Defender Of The West: Episode 2
The Phantom's might was spread far beyond the walls of the Western world, being the ultimate measure of peace in the Asian region. Most Korean pilots attribute the arrival of the Phantom to being one of the many reasons North Korea hadn't dared to fight them, so they kept this legendary aircraft in service all the way up until June 7, 2024. Japan also had its own fleet of Phantoms, license-built F-4EJs from the Mitsubishi company with a later modernization package coming in the late 80s to F-4EJ Kai where they flew in service with the JASDF until 2019. A specialized air wing known as the Air Division Test Wing (ADTW) kept their Phantoms for another 2 years, seeing them retired in 2021. Australia, while not officially an operator of the Phantom, had a small fleet of F-4Es on lease until the arrival of the F-111C, but all of them would be returned to the United States where a majority would become F-4G Wild Weasels that fought in Operation Desert Storm. Overall, the Phantom has been a staple in the defense of the Pacific regions, seeing decades of service and protecting the Phree World.

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is arguably (yes, I'm biased) one of the best aircraft to be born out of the Cold War era. Being exported to almost every continent around the world, the Phantom saw a lot of action after its birth in the early 1960s. While there wasn't a lot of action in the European Theater (luckily), the Phantom was operated by the British until the early 90s, Spain in 20...

Throughout its history, the Soviet Union was committed to making the best and most capable aircraft to dominate the Western world, which especially came into light with the rise of the Cold War. Because of this desire to be better, this led the Russians to create rather interesting design concepts if you ask me and unfortunately, not all of them were able to see the light that is a service life...

It has even been confirmed that the Viggen is the only aircraft to have radar locked and caught up to a damaged SR-71 flying at extremely high speeds, just sh...

@@Midsix Awww thank you so much for the kind words, you don't realize how much I appreciate it! I'm glad you enjoy my content and can't wait to see what the future holds 😊
You really have to wonder what the likes of Antonov, Mikoyan, and Korolev could have achieved in the West without the limitations placed upon them in the Russian-dominated Soviet bloc.
@@jamesharding3459 Oh most definitely. You look at any aircraft from the Eastern bloc and the only thing I believe was truly standing in their way was the corrupt governments ruling over them. If you are interested, I'd look up some of the designs coming out of Yugoslavia 🙂
@@phantom_phlyer4 Agreed. The Soviets had some extremely talented engineers, but the system and culture prevented fully exploring their potential and investing in the foundational industries and sectors to realize them. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Korolev was one of the most gifted astronautical engineers of all time, definitely an equal to Goddard.
@@jamesharding3459 Tbh, those names don't sound familiar to me, I'll have to do some research on em
@@phantom_phlyer4 Sergei Korolev was the chief designer of practically every Soviet space project until his death in 1966. An evolution of one of his designs, the Soyuz, is still used today. Robert Goddard was an American rocket scientist during the earliest days of rocketry, and one of the pioneers of rocketry in general. Among other things, he pioneered functional liquid fueled engines and his work would be scaled up with minimal modification in the German V2 (Von Braun was nowhere near as innovative as some people will tell you), and derivations of his engine designs were used in early Soviet designs by Korolev like the R7 and Proton, and would even be the basis of several excellent American designs such as the F1 as used aboard Saturn V. Basically, they are both what the fanboys of Warner Von Braun think he was.

Still ranks as one of the best low-level strike platforms ever fielded… and an absolute delight to fly in DCS. Just smart enough to take the worst of the heads-down work off the pilot, not smart enough to do everything for the pilot.
Maybe it's my American-ism, but I struggled to use her in DCS (using a trial), but I will say she is an absolutely beautiful aircraft esthetically speaking
@@phantom_phlyer4The CK-37 computer definitely takes getting used to, but once you start to understand how it functions and the limitations of it, it’s remarkably easy to put ordinance on target. Out of curiosity, what was your biggest sticking point on it? I’ve been running the Viggen as my go-to platform for a while now and understand how to get the most out of her, and I would be glad to help you past whatever hurdle you hit.
@@patricksawyer9779 While I don't own the plane (used it for a trial), for me it was the lack of straightforward-ness of operating the different A2G weapon systems that you would find in an American or Russian aircraft as the knobs seemed quite confusing with labeling and there were some other things about it I don't remember, but that was the main one
Not even gonna lie, this is one of the first edits in probably ages where I out loud said "wow, both the concept and execution of this was really good" Also, the ending part had me wheezing for like five minutes lmfao
Thank you so much for the kind words, it's amazing to hear your feedback. When I was deciding what I wanted to do for an edit, this random memory from a few years ago of my friend singing this song immediately made me think of FLIR/Drones/Targeting Pods. As for the ending, it was a clip I found and felt like a good mood lighten-er in comparison to what I originally had in its place haha

excellent work as always, I'm just annoyed, I was gonna use this song in a video but you did it already.

And it all started with the trusty old phantom
One could argue that the Fritz X used by Germany in WW2 was the real origin point for precision ordnance, but the Phantom definitely had her hand in making it possible

I really love the F111. Just a beautiful Plane and a game changer in Metal Storm. I really wish more Nations, including mine (Germany) had purchased the Aardvark, because she not only proved to be very effective in the Wars in which she was involviert, but also very versatile, which is something currently few Aircrafts are.
well at least we got the Tornado as a sort of european cousin of the F-111 and F-14. i saw one of them fly a few days ago at ILA2024. kind of crazy to think it's already 50 years old and the 111 is another 10 years older. the amount of time between the aardvark and the invention of flight is about the same as the time between the aardvark and today now.
