What really gets me going is when they do this right next to an empty parking space (which they then block, as well)
That is maddening, but more likely, the empty space you see now wasn't empty when the offender chose to park in the bike lane.
I predict that the problem will persist until you have your bike lanes raised.

You are correct. We ride to show the city how useless painted bike lanes are and how important is to install real infrastructure. But there is no political will here to make those life-saving changes. So in the short term, we also riding to show the city that enforcement is desperately needed until protected bike lanes are built.
Yes. Have little kerbs between road and cycle lane. Soon put a stop to it. The law states cyclist cannot use pavements unless divided into cycle and pedestrian lane. Motorists don't like cyclists being on the road. Government builds cycle lanes to protect all road users and motorists decide they can park in them 🙄
I had to ride in the middle of very fast traffic because 3 cars were parked in a line blocking the cycle lane and the pavement. Some woman hurled threats and her husband came bouncing out of his garden when I complained. He soon went back in again after he saw I took pictures. I will stay I cycle lanes, motorists stay on roads. You cannot park or block a cycle lane or a cycle filter box. Stay behind the line even if the light is green if there is a jam at the junction. Otherwise you block cyclists from safely navigating and you also block other traffic trying to cross the junction. Accident waiting to happen.
I am amaze how polite you were to these people. Shame it looks like most people were not even sorry and will do it again in the near future.
Every time a motorists screams at me to use the bike lane, I'll just give them a piece of paper with the link of this video on it.
This is my argument to the small minority of motorists who moan at us to use them, when they block 'em!
The best way to do it is just keep pedaling and ram straight into em claiming you didn't see them. They won't do it after several broken Windows and smashed bumpers.

We hear you. Could you please suggest some ideas for other ways to encourage the drivers to leave the bike lane? When we say "leave the bike or we will ____" what do we say and what do we do? We can use stickers because we would get arrested and sued for vandalism and destruction of property.
+Cars Out of Bike Lanes SF I do the same thing you guys do down here in LA. I don't really know if I'm making a difference by getting telling individual drivers to get out of the bike lane. Most of the bike lanes I ride on are in fairly progressive jurisdictions (i.e. Santa Monica, UCLA). So I've had good experiences with the PD who will come out and speak with the driver. I don't know how it is in SF, but I would try to establish a contact with your local PD (LAPD had bike liaisons who deal with anything bike related). That might be more effective than talking to individual drivers.
I'm sure some of these drivers are apologetic and learned their lesson, but most probably don't really give a crap. Which is why I think only getting law enforcement involved would result in progress.
By the way, I read a while back that SF transit busses have cameras that can issue parking citations as the busses drive by. Is that true? Maybe that's one way to get this enforced.
Our PD, unfortunately, has a well-documented anti-cyclist bias, and they are generally so busy on other matters that they do not often respond to calls for parking enforcement (which is the category this falls into). Our Parking Enforcement does take calls, but it takes them 20+ minutes to arrive and by that time the offenders are long gone.
That's why were taking matters into our own hands, and we hope that posting the videos publicly can reach a larger number of people and draw attention to the issue until changes are made. We are slowly making our way and getting the attention of the city and law enforcement.
Yes- MUNI buses do have TOLE cameras, but so far their use is limited to people driving in transit-only lanes and parking in bus stops I believe. But I do know someone who has spoken with SFMTA about possibly expanding the use of those cameras to include other violations like parking in bike lanes.

That's a bummer. I thought SF is fairly progressive when it comes to cycling. I wonder if you can get your local TV stations to do a segment on this. Namely Stanley Roberts who does the "People behaving badly" segment. He has a pretty big following (including myself).
Regardless, you guys should approach the violators in a calm, civil manner. Don't make a scene or escalate the situation (who knows if someone is going to have a weapon). If you encounter someone receptive, then they'll listen to you. But if you encounter someone selfish, I doubt they care to start with. So making a scene about it isn't really going to help the cause.
I'm also a League of American Bicyclist certified instructor. When I teach Traffic Skills classes, I tell people that it's good to be "right", but you don't want to be "dead right". When you guys are hurt, it doesn't do anyone any good. I guess I'm just trying to look out for fellow cyclists.

Our top priority is approaching people in a calm manner and being extremely polite. We also travel in a group and operate in very public places to try and be as safe as possible.
We are tired of people getting hurt and felt like there is no choice but to take matters into our own hands.
A real cycling lane is inaccessible to selfish motorists. Painting the gutter on a road and calling it a cycle lane is for political reasons. Belgium and the Netherlands have proper safe cycling lanes. They use kerbs to protect cyclists.

Completely right. That's part of the problem we're trying to show with these videos. Two cyclists were killed in SF yesterday on streets where a protected bike lane or protected intersection could have saved their lives.
you're only partially right for we do still have cycle lanes that are not segregated from the road, most of those are to be found in city/village centers....

bipedalame I'm not entirely sure that it's fair to say that it's for political reasons, though I suppose one could. I look at many of these bike lane related videos and see city streets (sidewalks included) that are simply too narrow to accommodate a properly isolated bike lane. About the best I could see being done might be what I think is called floating parking spots and putting the bike lane between the parking spots and the sidewalk. But even those can be abused by people who park their cars too much to the right, or trucks or cars who insist on using the bike lanes as loading zones. Or for that matter, I've seen videos (often NYC related ones) where pedestrians insist on walking in the bike lanes.
The reality is that most of these cities' streets/sidewalks were never designed to be wide enough to properly accommodate normal vehicular traffic lanes, parking, and bike lanes, as well as foot traffic.

I picked up a few Airhorns a while ago after dealing with a guy who refused to get out of the bike lane. I just blast the hell out of it now and point till people move. Also got parking enforcement on speed-dial.
As a fellow SF cyclist, I must say that you guys are doing the lord's work here. If I tried to do something like this I'd just end up shouting at everyone like a madman and getting the cops called on me.
The siren is way more effective than a bell, horn, or banging a tin can. Get more of those. 👍

Unfortunately we would get arrested and sued for vandalism and destruction of property, and possibly assaulted by the driver first. Americans are very sensitive about their private property and the police have a documented bias against cyclists here.
But gladly taking other suggestions for things we can do to encourage these drivers to get out of the bike lane quickly!
In US you can get sued for anything really.

0:33 In Belgium that's 3 separate fines if a police officer really wants to get a message through. One for parking in the wrong place, one for endangering weak road users, and one for wrongful use of the 4 emergency blinker lights.
But you bet if a police car or bike passed these people here, they'd all get at least a severe warning, And at worst a serious fine and maybe even a revoked licence for repeat offenders. The penalty for parking in a bike lane here is 110 to 1375 euro and a possible revoked licence for 5 days to 8 YEARS.
You bet this phenomenon has gotten extremely rare here...
Remember that you mess with someone in a bike lane and won't let them leave... you can be arrested for harassment and kidnapping....

Physically seperated bike lanes work very well, they actually make traffic move better altogether as bikes are no longer slowing cars down and people will start to use a bike more giving less congestion.

yes separated bike lanes work. Or even just painting share arrows all over town works. But making a bike only lane with no barriers is crazy. It also causes a crazy number of Right Hooks harming cyclist.

Great to see how polite most people were when confronted about parking in the bike lane. I'm from London, England, and I estimate if you did that here about 40% of people would be verbally aggressive, around 10% could get physically violent.

It's San Francisco...most people I've encountered there are very calm and social. A few aggressive NY/LA types...but probably an even nicer city compared to Seattle. I want to cycle SF again!

When people tell me theyknow it is illegal to park in a bike lane but admit doing anyway, I tell them that I know damaging other peoples property is illgal, then I kick their door with my bike shoe and ride off, wonder if they see the humour in that?

if it is a driver that i've come across doing these irresponsable things on a daily basis, he/she won't be so lucky...
i ride on heavy, OLD bicycles (i currently own 7 gazelle's built between 1938 and 1968), the brakes are in tiptop shape but i'm not always prepared to use them. i once "wrecked" the door off a bmw from a lady who swung her door open at me 3 times in less than 2 weeks, i had warned her for it. i had the choice between colliding with that door or getting in front off a bus with no room to spare...
she insisted on calling the police and for that she got a huge fine and had to pay for all the damages. the netherlands, where i live, has laws to protect cyclists from moronic motorists... ;-)
In my city it drives me nuts because the bike lane is to the right of dozens of parking spaces, so on one side of the bike lane is a sidewalk and on the other is tons of parking and people STILL park in the bike lane with empty parking.
It's not just ignoring traffic rules. They are literally playing with the lives of the cyclists they are pushing into heavy traffic.

We, here in Chicago, are dealing with it soooo much.
Especially, since bike lanes are something relatively "new" to the city.
This highlights one of the many problems with riding at the edge of the road, including bike lanes. I would probably avoid these bike lanes for several reasons. They are putting you in danger by being in a door zone as well as posing a pull-out risk from parked motor vehicles. This street is the wrong kind of street to have bike lanes on it.
It could be the right street for bike lanes, if only the bike lanes were designed correctly. Which, as you point on, they are not.

I can't imagine a design that would work for this environment. There are too many businesses, driveways, pedestrians moving about, on-street parking etc, It also appears to be a lower speed street. Just using the general travel lane would be the safest bet here.

Using the general travel lane is the best way to ensure that small children and your grandma will never be able to cycle around town safely.
Without going into detail: Swith the car parking/loading zones with the cycle lane.
(side walk - bike lane - parking - road, in that order)
Best to have a narrow walking space (the width of a car door) between the parking and cycle lane and if needed use some space from the road to realise it.

If I lived in San Francisco, my car would stay in the garage most of the time. It's difficult to ride a bicycle there, but it's even more difficult to drive. There's just no point.

Bicycle is my only transportation, but this makes me want to buy a car and drive in the bike lane just to piss off these authoritative annoying virtue signaling bike lane nazis.

A valve stem remover would fix the problem. Takes a few seconds and causes no damage to the vehicle. You could easily hit the rear passenger tire before the driver cleared the front seat.
I don't have it in me to tell people how to live their lives when riding my bike. Not worth my time. I will always just go around the damn car and you, and make sure that I look both ways so as to not get hit and hold up the flow of traffic behind me. My hometown, San Francisco, has become more violent In the last 2 years that you can never know who's liable to just snap and potentially hurt you for telling them to move their car. Just sayin'! Just let people be and stop obstructing my bike lane, whether you're in a car or not. Just go around, you'll get there. Ride safe!

The problem also is that you have parking after bikeline and not the other way around, it doesnt creat a protected nikelane in this way, is just extra conflict.
Thank you for helping to clear the bike lanes! Also, I was told by Santa Monica PD that there is 'no violation' to parking in a bike lane. Hard to believe, but you can cite them for distance from the curb, double parking, or any other offense that fits. That law is long overdue for a rework.
The first time I had an accident while in SF wasn't from cars parking in bike lane. It was the train track, my tires got caught in one and I flew 50 ft.
You need to learn how to cycle in a town when there are train or tram tracks. Regards from Zurich, a city with tons of tram tracks.
Problem is that it does not matter, people are always going to break some rules like these.
Drive against traffic for just the 1 street, park in a no parking allowed zone, Drive to fast, etc etc etc.
People are frustrated as they cannot find the place and think "lets break the rule just this time".
People have trouble finding parking spot, fuck just this time I will put it on the bike lane and quickly come back. No matter how much trouble you make, you cannot compete with the ease to break the rule just this one time. And yes I think the majority will not be frequent offenders. Better facilities are required.

What kind of emergency is it? It's a deep sigh emergency.
The only way to get this properly enforced, is to make it a tow away zone... then everyone with a recovery permit, will keep it clear for you.

I hate them standing in bike lanes as well. But face it, if there is no bike lane, cars can just stop anywhere for loading, just like in the old days.
Now we have bike lane with only painting but no barrier, so cars would still interpret that as a space for standing. Unless tickets are enforced like speeding or running the red, drivers won't take it seriously.

You realize that the US is one of the deadliest places in the world for cyclists? Part of that is that the infrastructure that cyclists have as it is is already pretty shitty to nonexistent, and part of that is that dickheads like this force bikes to join with high speed motor traffic which, if you haven't gotten the memo by now, is lethal for cyclists.

Even though i like idea of stopxam i cant tell that i agree 100% with this...firstly imo theese bike lanes are not very clevery placed as they should be next to the sidewalk because cars are for example only stopping for a while and then going back to traffic (not minding the fact that actual trend is to make as mamy bike lanes as possible no matter if they are needed or clevery placed )and secondly i dont think that changing lane (because of obstacle - like car ) is big deal...in the end bikes are part of traffic ,right ? ;) (nope im not from us)

You're right that the bike lanes are poorly placed. So much so that in many cases they can actually be more dangerous than having no bike lane at all. But there are many cyclists who don't have the skill level to bike with traffic, and when they are using a bike lane and forced out of it into traffic, it can be very dangerous.
It is also dangerous because cars pulling into the bike lanes can hit cyclists (as in our previous video, see here: czcams.com/video/JJKg2zWV8nU/video.htmlm48s). So until the city builds safer, protected bike lanes or the police enforce traffic laws which make it illegal to block bike lanes, we will ride to get cars out the bike lane.
Those drivers are so dociale, they go without trouble. I'd love to have the same in France :)

I doubt road raged French drivers pull guns on cyclists like they do in the US. It's becoming a hot button issue in some US states.
What would happen if you ride into the car?
By riding into/collided a stopped car the cyclist would be at fault if there was any damage, even if the car was stopped/park illegally.
Have you guys ever watched the "stop a douchebag" campaign? They have stickers they plaster on cars that pull stuff like this. But I like that you guys just hand out paper, to protect yourself as well. I really appreciated the guy's acknowledgement that he did something wrong.

Awesome video and awesome work. I know most of us WANT to see you put stickers on cars, a la Stop A Douchebag, but this is NOT Russia and, as you have mentioned in other responses, Americans and American law enforcement do not react well when their personal property is damaged (or just touched).
Although most of us appreciate the urge to go ballistic on these incredibly selfish people who park in bike lanes, I think you are giving yourselves--and all cyclists--good names by acting calm, polite, and doing exactly what you are doing. Screaming, fighting, and flying off the handle--while making you/us feel good for a few minutes--would ultimately be a huge disservice to your own movement.
I'm from Los Angeles so I am not too familiar with the San Francisco LEO culture/community, but have you ever considered alerting local LEO that you will be "patrolling" on a certain day/time and to have an officer number, ready to call, to ticket these goons? It would seem to be a mutually beneficial collaboration: the police generate revenue for the city (which a cynical person might say is their only/true job) and you win by making the bike lane safer.
In any event, KUDOS TO YOU, and please keep up your peaceful activities. While I enjoy other (international) groups that do similar work albeit much more aggressive/confrontational, I think you have the high ground through how you conduct yourselves and it is entirely appropriate behavior..
Thank you for the comment! Our police here tend to have an anti-cyclist bias, and they often refuse to enforce the law on parked (motionless) vehicles, saying that's the responsibility of Parking Enforcement (non-police) officers. You can see us calling parking enforcement in the video, but they take 20-30 minutes to arrive, so the violators are long gone by then. Also, parking enforcement focuses the vast majority of their time on street sweeping and parking permits violations, not violations that actually put people's safety at risk.
But I hope that we can make a name for ourselves and earn a reputation that would allow us to request an enforcement escort one day to actually ticket everyone that we encounter. Knowing this city, that seems unlikely to actually happen, but we can dream.

I'd suggest investing in a paintball gun and liberally hit all the windows.
To be fair clearer signage is needed but there will always be assholes so enforcement is needed. Perhaps some motorbike justice of smashing something might start to make a difference?

We could with something similar here in the U.K (Can't speak for other countries maybe they can agree or not or already have a system that is very effective anyway). As I travel as much as I can by bycicle. I do come across some VERY SELFISH drivers parked on cycle lanes. ( ESPECIALLY!!! in a certain area not too far from me ). This causes me to swerve out into mainstream traffic suddenly. 😲 They are parked in this peticular cycle lane so they CANNOT BE ARSED walking a few yards or so to collect their child from school. I understand it can be very DANGEROUS to try cross roads. But, this act of BLATEN SELFISHNESS has got to STOP!!! 🙅😡👎 & my so called local M.P shows no interest in my problem amongst other things I have tried to get across. But, why do we have a so government if they are clearly NOT!!! interested in solving problems except their selfish own. 😡😠🙅😤

While it is great what you're doing, I do have to wonder what brainlets thought the horizontal stripes on the bike lane were a good idea. They basically whisper "PARK HERE".
Two more parts of the equation are missing: 1) actual protected bike lanes that are not a painted line on the road between high speed traffic and the door zone of parked cars, and 2) actual enforcement so that people learn to respect the painted bike gutters that really can't be replaced by proper bike infrastructure.

I admire what they are doing but it's a hopeless battle. It does make for interesting footage though. Entitled drivers will not care and will continue to park in bike lanes. The easy way to fix this is to have a website where people can upload videos to the police along with license plates and faces so the police can send them a fine in the mail. If they don't pay it they have to appear in court.

Man, I’m a cyclist but this just seems overkill. It makes cyclists seem entitled and like the owners of the road. I understand the drivers situation as it may be impossible or not worth the time to find a parking spot only to buy like a bag of chips at a store or something.

Just drive by with a can of spray paint....don't ask them to move, they should already know the law......spray all the cars......I think I'm going to do that this weekend, slashed tires or spray paint? That is the question....
