A big fan of Ken Blanchard and Randy Conley. I was blessed to be part of their book launch team for their book Simple Truths of Leadership: 52 ways to be a servant leader and build trust. Everyday you develop more strength for the depths of your roots, grow more branches to reach more, and bloom with the fruits of your work to feed many. Incredible men, work and influencers in modeling the importance of the critical core values. Great podcast!

Very interesting timing for me and your conversation, Carey, because I was doing some personal investigation regarding AI chat bots. Please know that I am 73, a retired pastor, non profit professional, and business executive. I received a DM through X regarding my interests in golf. I was posting a lot because of the US Open plus other golf involvements. The person (supposedly a woman) wanted to know if I would help her understand the game. I said sure. That started a week long conversation on a million things, and I quickly concluded that it was a chat bot, who was after something. I played along to experience this. The experience was very real at times. The big problem was that they were trying to defraud me of money. I was just concerned that people would be taken advantage by this technology. There is also another version called “flirting.” There are platforms wanting you to connect with people (really chat bots) and they charge you for every conversation on their platform. I could see a lonely person paying lots of money to have a conversation with someone, not knowing it is a chat bot. Dangerous stuff! I am concerned about vulnerable seniors, but anyone could be vulnerable. Sad.

Just wondering though how you deal with being disciplined when your dealing with chaotic events. For instance, I started eating really bad because I was pregnant and my husband got cancer. There was no way I could really discipline my eating while going to cancer treatments with him then nursing a new baby. Then after that he had to go through a bone marrow transfer during 2020 covid crisis. I worked tremendous hours as an architect and 2 kids at home who couldn't go to school because of the pandemic. Therefore I couldn't lose the baby weight and gained even more weight. How do you still have discipline under crisis? And how do you reestablish good habits after crisis? Once you have destroyed your good habits because being under crisis. I would LOVE podcast on this. This is what I am dealing with right now.

As the only Evangelical in our small group of Counselors discussing ways to aid people with mental and emotional distress, I hoped to find one or two friendly voices. The support came from a very surprising source; the former President of the APA, and a well known Atheist. After several heated exchanges, Dr. Mowrer, said, “I agree with Gary. I am not a Christian or religious at all, but I have studied psychology and counseling for decades. I have concluded that the early Christian church was the most powerful healing community the world has ever seen. It began in the middle of some of the most brutal and evil practices of slavery in history but when people joined those churches their lives changed dramatically.’ I had never heard anyone say such a thing in my life as ac believer. I returned to my university position dedicated to do my best to encourage churches to be healing growth communities. That requires us to equip every member to relate with the mercy, grace, and truth of God.

I think it should be said that he makes sure to note SHE started the direct messaging and SHE did so with great frequency - so much so that he brought it up to his wife. Somehow it spiraled to the point where a friend of hers had to confront him over it. When all was said and done, she kind of comes off as the "bad guy" and he received a standing ovation and is thought of as brave and humble. Maybe this is all true but maybe it's more deflection and spin however subtle. I think we've learned to question more because we've been manipulated so many times by people in power.

It seems like Matt is at a better place, but who really knows he will have to walk the journey like the rest of us and have very good support, I’m glad he has reached out for help and hopefully he’s getting some psychotherapy on hischildhood wound, which probably made him have a lack of the needed attention, so that when he had inappropriate contact with the other woman I know he didn’t say it, but I’m sure there was some romantic and flirting to it or he would have not been put on a leave, I actually don’t think three months is enough. I think that is way too short and I don’t think his staff were harsh on him at all. I think they were a bit too lenient. I think something like this has got to be at least six months if not a year And there’s so much we don’t know what about the other woman is she having problems in her marriage and they’re obviously getting attention with each other that they’re not getting in their marriage and how do their spouses feel about it? I’m sure there’s a lot going on more than anyone will ever tell because it’s so hard for pastors and their wives to talk about this stuff openly and they probably need more healing before they’re gonna be able to share it if they wanna share it. I think it would be good to share more when they are ready because people are struggling with this, married couples do flirt and they get in trouble some are OK and the marriage is saved but some aren’t so this is a very important topic in the church. I’m glad you asked him about this, and you were able to confront what needed to be confronted. I think you had some softball questions to him so I would toughen it up a little bit more, these leaders are in the limelight a lot so they need to be ready in and out of season to answer tough questions if they can’t do it then what are they doing then? Something else I don’t know but I think he might be way too busy but that’s gonna be for him and His family to judge. I hope he’s learn what he needs to do so he doesn’t put himself in temptation again. 🙏🏻❤🙏🏻

Excellent interview! His work with dozens or hundreds of key people have impacted millions of people without them even being aware. Here’s a thought on how to get his wisdom and influence into the lives of millions with a possible impact on billions. What if someone captured his experiences in detail (like the above interview but only on steroids). This wouldn’t be to create a biography or a documentary, but to create a TV drama series. The model I’m picturing would be similar to the TV legal drama show based on the career of real life Dr. Phil McGraw. The series, called “Bull”, follows the Trial Analysis Corporation (TAC), a jury consulting firm headed by psychologist and trial-science expert Dr. Jason Bull. Bull uses his skills to select the right jurors for his clients, and to help his clients' lawyers decide which type of argument will win over jurors best. Each episode, or short series of episodes, could feature a Wm Ury character jetting around the world to help resolve conflicts and prevent disasters, while also using those skills to resolve conflicts at home, and with the local neighborhood association, or other conflict situations that are ‘real life’ to the viewers. Every episode could be subtly seasoned with principles and practices that could help people resolve conflicts, negotiate agreements, and be more compassionate to each other. Thousands of scenarios come to mind that could benefit from the ideas presented in this interview and in Ury’s books. A TV show could get these ideas to people in conflicts who desperately need to learn to count to 10 and listen. Or as S. Covey says, they need to learn to “seek to hear and understand before being heard and understood.” I‘ll read his books, but millions would watch a show like this. Just a thought.

Sadly my least favorite podcast in years --though well intentioned it tries to sound heroic and middle ground with an unbiblical vacillating position --I was disappointed as a Carey supporter and follower ...this pastors equivocation on biblical morality genuinely saddened me :( Its so much easier to accommodate and placate dominant culture in the name of love ( particularly when it comes to family definition -gender distinction and homosexual practice) --but much harder to confess a biblical position that is counter cultural ( and more than just the Gospels which I love) living in and pastoring in San Francisco as I do-- I see this first hand it costs little to say i'm in the middle ( to say i'm in the middle validating both perspectives is actually to take a side)--standing for nothing in the cloak of love with straw man arguments about the extreme right when in a sad way it betrays the beautiful pursuit of holiness that Wesley personified .. i do believe as someone ministering in a blue progressive city in the center of an area where this is my cultural and missional reality that its much harder to stand in humility and grace for the confessed truth ( of the scriptures and confessed by the church for generations ) around biblical morality and marriage (exclusive in scripture for a man and a woman -and clearly articulated by Jesus) .. I want to by Gods grace be part of the confessing church and not the affirming church ( I would desire though imperfectly and perhaps at the risk of being mis-understood to contend for the "faith once delivered" ... for the Son of Man came to us as the Word made flesh full of grace & truth --not just grace ( or just truth)
