Brilliant scene. He's looking out the window possibly not a thought about drinking whatsoever and suddenly the noise of the fridge in a split second propels him into a compulsion to have a drink. One moment your okay and the next your locked into a compulsion that you can't escape. Things can change that quickly and instantaneously when in active addiction.

His mistake was looking in that fridge. If he had just given himself a minute to think about what he needed to focus on (the trial), he could’ve put his curiosity away and went to sleep sober. But as soon as he saw all that alcohol, it was over. True alcoholics know the helplessness of that situation. The temptation is impossible to resist.
