Cars Out of Bike Lanes - Do as I say, not as I do
We're back! And with no shortage of cars blocking the bike lanes on Valencia St. We encountered nearly 20 vehicles in the bike lanes during our short 1.5 hour ride.

This problem could be partially solved by having street parking next to the moving cars and the bike lane to the right of the parked cars, between the parked cars and the sidewalk (install some concrete bollards in between them). This would also solve the issue of the danger from cyclists getting doored by drivers opening their doors without looking. But I love you persistent but polite you guys are, even when they don't deserve it. Keep it up!

I tend to go more incognito when I report drivers. I just take a picture and call the parking authority. Then, I leave the scene because I don't feel like potentially getting into an argument with a Philly driver :/ .

Being fat, lazy, and selfish are not valid excuses to park in a cycle-lane. Car-drivers complain about Cyclists being on the road, but then they block the designated bicycle lane.

In UK we have bus lanes and these are filmed and the amount if revenue the council make from fines is ridiculous into the high £1000s a year and car drivers moan so they should be a similar thing in cycle lanes over here ( U.K.) and USA

  • @kitchencarvings4621

If you really want to be effective, look up their address from the license plate and go to their house and stand on the public easement or sidewalk with a camera on a tripod and do a news report following up on the incident. This is totally legal and protected by the first amendment and if they come out ask them to comment on the incident, you know, were you the driver? Why did you park in the bike lane? Do you know that it is unsafe and illegal? Do you do this often? How do you feel about cyclists using the roads? There's nothing they or the police can do to stop this and then publish it to youtube. Become journalists and follow up. Find out all the public information you can about the house and the vehicle and report it to the public and film it right in front of their house or business. This would be especially effective with commercial vehicles. Go to the business and stand out front narrating and when they come out ask them if they are aware that their employees are violating the law in the course of their jobs. Show a clip of the incident while you are interviewing them. They most likely won't answer and that makes them look guilty. My "wife was having a baby" would be a legitimate reason for parking. I "needed to get my takeout order" is not. It would be a different take on the whole first amendment audit craze. Go stand in front of the police station and report on incidents of the police blocking the bike lane and when they come out to confront you, as they will, interview them and then publish it along with contact information for the department. Go inside and do a public information request and find out who was driving that car that day and get their discipline records and publish that along with their picture and their yearly salary. Don't think it would be effective? Some auditor channels have over a half million subscribers and some are so popular that they get approached by fans every time they do an audit anywhere in the country. Amagansett Press is a great example of this. Almost every video now they get approached by their fans and they go all over the country doing audits. That would be a lot more effective than banging pots. You could be arrested for disorderly conduct doing that.

  • @kitchencarvings4621

What might be effective is to take out a full-page ad once a month in the local newspaper with pictures of all these jerks and a link to the video of them kind of like the police blotter that is published in the paper. There's no expectation of privacy in public and it's legal to film people and their actions in public and publish it.

  • @kitchencarvings4621

I admire what they are doing but it's a hopeless battle. It does make for interesting footage though. Entitled drivers will not care and will continue to park in bike lanes. The easy way to fix this is to have a website where people can upload videos to the police along with license plates and faces so the police can send them a fine in the mail. If they don't pay it they have to appear in court.

While it is great what you're doing, I do have to wonder what brainlets thought the horizontal stripes on the bike lane were a good idea. They basically whisper "PARK HERE". Two more parts of the equation are missing: 1) actual protected bike lanes that are not a painted line on the road between high speed traffic and the door zone of parked cars, and 2) actual enforcement so that people learn to respect the painted bike gutters that really can't be replaced by proper bike infrastructure. Keep up the good job though.

  • @TruthHurtsFAFO

A valve stem remover would fix the problem. Takes a few seconds and causes no damage to the vehicle. You could easily hit the rear passenger tire before the driver cleared the front seat.

This came up .. 6 years later and it's still the same. Is it actually OK to show the plates of the offenders ( vs it being a 'privacy violation' because now everyone knows/could know who they are ) ? I so wish they could get rid of some of that on-street parking also, less chance of getting hit by a door.

  • @juancarlosdurbanormant1893

0:33 In Belgium that's 3 separate fines if a police officer really wants to get a message through. One for parking in the wrong place, one for endangering weak road users, and one for wrongful use of the 4 emergency blinker lights. But you bet if a police car or bike passed these people here, they'd all get at least a severe warning, And at worst a serious fine and maybe even a revoked licence for repeat offenders. The penalty for parking in a bike lane here is 110 to 1375 euro and a possible revoked licence for 5 days to 8 YEARS. You bet this phenomenon has gotten extremely rare here...

I don't have it in me to tell people how to live their lives when riding my bike. Not worth my time. I will always just go around the damn car and you, and make sure that I look both ways so as to not get hit and hold up the flow of traffic behind me. My hometown, San Francisco, has become more violent In the last 2 years that you can never know who's liable to just snap and potentially hurt you for telling them to move their car. Just sayin'! Just let people be and stop obstructing my bike lane, whether you're in a car or not. Just go around, you'll get there. Ride safe!

I live in UK. I visited SF with a bike several times in the noughties and saw many signs saying “cars parked in the bike lane will be towed” - for example along the road that extends the Embarcadero - I thought they were everywhere. Thank you for doing this work (on behalf of cyclists all over the world). I also saw cops on bikes - cant you get these guys also supporting your case ? By the way, its the same everywhere - and I question the value of on-road painted lines given the dooring problem and the evidence that drivers pass cyclists closer where there are painted cycle lanes and also bully cyclists for not being in those lanes. Keep up the good work.
