I love re-watching these videos. Notice, not a single pair of sweatpants, or overly revealing clothing in sight? We have lost all self respect or modesty and it's depressing.
14:38 - This was the beginning of Flash, guys. The earliest days.
I've never used a U Force controller before, but Mike Tyson's Punch Out is such a fantastic NES game.
Jim Kent was sexy back in the day 🙂❣️
"We really owe a lot of advancements in our tracking of people based on specific features and looks, to our German benefactors in the 1940s." - IBM
Imagine anything with only 200MB of space costing $5,000 😂
Gary killed all 🙏🏻
20:00 still relevant, interacting with a LLM in 2024 feels very much like a cooperative effort and experience
Oh, the Winner's Circle computer store. That store was a mess, it was full of tennis gear and computers all stacked on top of each other.
Damn... Global View trying to one up Windows. Microsoft's rep claiming that Windows 3.0 doesn't run on DOS. Throughput of 1.5MB/s was noteworthy. 6 fonts for 400$... Interesting times. I'm happy they're over :)
People want fully capable local clients not dumb terminals. Which the failure of these products has proven. The model today of server provided applications when appropriate, local applications and network dependant application is the best of both worlds. You have all the advantages of cloud apps when its useful and all the benefits of powerful local hardware when its useful. These one size fits all models don't work, you really need malfunctional hybrid models. And this is how the market evolved. A mix of high powered servers and high powered clients is what the modern internet is.
It is still 'early days of virtual reality'
Wouldn't it be cool that instead of a radio like experience you could just search for a song and listen. Like a aearch engine that streams music...
Wow i was born the 29th of this month and year. Pretty wild to think about
I'm watching this video about video on cellphones on my cellphone right now...
Oh yeah, test drive. We had this on our family pc in glorious 4 color cgi!
I worked on my first computer in 1967. It was a teletype in my high school connected to an IBM in another state through a phone line at 300 baud rate. It used Basic and also had a crude word processor.
I see some software programs I surely "missed" by employment and interview rejections during the 1990s decade. As an avid typist, I could learn about anything to do on a [micro]computer. In 2002, I eventually treated myself to a microcomputer with Microsoft Windows XP Professional, a Canon color laser printer, and a scanner. Microsoft Office XP Professional contained Microsoft Access 2002. Microsoft Access is available only in the Office Professional edition, along with Microsoft Publisher. I explored the other application programs by learning and trying new methods and they made my computer use quite easy. It omitted the mundane tasks of making business productivity easier. Microsoft Word has been my "springboard," because it has complemented my keyboarding skill. Microsoft Access became my favorite business application. I use it quite extensively and do many jobs without extra training, for which I would have to buy. I have been creating my own tables, forms and most queries without using help from the Wizard. I tried using the Report part of the database, and I have been able to design them, since I have had a color laser printer. My documents look professional and attractive as printed on laser paper. Since I have not been given opportunities to learn to use the microcomputer in the early years, I do not miss the employment opportunities at people's workplaces unhappily. Incidentally, Microsoft Access is a relational kind of database program. Today, I use Microsoft Office 2021 Professional Plus, featuring Microsoft Access 2021. It makes doing mundane tasks as simple as keyboarding data. As a result of the bad things and then the good things, I am doing fine. I am free. This show was probably made for me in mind.
he spelt SPREDSHEET wrong lol @ 08:47 and his MEMO is in a DAIRY!!!! any cows?
Internet was actually born on hawaii on a nightclub called coconut bar. The event, when it happend calls "the big ape-escape" by a kemist who mixed a drink in a very, very complex way. 🍹 So please stay true to pleasure!
Windows NT is actually faster than Vista in terms of soda/ fishery power- it loads apps in negative time. That makes NT the fastest negotiation-system in the world, even faster than a thirsty soak.
24:34 and this is exactly what happened. A little strange to hear it now, but cool at the same time. 😃
Is Windows NT 3.x IDE support? I have 486 pc and 12 mb ram. And I maybe try MS-DOS and Windows NT double boot.
I forgot how awesome win95 was.
I LOVED pong! It was my favorite arcade game at my childhood local bowling alley. PRE home computer games at home.. at least for me. LOL
Well I can see this problem today. Was setting up a vintage pc for dos games, some apps in their file explorers see 2024 as ?4 and dont seem to understand what 2000 or 20 are. Yet its not like it crashes or anything.
Interesting talking about apple hitting 20% in reality once windows 95 launched they dropped to more like 5%
The competition had Super Mario Bros, Tetris, and RAD RACER!?! Rad Racer was one of my favorite games back then, hell yeah!! 👍
Hearing men in suits saying they'd lower prices, and dont think quite get the hackers motives. Archival has become so needed, as men in suits and their lawyers dont care about preservation as want you to buy the new version of older better things you already "own".
Playing Menace is easy with sprite collision off,
Stewart always plays dumb asking questions about who needs faster speed, more ram, and larger hard drives. It is annoying.
This is one of the coolest videos I've seen in all of CZcams and I had NO IDEA that computerized music technology was this advanced back then. This video has so many mind blowing things in it for the time. Thanks for posting this, Computer Chronicles channel!
And of course, MS killed the Start Menu that people liked. They did not go into details about W95 being mostly 32bit and why it is better than W3.x 16 bit hell.
This show was great. It is awesome to see these shows when they had no idea how far computer tech would go. So what will they be in 30 to 40 more years? For sure, computer security will still be required. AI in 1984, LOL.
@13:15, the floating desk for Inquiry Inc is held up by two 12-case beer boxes. Love it, i would have chosen a similar setup. Why pay more when you can DIY? Back then custom PC desks were not being sold.
I come here for buying advice in 2024. Gonna start looking into these PCMCIA cards.... #mindblown. AND a 486DX2 60MHz super portable laptop for only $3800 USD!!??? Ill be putting that in my 'bargain' bin for later.
It's all about the pentiums, baby.
I just finally got my first set of 386 and 387dx
11:04 wtf did that man just say moment by the host
I had a C-64 back in the 80's and vaguely remember hearing about modems but had no idea what it was all about. I wish I would have looked into it further back then as I would have had a head start on the Internet gold rush
nah its 2024 so Im going to stay on Windows 95
I tried using the Compuserve keyword and it didn't work. :(
17:30 "programmers still need to get together and exchange ideas in face-to-face meetings - something a network has yet to replace"
These shows should be in a museum and archived forever. Amazing chronicle of the entire beginning of the information age.
I wish that KEN SENT ME back to the day before he met Roberta. not that I could have done anything about it (i was 13).
I didn't first discover the real Internet until the summer of 1995... before then it was AOL. Once I saw the light it was an incredible epiphany. WIsh I would have discovered it in 1993 as I'd probably be a zillionaire
Gary kildall was a genius. Allways focused and pointing in the right direction. Admire.
Me in 2020: watching a youtube video about how to buy a computer in 1993.
The Magnavox Headstart 500CD was the first new computer I bought. Wooff it was about 3000 bucks with the monitor and speakers and math Co pro and memory upgrade. I had to mow so many lawns and fix a lot of computers to afford it. It had so many cool games that came with it, Lotta good memories!
I'm watching every episode in order, I skipped a couple, but this new format is amazing. That new guy, with opinions really razzes the place up as can get dry.
