    As an avid SF cyclist, I applaud you. Our city has too many drivers that are terribly inconsiderate to cyclists, and are unaware of the rules and regulations that are in place to help keep cyclists safe.
    I cannot believe how patient and calm you are. As you can see from my cycling videos, I don't have much patience for unsafe drivers.
    I do have a question though - what does the law say about cars stopped in the bike lane for passenger loading/unloading? What about trucks? I see trucks and Uber/Lyfts stopped in the bike lane the most - it's just the thing that everyone does here in SF, but I'd like to know more about what they are required to do.

      +Agent X85B Thank you - and I hope you'll join on a ride sometime. It'll be better in a team/group to talk with drivers and we can give each other support to keep the nerves down. Here's our group: bit.ly/BikesNotCars.
      I remember seeing your video from last February - crazy, but I'm sure so many cyclists here have similar experiences. How did that situation play out? I hope the driver was charged with something.
      As for the legal question, my understanding is that registered city taxis may stop in bike lanes ONLY to pick up or drop off disabled or elderly passengers. No other vehicles may ever stop in a bike lane at any time (except emergency vehicles, of course). Some think that commercial vehicles can stop in bike lanes to load/unload, but that's not true. They just get away with it because they rarely get ticketed and even if they do, it's a drop in the bucket for a big company.

    1:18. Perfect example. There's an entrance right there that they could block temporarily. But instead they feel more comfortable blocking bike lanes and blocking actual cyclists than potentially blocking a car that might hypothetically show up and maybe try to get into the entrance.

    Been waiting for somebody to do this since obviously the City won't do anything. Been especially inspired by the whole Stop a Douchebag movement in Russia, so glad to see something like this here in SF where bicyclists are treated as second-class citizens by motorists and the City.

  • @rhyno6
    @rhyno6 Před 8 lety +6

    I'm a cyclist and I completely agree with getting cars and trucks out of bike lanes. But I have had a lot of difficulty with getting commercial vehicles out of the bike lanes. It's considered part of their business to be in the street temporarily and everyone is expected to go around them. The theory is that you will go around them and then cars will go around you (or wait, technically). My city even has a law that says specifically that a commercial vehicle can legally block any lane (driving, bike, sidewalk, etc) for up to 30 minutes. So I usually don't get a response of it's my first call. Just keep that in mind to maybe save some stress on your part.

    Gather all your biking friends, collect a bunch of old, discarded bikes and park them in the car lane.
    When the police order you to move them, do so. To the next street.
    If you can make sure you get plenty of media attention, maybe eventually the penny will drop.
    At least you'll get some excellent footage.

  • @TheCreator97

    in greece we don't have as many bike lanes as you do but it's still a problem because drivers don't even pay attention to cyclists,thus causing a lot of accidents everyday

    This came up .. 6 years later and it's still the same. Is it actually OK to show the plates of the offenders ( vs it being a 'privacy violation' because now everyone knows/could know who they are ) ? I so wish they could get rid of some of that on-street parking also, less chance of getting hit by a door.

  • @etansivad
    @etansivad Před 8 lety +1

    You know... since you're inspired by Stop A Douchebag, you should take their other idea. Make a sticker (Or a magnet that can be tossed on the car) that reads something to the effect of "I don't care about cyclists and other drivers, I park where I want."
    If someone won't move, or isn't there to move, stick in on their car and keep going. Stickers would go on the glass, magnets on the car.

    • @CarsOutofBikeLanesSF
      @CarsOutofBikeLanesSF  Před 8 lety +1

      +etansivad That would be more effective, but I worry about private property laws in the U.S. - people here take that stuff way too seriously. The police would not be on my side and I would get cited for destruction of property. Also, that may not help improve relations between cyclists and drivers.
      But I wish I could! It looks so satisfying on the StopXam videos.

    • @etansivad
      @etansivad Před 8 lety

      So then do magnets. A magnet can leave a message without scratching the paint or damaging anyone's property. There's already one for cars that almost hit people: petermiller.info/webimages/yellowcard.pdf

  • @youppel
    @youppel Před 8 lety +2

    Well done. But to live up to "Stop a Douchebag" the result should be "Drivers:0" in the end :-)
    I'm afraid, one can't do that alone. You need to have a team at the spot and the police ready to assist if you call them.

    • @CarsOutofBikeLanesSF
      @CarsOutofBikeLanesSF  Před 8 lety +1

      +youppel Totally agree! This video the first call to action and I've already got a small group of San Franciscans ready to help with the next one!
      I wish the police and Traffic Enforcement would be able to come on a moment's notice, but unfortunately they aren't too helpful. That's why I'm doing this in the first place.

    • @CarsOutofBikeLanesSF
      @CarsOutofBikeLanesSF  Před 8 lety +1

      +SonnoMaku I would suggest that dense cities increase the amount of loading zones or that trucks making deliveries block car lanes instead of bike lanes (that's only fair, right?).
      The real solution to all of this is infrastructure changes that support vehicles making deliveries and support and physically protect alternate modes of transit like biking, walking, buses, etc.
