REVIEW: Tricolate Coffee Brewer! Does this replace the AeroPress?
The Tricolate brewer is a non-bypass filter coffee brewer that looks to combine some of the best elements of pourover brewers, like the V60, and non-bypass brewers like the Aeropress. In this review we try it out and see if it's good enough to become our favourite filter brewer.

I'm a just a bit lost...why are you setting the shot for an espresso on the 'short' button? Isn't that for a ristretto? Being new to coffee in general, I am getting a tad confounded by what seems to be an inconsistency in terms and values: Oz and mls (surely if everyone stuck with mls...I mean what is an Oz - weight or volume, and I can easily visualise mls?), a nespresso ristretto is 25ml, espresso is 40ml, yet real espresso is 30ml, a double is 60ml, and now this video is discussing an espresso weighing 25g - but what is the volume? And if an espresso, why not use the espresso button to set it? I have a Creatista Pro and the default espresso setting is roughly 40ml (but with a slider to go up and down - why and for what purpose I don't know). Any help via a response here would be helpful. I did start out with a Bambino Plus and Smart Grinder Pro, bought two bags of local roasted beans, went from grind setting 15 down to 1 and in IMS baskets weighed 18g pulled consistently rapid sour shots. In a hot sweat I gave it up!. Still lost!

Chaff has ZERO discernable flavor impact on your cup of coffee. I roast coffee and have plenty of chaff. I put 3 g of chaff, FOUR CUPS of it to getv3 grams & poured 300 mL of water over it. I then let it steep for 4 minutes. What the chaff didn't absorb I poured into a cup. I had about 160ml of chaff water. It had virtually no flavor. It was like a thrice brewed bag of tea; VERY WEAK. There's NO WAY this can impact the flavor of your coffee. The CZcams influencers need likes to keep the algorithm swinging to their content. This vid is algorithm food with no other value.. Hi, Some people get obsessive about cleaning grinders, but IME it's something to do periodically rather than once a week. Regarding grind settings, I've always preferred to go quite fine - so for Aeropress a few steps back from the range for espresso and for pourovers a little coarser still. Without having the Niche in front of me I can't recall exact settings, but as an example, on my EK I go for 1.2 - 2.0 for espresso, 2.0 - 2.5 for Aeropress and 2.5 - 3.5 for pourover. Hope that helps.

I think as soon as you are adding in scales and faff then the essential idea of the simplicity of using a pod machine is lost. I would only buy one for the "lazy" procedure of popping in a pod and pushing a button (I am currently a full coffee nerd using both a Niche grinder and a Sage BBE or a Hario switch for filter). This seems to be the least expensive way of getting close to "proper" coffee with no faff.

@@TheCoffeeChannel I did end up watching the video, I just wanted to make my prediction beforehand. You can actually improve the extraction rates in the Aeropress by following the advice of the inventor, Alan Adler. He advises to do an espresso grind and brew at a lower temperature, about 80C (176F). Another thing to consider is the ergonomics of each device. The Aeropress is easy to use and clean, which makes for a more enjoyable experience overall. I think the novelty of this Tricolate will wear off pretty quickly.

It seems to matter a LOT to me. I dechaffed coffee for the first time yesterday and the difference it made blew my mind. There is also a much faster way to dechaff. Grind your beans, and then step outside. Blow softly on the beans and any chaff on the top will quickly fly up and go everywhere. Toss the beans a few times and repeat until you can't see any more chaff. Once you get a routine going, you can remove almost all the chaff in just a couple of minutes. I expect I won't always want to do this process, but if I have the time and the motivation I am absolutely going to do it. I tested this technique again on 4 different cups of coffee this morning, and even my wife (who is not a coffee afficianado like me) could tell the difference.

I've been using the same version of Tricolate (v5) for about 5 months now. I found that I get better results with several things in mind. 1. go for 1:10 to 1:12 ratio. you usually don't get good results with a high extraction ratio unless you use really high-quality beans. and high ratio extraction usually results in astringent cups due to too long brewing time. you'll get better results with a total brewing time between 2:30 to 5:00, depending on the quality and roasting level of the coffee you use. (darker the shorter) 2. make sure to level the coffee bed as much as possible. 3. wwdt(wet weiss distribution) makes the final cup more even. my recipe for medium roasted Guatemalan SHB washed is like this. 20g of coffee, grind just a little bit finer than v60. 200g of water at 88 celsius. 00:00 - 00:45 *slowly* pour 40g to bloom 00:45 - 03:00 pour 160g then wwdt. keep the lid open after the pour 03:00 finish, add 40g ~ 100g of water to your preference. you intentionally add the water to the evenly extracted, no-bypassed result, so you can control the level of dilution that happens unintentionally in v60 and other drippers with bypass. resulting in the same ratio of v60, but more concentrated cups from Tricolate.

    • @TheCoffeeChannel
      @TheCoffeeChannel Před rokem

That's interesting. I found after recording this that grinding really fine (finer than in the video) and using a fairly low ratio of coffee to water (1:20) gave really interesting results. I am using an EK, though and a high extraction water.

Very good video, thanks. Does the lower quantity of coffee used in the pods (5g), mean that it is less caffeinated than an equivalent weighted (25-30g) drink made using an espresso machine, from 12-15g coffee? Cheers

Thanks!. Yes - there will be considerably less caffeine in a pod in comparison with a double espresso made with the same beans, purely due to the weight difference. Many of the pods have a very high extraction ratio, which may result in more caffeine being extracted per gram of coffee, but this is negated by the smaller size of shot.

Great video! This is the first time I've ever heard of specialty coffee for Nespresso machines. Sadly these brands aren't sold in the Netherlands where I'm from. What I'm wondering is if there are any specialty coffee brands that sell in the Netherlands (or at least are based in the EU so I don't have to pay all kinds of import taxes etc.). I'd love to hear from you or anyone that knows!

HI, You can try The Barn - based in Berlin.

Thanks for the quick response! Great suggestion as well, but sadly they charge a huge amount for shipping unless u buy in very large quantities. I'd be happy to hear about any other places u know about though :). In the meantime I've found two other places that sell specialty coffee, one in the Netherlands near me called Boot Koffie and one in Belgium called Godin Coffee Roastery. The one in Belgium charges a low amount for shipping and has a lot of specialty coffee options, even for Nespresso machines. To me they seem like two very good options to try. I'd love to hear what u think! Cheers

@@yber15 We can get hold of Colonna pods and ship them to you, but you'd have the same issue with shipping costs.

The shipping cost is a real bummer, but I appreciate the offer! Luckily I found a few more places in the Netherlands that sell specialty Nespresso coffee. Thanks for the help though :)

I saw a comment on Home-Barista saying that the grinder is a Gaggia Sirio.

Thanks! That certainly looks like the correct grinder, although there's virtually no information available about it online.

I know this video was uploaded a long time ago but it'd be nice if you linked the products or websites in the description not typing into a URL bar is a big deal but it'd be nice to link the stuff you're talking about in the description
