Yeah and we have LOTS of poisonous snakes and gators and feral hogs and skeeters and gnats...man eating fungi....man eating spiders....especially YANKEE eating spiders...rats as big as raccoons, man eating deer.....opossums that eat the deer and great white sharks that patrol the waters off myrtle beach and folly and edisto and beaufort and zombies that haunt the streets of Charleston at night especially along the battery ready to pounce on the unsuspecting Yankee looking to gentrify seemingly depressed neighborhoods...................................

I drove from California to check it out. Traffic, that is, for me, the number one reason I would never move there. To me, Greenville is for young people, with beautiful downtown condos and lots of hiking trails.

Moved to Charleston in 86 moved out in 2000 the traffic is horrible My buddy is a native Charlestonian he just moved to Greenville the traffic is horrible my daughter just bought a house in N.Charleston traffic is a disaster The wages are low all over the south the healthcare is sub par the property tax has gone up steadily and is unafordable there is no good pizza or deli cause the water is undrinkable without reverse osmosis the roads are terrible and the infrastructure can not support the population boom and enjoy the giant palmetto bugs if you like being called a damn yankee and told to get the F out have at it

Dude, I live in Ce3ntral Florida. South Carolina has nothing on us when it comes to heat and humidity. Plus, our heat starts around Valentines Day, and ends right after New Years Day.

I am interested in buying a home out there. I am retired, and want to know what city is best for people my age. Although all the "cons" can never compare to S. California--it has become a nightmare to live here in the Disneyland Town. The crime is out of control, there are hundreds of people living on the streets, it's outrageously expensive--$2500.00 for a one bedroom, I am sure SC is not as bad as S. Cali.

SC born and raised, and unfortunately people moving here are the problem with the state. Big money from higher earning states mixed with stagnant local wages have essentially priced us out of our own state. A home that was $200,000 10 years ago is now over $500,000. Local costs of goods and services have gone up too. I understand it has for everyone, but trust me the market is adjusting for foreign money and not local SC earners. Edit/conclusion: GO TO FLORIDA! Leave us be please, but feel free to come by and visit for a bit

Honestly South Carolina is a lot more interesting and a lot cheaper in comparison to Florida. Florida has insane cost of living in the best areas along most coastlines and while it certainly is cheaper to live in Florida the further north you go, is still doesn't change the fact that you need a good amount of money to pay in insurance alone. South Carolina on the other hand is a pretty good sized state to live in. If you like to live in a area close to the mountains, Greenville is only about a 20-30 minute drive from Appalachia. Columbia is a fast growing city which is centralized in the middle. Great to live there compared to the overcrowded Charlotte, NC just a couple hours drive northeast. It's great to stay here if you love hiking but also the beach as you can plan long weekend trips to either area. If you like big cities you can get to Atlanta in about 4 hours and the already mentioned Charlotte in a couple. Charleston and Myrtle Beach are great locations if you are a coastal lover, which most people with money are. These cities are quickly growing and are soon going to become difficult to live in if you don't make $100k a year in your household. I frequent Charleston area every May and soon to also be every October as well and I can tell you that the area has boomed in population over the last decade, much to my dismay. Wish it was half as crowded as I remember it being when I was a teenager. For Florida though I'm not a massive fan of it. If you aren't living along the coastline you are living in such a flat, boring and hot climate that is just torture. Why live there if you aren't living by the coastline is beyond me. You can live far away from water in other states that actually have beauty and things to do. Plus much of that nothingness in centralized Florida is just farmland or swamp. Not ideal.

I grew up outside of Boston, I love SC !! The weather, yes!! I got sick of 9 to 10 months of winter and I have now been bitten by the gardening bug !! I live in NE Columbia and people here are friendly , but they cannot drive here !! 🙄🙄

I've seen alligators in Myrtle Beach One day there was one on the bank of the pond at Barefoot Landing, with people walking by and the 'gator was acting like he owned the pond. See 'gators in Lake Marion too. :)

Sales tax approaching 10% in South Carolina in some counties after add on for local tax. Plus just about everything gets taxed. If you are a non-resident property owner in either Florida or South Carolina real estate taxes are off the charts. Very, very expensive! Insurance costs in both states also very expensive and continuing to escalate making cost of home ownership extremely expensive along coastal areas. Gasoline less expensive in South Carolina due to lower state gas tax. But this is reflected in poor condition of many roads there. South Carolina is much less congested than Florida which makes it a better choice for quality of living.

Seems everybody is telling you don't move here, don't move there? Every place has their positive and negative, I decide myself where to move and adjust to the area, spent 20 years active Army retired disabled veteran, Been to Iraq it was terrible living in the hot desert.

Just bought on HHI. The cost of the home insurance… wow. Sticker shock. And the tax for non-resident. But, it’s worth it. We love HHI.

The real estate taxes in the city of Charleston are a nightmare. $35,000/ year on a 3.5 million house, and nothing on the peninsula is less than $800,000…no public schools

I just moved to SC. I hear you about the traffic. Better learn alt routes lol. What I learned about sc in the 4 months I have been living here. Once you see the beach and marsh walks there's really nothing else. There some restaurants but your gonna pay. The seafood buffets all stink and not fresh. I got sick 3 times already. The seafood dept in any store is not fresh. I use to buy seafood once a week. I try not to buy it now. It always has a smell to it. The only thing is mb fishing if you can fig out where to go. Mb more south in charleston is diff. I have no idea why myrtle beach is a travel destination. Alot of driving you have to do. Dont get me wrong sc has its perks. But you have to wade through everything to find it

I grew up in SC and spent the last 10 years in FL. North Florida is my favorite place. That area shares more in common with SC culturally, and has a much lower cost of living a way more beautiful coastline. Comparing the two states is like Texas to Oklahoma or California to Oregon. Florida is a megastate with close to 23M people... And SC is really beginning to come in to its owm as a destination for retireees. Roads: SC and I-95 being two lanes is an absolute disgrace - So is not widening I-26 to three lanes (all the way) between Columbia and Charleston. I like both states, but it's hard to compare any southern state to Florida, which more than 4X the population of SC.

Theres the sme things in these states if you are running from prices or crime you aren't getting anywhere. Everything is 3 times the price.
