Travelling FIRST CLASS on Kenya's SGR | is it worth it?
Travelling from Nairobi to our favourite coastal town of Watamu can be expensive when flights can set you back over $300 USD
Although flying from Nairobi to Malindi is much quicker we decided to try the cheaper alternative, and take the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) from Nairobi to Mombasa, then a 2.5 hour shuttle from Mombasa to Watamu.
This 6 hour journey passes through the stunning Tsavo National Park and the chance to see wild elephant is high!
But was it worth it?..
How to book SGR:
Tickets can be booked directly with metickets.krc.co.ke/ or with a Big Time Ultimate Transfers (+254 726 779471)
Train Times:
The express train from Nairobi to Mombasa departs every day at 15:00 & 22:00
The inter-county train from Nairobi to Mombasa departs every day at 08:00
Train ticket prices:
First class - 4,500 KES per person
Second class - 1,500 KES per person

SGR is cheaper compared to trains in UK
Oh that's for sure. Trains in the UK are a joke! SGR was great đ
I Love your video's
Thank you đ
Wow â€
â€ïž
Thankyou
Youâre welcome đ
Do you know whether it's possible to book the shuttle from the Mombasa station to south coast in advance? Thanks.
There are lots of guys with signs outside the terminus when you arrive. I'm sure you could just approach one and get a ride. We prefer to book in advance though
You must always speak up your mind and let them know you're not comfortable with how the person is driving.
It's true. But nobody else seems to think his driving was a problem đ
@@WhereNextFamily Don't wait for someone else to notice as you will have prevented an accident occurring in the first place. Speak up and Don't be afraid.
Please always speak up no matter what. Coz your life is in the driver's hands
It's true đ
Yep, we speak up even in matatus with all the other passengers on board. Some drivers are pretty reckless.
Safer to fly especially the roads after the rains must be atrocious, and duelling work on the MSA - MLD highway means the journey isnt pleasant. My dad always drove us during school holidays on NRB - MSA route and I ended up doing a few trips myself, it can be dangerous if you're lulled into speeding but if you stick to 80-100kph and set off 4AM it's a thoroughly challenging and rewarding drive
Yes agreed if going to Watamu I'd definitely fly in future, however going between Nairobi and Mombasa I think the train is a very good option.
Very nice experience! đ
Thanks. We enjoyed it đ
That was a very nice video.
Thank you đ
Very bad seats on those trains, and quite expensive compared to buses
Personally I disagree on the comfort side. I found it very comfortable, and lots of space to love around that you don't get on a bus. It's also much much safer than taking the bus. I know the train is not within everyone's budget, so of course in that instance then the bus is the obvious choice, but personally I would pick the train over the bus 10 times out of 10
Tanzania's SRG fast train came into operation last week.. it's a little more luxurious than the one in Kenya.
Oh I see you're trying to stir the pot here in the comments đ You're about have the 254 army coming at you đ But in all seriousness I didn't know about the Tanzanian one. Will have to try when we next cross the border đ
please, relax and quietly return to your corner
But it covers a smaller distance though...
You're right, but there are better trains everywhere. đđđ
As of yesterday what you experienced is now business class. They are bringing in real first class coaches with one seat per window with recliner seats, reading lights e.t.c in a few weeks time. The new coaches will be exactly what you would experience in a first class section in a plane. So I guess you will need to do part two of this first class video.
Interesting! We'll keep an eye out, and start saving up for the inevitable high prices đ
hehehe.... I love your jokes
Coz I like you guys, I didn't skip the ads.

Perfect editing. You can opt for self drive taxi pay for a day or 2.
Thanks đ Self drive/rental is an option if you're only going for a couple of days. We go for longer periods of time and like to work while we travel as well. The highway is also notorious for accidents đ
â@@WhereNextFamily OK.
đ
đ
Great review Adam I would feel the same about the shuttle bus đ«Ł so just to confirm you prebook SGR online before going to the ticket counter in the terminal? I reckon the SGR is good if youâre headed to Diani but Watamu itâs probably better just to fly đ
Thank you đ yeah sometimes you get a responsible driver but unfortunately a lot of the time these guys are on the clock and they do this route so often that they go into autopilot. Yes, you book your tickets online, then collect at the station on the day (give yourself an hour before your train). Tickets sell out so I wouldn't advise trying to buy on the day.
@@WhereNextFamilygreat thanks dude đ
Few years back the Al shabab terrorist real caused havoc in Kenya especially at the coastal area & Nairobi, that is the reason security is very tight at the station.
I actually think it's great that security is tight. Makes you feel much safer
Someone has to solve the Great Chapati Mystery. How does that magnificent flat dough keep appearing on your plates? Check the internet and it seems the threat of terrorism is rearing it's ugly head again in Africa so hence the security checks. Be safe Where Next Family.
đ its a secret. Really our suitcases are just full of chapatis. We don't own anything else, just cameras and chapatis đ

Where did you rent the car
There's a place in Watamu called Watamu Offroad
How cool is that? I just watched this video and I thought I remember that guy and this lady from our Namibia Roadtrip... If you have been to the Mowani Campsite from 4th to 5th of October, then we were your neighbours 10:32 on the left side đ€© We also would have loved to stay there at least one more night.
Oh that's so awesome đ It really was a beautiful place â€ïž
Hey my child is 3 years 1 month Old and she is less than 100 cm in height , do i need to buy ticket for her , if yes then how to book it via d ticket thailand website for 1st class coach , as soon as i select 3 persons it gives error as not sufficient seats and i am not able to book
I'd suggest reaching out to Bangkok Buddy tour operators. They are who we booked through and our daughter paid 50% and was allowed to stay with us. The main booking website for the rail was complicated so for us it made sense to go through an operator
@@WhereNextFamily thanks for the info , much appreciated

Thanks for the kind comment. We do try (where possible) to add a little value for people so I'm glad you appreciated it â€ïž
Any thoughts for a first time trip on staying closer to town and traveling out to kobe / lichthaus for day hangs vs doing the reverse?
The distance between the center of Watamu and Kobe/Lichthaus is only about 5km or 300 shillings on a boda boda, so I wouldn't worry too much about where you stay. Watamu has lots of beaches to choose from so if you want to be closer to the hustle and bustle, then staying in town is a good option
Keep it up PYRING đâïžđ«Ą
Always!
Do you always stay in Hotels in Kenya or do you ever stay in airbnbs at all?
We stay in both. Often we film hotels because they invite us to check them out, but if we go to Nairobi for a normal weekend we would likely stay in an Airbnb
@@WhereNextFamily Thanks! I am bringing my family to Kenya/Tanzania for 6 weeks and I like a mix of hotels and airbnbs. That helps me in my planning.
