    Every time I watch anything Dandy’s related Anton fan boys pop up in the comments to completely dismiss the music that the DW’s make and try to pretend the DW’s have fallen off the Earth and no one cares about them. Could you BE an a bigger gatekeeper Chad ??Sorry Anton worshippers BJM does their thing and so do the DW’s. They both kick ass and enjoy a large and loyal fan base. That kind of pretentious scenester attitude is exactly why I never try to keep with up what’s “ cool “ It’s the opposite of real creativity and the punk ethos that makes real subcultures so fun.

    Oddly, I thought that the message of Dig! was the opposite of what Zia says here. I thought that the Dandy's - by standing in contrast Newcombe - were the heroes of the doc. In my opinion, they came off as both the better band AND the more responsible (which is to say, less self-centered) of the two acts. I found myself wondering throughout the whole thing why everyone in it kept deferring to Newcombe's "genius." If anything, I thought it was the story of a) someone who had potential, and who could have been a genius if he wasn't both convinced of his own genius himself and afraid of his own success, and b) the better band that ultimately outgrew him and left him behind.

    Actually the Dandys came off in the doc as the functional band as opposed to the BJM dysfunction, that much was obvious, the worst the Dandy's had to deal with was Courtney's fragile ego. Other than that Zia's wrong about that not being clear. It was just overshadowed a bit by the BJM drama.

    I've watched DIG a bunch of times, and I have to disagree with Zia's interpretation of the message. Sure, the BJM wrote some great songs, but the success arc of the Dandies was clearly evident by the end of the film, whereas Anton was left struggling in obscurity. I don't think the film did anything to glorify Anton or his lifestyle. That being said, I love both bands. I saw the Dandies about a decade ago and Zia gave me a hug after the show. Best night ever.

    'Dig' was a riveting and sometimes sad behind the scenes look at the dynamics of two young bands trying to make it in the cutthroat and disingenuous music biz and how they dealt with the chew em up and spit em out world of record company's. But, I disagree with Mia's reaction to the doc...the Dandy's come across as far more responsible and mature than BJJM, especially Anton, who comes across as a talented yet self-indulgent and self-destructive 'Spinal Tap' type A-hole. On a happy note, I'm glad to see that both bands survived the R&R lifestyle and are still performing to this day...good for them...Rock On!

  • @cmcgarry007
    @cmcgarry007 Před 10 měsíci

    My take on Dig! was almost the opposite of Zia's. I didn't think the film glorified Anton's disfunction, or portrayed him as any more legit an artist because of it. I thought the film showed two bands starting off as relative equals in talent, with one band succeeding and the other band "failing" because of that disfunction, with some luck involved because the Dandys benefitted from a television commercial and got off easy on the drugs. Ironically, the film has since tied the bands together in such a way that they are, once again, relatively equal in popularity on the road (though probably not in royalties).

    I I initially loved Dig- and introduced me to BJM and to a lesser extent the dandy’s (sorry dandies) what bothers me most is what she said about it not being totally realistic- also- how would you like to be filmed for 7 years by a trusted filmmaker- and the she uses mostly the worst stuff she can find - tho she says it could have been so much worse- Not for anton at the time- he brushes it off but he still talks about it - said once the film made him feel like a “cockroach “ in terms of personal hygiene and appearance- But the worst thing is that the film leaves watcher with impression that that was the end of BJM/ they probably faded awayX and of course anton MUST be dead- he went through a rough patch with alcohol and drug to self medicate his mental illness- as a soon as he began a new treatment in Berlin, he put the bottle down with no outside support that I’m aware of- and this is highly unusual for a true alcoholic- anyway, my theory is that he never had the disease of addiction in the first place - sure he partied hard- but the party was long gone by 2009 and he knew it. So Anton actually has never been more popular- or more relevant, Imo- It’s too bad some viewers will think he ended up a music casualty- That said, the film exposed him and the dandy’s- so it was a double edged sword Today I don’t like the movie and it’s great that there are now many BJM fans who’s first exposure WAS mot “Dig” - and they will probably love it too- Saw BJM last year and they only played two old songs- the ew ones Rock so hard and make you want to cry

    I thought it was a captivating doc. Would be really interesting to do something similar based on the new confines/models/opportunities for current artists. I loved that aspect of DIG the most -- there is a lot of great music out there for audiences but not everyone is going to break big or maybe they will and its due to something no one would have ever expected (which I think BJM being included in intro to Boardwalk Empire which then led to thousands of rolling stones fans to say wow this band is pretty cool might classify as "unexpected")

    I like the documentary and I especially liked it when I watched it. But now that I watch it later, I do notice that info timoner took some shortcuts. The narration is kind of cringe at times, with these hyperbolic oversimplified utterances. Which wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't have one of the subjects of the films doing the narration. And the timeline is very confusing because they basically stop showing the Brian jonestown massacre after a couple years. Yet they follow the dandy warhols into the turn of the century and beyond.

      Well no, she specifically said they were implying that they weren't real artists because they weren't dysfunctional enough. It was basically making an oversimplified comparison of BJM, the people that couldn't get their s*** together, versus the dandies, who were almost too corporate and boring. Her complaint as far as I could tell was not that the dandies were portrayed as dysfunctional but that they were being portrayed as boring because they weren't dysfunctional enough. But either way it was about dysfunction just on which side of the dysfunctional tracks you were on

    lol Zia seems like a massive hater. Her complaining about the doc and the drugs. Her point about "It's about the more fucked up you get, makes you a more legit artist it's not the case" What she REALLY said was "I hated the Doc because it made the BJM bigger than we are and have a legacy forever." People love BJM and Anton still makes great music. The Dandies? Well.....They're just "Passe" "Oh I'm doing good, I gotta be crazy because THE PRESIDENT TRIGGERED ME! By the way, I'm an open liberal parent! Anyways, I know you didn't ask about politics but I HAD to toss that out there. Now let me tell you why the doc sucked, it showed the world how good BJM was and now today they're bigger than we ever were. I wish we still had good songs. Remember the whoo hooo hoooo song?" Just listening her change the convo to politics a few times just makes me cringe. The worst person to have at a dinner party. I'm sure she wouldn't create ANY drama or act high and mighty lol.
