What's Your Reason?

Many people may wonder why someone would venture out into the wilderness and put themselves through the struggles of a survival challenge. Some might do it because our society lacks a rite of passage and this is their substitute. Some might do it because they do not wish to take for granted the simple things in life, like turning on a faucet for fresh water or going to the refrigerator for food...

Unless you are providing medical care to a group of people, you have way too big a kit. All people in the back country should have their own small first aid kit in their backpack. You don't need all of the duplicate and diagnostic stuff. Your not going to have a mass casualty situation, so one or two of everything should be sufficient.

I bought some nice Dental rounds. Melted some Gulf wax and dipped the dental rounds into the molten wax. Dental rounds are soft. After being dipped (not allowed to soak) and being allowed to cool and set the result is very hard fire starters. Too hard to easily bend or fluff up with the fingers. I next tried a mixture of 50/50 gulf wax and soft beeswax toilet bowl ring. Results are better. Not what I want but better. Going to try wax and PJ next. Not expecting anything great. I have something else in mind too. If it works I'll give you a holler.

Please, do not take your dog out into the desert with you! What is the point ? Needs extra water you must carry, cactus thorns, snakes, bees, ,scorpions, other animals, sharp rocks, over heating, plus many other dangers that you need to watch for along with taking care of yourself. Just because it wants to be with you always, sometimes it really shouldn’t. Ask every park ranger what they say about doing this !😊

In Colorado you don't need to go to the dessert for hot, dry, cactus and snakes. We got it all right here. Plus red racers, black widows and brown recluse fuzzies as well as scorpions. And no you will not find water even in the mountains. Colorado in reality is a high mountain dessert. Lots of ways to die here even if your not trying.

I usually carry at least one 100' section of paracord with me. I sore it on either plastic spoolers made for the purpose or on ones I male out of 1"× 1/4" pieces of wood and two dowel rods. You can make these as big or small as you need. This keeps the longer length manageable and keeps it from tangling. For shorter lengths I tie a bowline inone end that I put ober my thumb, then wrap it like the Army does their parchute lines, in a figure 8 over your finger and thumb, then wrap it with about 6 ft of cord and secure it by wrapping the tag end 4 or 5 times around a loosened loop and pulling tight. When I need some cordage I simply pull on the bowline and it comes out tangle free without unwrapping it. I also sometimes use smaller plastic spoolers that hols up to 50'. These allow for rhe cord to be stored in a flat coil and more easily stowed and take up less space plus they have holes in the handles that you can run a carabiner through or tie off with a piece of cord to the outside of your pack.

I have a tube that will take 2x18650 batteries and I wrap about 10m paracord around that in an orderly fashion which works well for me when stored in a small 'stuff sack'. I can get a battery out of the tube easily enough and just have to pull the loop I've made in the end of the paracord and it unrolls nicely. I also keep a spool 125' of #100 cordage, Atwood mini-trd that is AWESOME for being out in the woods. This stuff can be used for all manner of things that you wouldnt want to use paracord for but is too much for trip wire or something like that.
