after valve seal change
Hi Ken, excellent instruction! Will this technique work on my 1994 V-6 3.8 T-Bird SuperCoupe? I didn’t have much success following the Service Manual.
How did you add onto a head for an additional 2 cylinders?
Thats the fastest way ??? You just took 20 mins to adjust 16 valves?? Put a starter on the motor with a starter button on it bump each cylinder to closed position and set the lash on each cylinder 1 at a time ???? Fastest ???????????
This is a very simple easy method of adjusting hydronic lifter. Very excellent job and you makes it very easy for me. I have been having a hard time adjusting the valve lash on my pontiac using the other method where rotate the engine until you see the intake rise and close and exhaust start to move. That method wouldn't work for me. Thanks to you Sir for introducing your method.
I learned this way of adjusting lifters on a 65 289 mustang when I was 18 years old been doing since
Were you all located?
Did it this way but after 4 full rotations I keep having a couple come loose.... Worried about over tightening them
Why isn't this considered the standard way of adjusting valves!?! My only worry is that i just replaced heads and head gaskets on my 85 chevy truck with a 327,didn't replace lifters so they already have oil in em. Will they still adjust the same as with them dry? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom Ken! Gonna subscribe!
Are you wiggling side to side or up abd down ?
M That is a three hundred ford block with boss 302 head
Hey Ken thank you very much for your teaching. I am new to small blocks. Does this also work for a small block which was running on the street yesterday and is still in the car? I would try this by removing the valve cover without the engine running and starting to adjust like you told.
What tools do i need to prime the oil up through the push rods u were talking about in the video
That's a masterpiece. Great work.
What do you think of comp cams?
Magnificent! 🫡🇺🇸👍🏻
Hi. I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 4x4 I just acquired. Had to replace a spring retainer cap and a pivot retainer and bleed down two stubborn lifters. I tried your method, but after turning the crank some are EXTREMELY tight and some seem "normal". Is this the way it's supposed to be? I did this while the engine is still in the car without removing the top (intske) part.
I just bought a 76 f150 4x4 with a smoking 390 with bad valves. The 2 car lot owner failed to mention that to me. My answer..haha. pull out the 390/c6 so i can put a 300/np435 in it.
Back in the early 70's Jimmy Lindsay of Guelph , Ontario . Canada built the same combo and ran it in a Maverick very successfully. I have no idea what ever became of him or the engine.
Hi. What if my engine has been built already and ran? How would I adjust with oil in the lifters?
I did exactly what he said and my engine blew up wt-heck - - - QUESTION: what if the lifters are full of oil how do you get the oil out? maybe just turn them upside down and let them drain out for a few days?
Dave 10 years ago I had 0 failure on hydraulic flat tappet lifters. I built 1 amc 304 and lost a cam ..I sent everything back to comp cam for no warranty. I had erson build another flat cam and used clay Smith hydraulic flat tappet lifters. I haven't lost a cam since using clay Smith If you haven't tried them do it.. Roger Bess
Best info anywhere.
The Cleveland head . Is heavily influenced by the big block Chevy canted valve head . Basically ford built a race engine the Cleveland . To beat Chevy . A small block with big block heads . The way I heard it . Cylinder head guru. Lee Shepard .Was especially interested in this combo . And nay be the original idea source . RMS lost a lot more than there pro stock driver . When Lee died . He was a cylinder head porter of unique talent
You are the man.
