Steve Werner stopped by for some tunes over the holidays and we played "Homesick for the Highway Blues", a song of his that was initially recorded on the 2009 CD "Travelers". The rest of us haven't played the song before. Obin is practicing train noises on the pedal steel, so lots of trains on this highway (first one already coming at you at 34 seconds in).

Mineola Rag was originally recorded by the East Texas Serenaders, maybe late 20s, a string band with fiddle, banjo, guitar, and 3-string cello - no mandolin, though. Mineola is a small Texas town about 80 miles east of Dallas. Anya Sturm plays an oval-hole Collings mandolin. Roland Sturm a 1922 Gibson F2.
Beaumont Rag on mandolins

picking some tunes in our backyard. Beaumont Rag is one of the tunes in the grey zone between old-time music and jazz, lots of similar tunes were recorded by Texas string bands in the 1920s. The tune we go into at the end is a 1930 jazz standard (Lazy River by Hoagy Carmichael).

An old 9-string Waldzither that I found in Germany, no name, probably Thüringen from about 1900-1920. It has mechanical tuners like a guitar, although worn-out and difficult to keep in tune. Some buttons disintegrated and needed to be replaced. Also long crack in the back that I cleated.

Returning again to my favourite Martin and Dennis recording to find that Dennis has passed. Memories of a summer school concert in Limerick where they blew the roof off (it was a medieval cathedral roof so no mean feat) and having the privilege of being in a small guitar class for an afternoon talking tunes and playing with this fine player, teacher and really nice guy.
This is special. I don't have the words. Rest In Peace Dennis.
Coming back to remember Dennis as I've learned of his passing... this is still one of the best sets I've ever heard. I come back to it all the time, and I know I'll keep doing so for a long while yet. I'm a better musician and a happier person for having their work in my life.
This set is one of my favourites too I often come back here for a listen but I just learned of Dennis passing too so sad.. hope it wasn’t those blasted jabs!!!
