    The main impact of this doco was to launch BJM on the wider world. Anton is still making great music. The stuff he's done with Tess Parks is phenomenal. Can't think of anything any notable any of the Dandys have done recently.

    • @JacksonPolyp
      @JacksonPolyp Před 3 lety +32

      This is exactly right. I'm surprised she thinks the doc could have made the Dandys look worse...because it makes them look pretty bad. And the prediction of the Dandys guitarist at the end of the film, something along the lines of "maybe everyone will forget about us but still be listening to BJM records decades from now," turned out to be very true.

    • @superserioes

      I love the Dandys, they’re cool and fun and likeable. But without any question Anton‘s more troubled life has made him a much deeper and artistically more relevant artist. That still doesn’t mean that drugs make you more interesting. But I know about myself and many other people that the BJM substantially helped us through difficult times of our lives. And I don’t believe that as many people say that about the Dandys.

    My take on Dig! was almost the opposite of Zia's. I didn't think the film glorified Anton's disfunction, or portrayed him as any more legit an artist because of it. I thought the film showed two bands starting off as relative equals in talent, with one band succeeding and the other band "failing" because of that disfunction, with some luck involved because the Dandys benefitted from a television commercial and got off easy on the drugs. Ironically, the film has since tied the bands together in such a way that they are, once again, relatively equal in popularity on the road (though probably not in royalties).

    Oddly, I thought that the message of Dig! was the opposite of what Zia says here. I thought that the Dandy's - by standing in contrast Newcombe - were the heroes of the doc. In my opinion, they came off as both the better band AND the more responsible (which is to say, less self-centered) of the two acts. I found myself wondering throughout the whole thing why everyone in it kept deferring to Newcombe's "genius." If anything, I thought it was the story of a) someone who had potential, and who could have been a genius if he wasn't both convinced of his own genius himself and afraid of his own success, and b) the better band that ultimately outgrew him and left him behind.

The narration is kind of cringe at times, with these hyperbolic oversimplified utterances. Which wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't have one of the subjects of the films doing the narration.
    And the timeline is very confusing because they basically stop showing the Brian jonestown massacre after a couple years. Yet they follow the dandy warhols into the turn of the century and beyond.

    'Dig' was a riveting and sometimes sad behind the scenes look at the dynamics of two young bands trying to make it in the cutthroat and disingenuous music biz and how they dealt with the chew em up and spit em out world of record company's. But, I disagree with Mia's reaction to the doc...the Dandy's come across as far more responsible and mature than BJJM, especially Anton, who comes across as a talented yet self-indulgent and self-destructive 'Spinal Tap' type A-hole. On a happy note, I'm glad to see that both bands survived the R&R lifestyle and are still performing to this day...good for them...Rock On!

  • @jgwire
    @jgwire Před rokem

    I I initially loved Dig- and introduced me to BJM and to a lesser extent the dandy’s (sorry dandies) what bothers me most is what she said about it not being totally realistic- also- how would you like to be filmed for 7 years by a trusted filmmaker- and the she uses mostly the worst stuff she can find - tho she says it could have been so much worse-
    Not for anton at the time- he brushes it off but he still talks about it - said once the film made him feel like a “cockroach “ in terms of personal hygiene and appearance-
    But the worst thing is that the film leaves watcher with impression that that was the end of BJM/ they probably faded awayX and of course anton MUST be dead- he went through a rough patch with alcohol and drug to self medicate his mental illness- as a soon as he began a new treatment in Berlin, he put the bottle down with no outside support that I’m aware of- and this is highly unusual for a true alcoholic- anyway, my theory is that he never had the disease of addiction in the first place - sure he partied hard- but the party was long gone by 2009 and he knew it.
    So Anton actually has never been more popular- or more relevant, Imo-
    It’s too bad some viewers will think he ended up a music casualty-
    That said, the film exposed him and the dandy’s- so it was a double edged sword
    Today I don’t like the movie and it’s great that there are now many BJM fans who’s first exposure WAS mot “Dig” - and they will probably love it too-
    Saw BJM last year and they only played two old songs- the ew ones Rock so hard and make you want to cry

    I find it hilarious that everyone can still listen to antons music w.o remembering where it comes from. Would 100% of the time rather listen to the progenators of the bjm sound as opposed to bjm themselves because of the distraction. Anton drew from the greatest bands ever to make himself some 'great' music. But Anton is not Lou Reed nor is he on the selfawareness level of spaceman 3. I will listen to these bands before listening to antons music any day. The quote that bjm is the VU of the 90s is still a hilarious observation considering that 30 years later all they could muster was alot of VU/dylan/stones worship. With this said anton is still an extremely successful musician, i just don't understand after listening to him say so much stupid shit why it would seem his Lyrica have any meaning

    Her being a 'liberal' is quite off-putting. And Dig! wasn't all about the Dandy's or Zia but much more about alone at the top mad genius Anton Newcombe. I'm sure Courtney Taylor vows for that.

      Firstly, she said she was a ‘liberal parent’. Liberal, as an adjective for the type of parent she is-not how she votes!
      Lastly, how could you ever think she’d be anything but politically liberal??

      Liberal is a vague term. I have very left wing politics and I am critical of contemporary liberalism from the left. Like Bernie Sanders and Lula do not have the same ideology as Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden or the hedge funds that support third way..
      But either way, in this case I'm pretty sure she was referring to her parenting, not necessarily her political ideology.
      But a huge issue we have in this country is conservatives make no distinction between liberals and the left. As if people that were explicitly anti-capitalist, are on the same side as the HMOs that fund the Biden campaign?
      I'm sorry but this culture war stuff is not actually at the hub of the ideological struggle. The left wants economic justice primarily, and partisan Democrats in Washington and in the rich suburbs, don't even support a truly public single-payer healthcare.
      Biden's healthcare plan are to the right of netanyahu and every conservative government in the Oecd.
      But if you listen to Tim pool, you would think that anyone that isn't a movement conservative, is some part of some broadly defined woke liberal agenda.
      It's much more complicated than that
