Man, this is a tight band. Difficult chart but played very cleanly. Excellent job!
Beautifully done! I love the tempo these guys played at, perfect to give attention to all the small nuances without sacrificing the great feel. I find it interesting how Thad scores for two sopranos here, it gives the sax section a super bright, sharp, almost harsh quality. The sax soli sounded incredible as well!!
HELL yeah. Great job!
Austin on drums killing it! WTG go young man. Another awesome CWU recording of a timeless Kenton monster chart! WTG Chris.
Brilliant!
Outstanding! Great Drum arrangement.
Wow!!! Tight! I love how you all were in awe of each other and feeling each other's vibe. Amazing group and considering this video was posted 10 years ago I am sure some fantastic memories were made. What a performance!!!
Amazing to hear dynamics, attacks, and releases done impeccably. Well done! That said, the lead trumpet part is a lot more challenging to play than I saw it performed in this gig. Hopefully he'll come around in time. All around, the solos were fantastic, the band's tutti sections were tight, and I ENJOYED hearing this performance.
Channel One! 1986 DCI World Champs, The Blue Devils! Well done performance!
Madison Scouts 1995!
Most cool.
The band is swinging, and hats off to the first trumpet for nailing one of the hardest lead trumpet parts ever. Well done.
❤
Very Jobim :)
Really nice!
I want to tell you You really played it!! Bravo for your Director to choose this piece ..what a wonderful sound...Bobby S would be proud of You!! and your band !! Metheny and Curnow would be smiling now! John Entzi Leicester, NC
Best performance of this tune I've ever heard,!!
One word for the band Wow!!)
Very nice performance. Beautiful sax special, but too many solos !
Double-time swing!
Great job folks!
Butch, Duffy, Louie, and Buddy are all smiling
WOW! Bravo!
Each time i hear this song, it's always has different solos
Jazz
yeah man, Buddy would be so proud of you young players! Great interpretation of one of Buddy’s classic charts from the 60’s and remained in his book until he passed…
Love to see ladies representing on drums and bass trombone. Fantastic performance. Bob Curnow arrangement?
GREAT! BR Smiling!!
The drummer is spot on!
I can tell when a clarinet player is trying to “play” the alto or any saxophone to begin with 💀
I can’t believe the drummer is reading the chart - he should have the arrangement memorized like every other Buddy Rich fan. Drums kind of hollow sounding, but the tenor sax player sounds like a cross between Don Mensa and Steve Marcus with great tone.
Wow - that was great!!
Im a drummer and have seen buddy perform this live, many times. Very impressed by this young drummer...
Damn!!! What a band!!!
DAAAYUMMM
Clássico de Buddy Rich que impõe muita pressão sobre os universitários. Mas é sempre bom ouvi-lo. Obrigado!
Trumpet solo was very good. This young guy move into the professional status? Sure qualified.
3:04 My life flashed before my eyes
Kicking band. Chris did a great job while at CWU.
Alto 2 was like a dry martini while lead alto was like a fireball double shot lol what amazing talent in this section
EXCELLENT !
Musicianship is great, but too fast!!
This is the single best piece of music ever produced from a school quite possibly ever
That's really clean. Nice.
Ok, Who's up for a transcription of Alto mans solo?
Tough task. Hard to follow Buddy Rich.
Is lead alto playing on a c*????
Oh man, this was so long ago lol I think it was an F tip or something like that. But an S80 yeah
Man that trumpet solo was like the perfect antithesis to the sax solo before. It was like watching opposite but equal energies collide like yin and Yang or black and white. Damn you guys killed, award winning performances from each and every single one of you
OK, I actually SAW Buddy Rich and his Big Band play this song live. The Gold Standard of live Big Bands. It was their song. Watching Buddy, Steve Marcus, and the rest of the band play this song was jaw dropping. So believe me when I say, this is a great performance of this song. Great arrangement, and the band is spot on. REALLY good. I suspect Buddy would have approved with a smile. I KNOW Steve Marcus would have been thrilled with this. I hope most of these young musicians are still playing Jazz today. We need more Big Band music.
Super!
Way to go. Nice solo.
