One Bass Line You NEED TO LEARN (Tutorial)
#electricbass #bassguitar #basslesson
Hey guys, in todays video we will be discussing a very simple R & B bass line that can have a big impact on your bass playing. I learned a bass line similar to this from the Kanye West song "Devil in a New Dress" when I was about 15 years old. It stuck with me and over time I heard remnants of this bass line and similar lines in so many different songs and jams.
Learning one bass line such as this can help you in many ways...
1. It is a multi piece bass line with a lot going on
2. It can give you something to lean on in a jam session or even a writing session when ideating a song.
3. It will help finger dexterity and hand strength.
4. It helps view the fretboard in a vertical sense and horizontal perspective.
5. It can help you hear the details between all of the scales you have learned and practiced so far - combining them into one bass line that is much more practical and fun to play.
I hope you all enjoy learning this bass line as much as I did - please let me know your thoughts down below in the comments.
As always I really appreciate you stopping by and checking out the channel.

Love your channel! Are you planning to do a gig video? Like a day in the life of a gigging musician.
Thanks so much! I honestly haven’t had a lot of gigs this year but that is a great idea so when I play next I’ll definitely try to document it!
Love this. Im at the start of my bass journey. This gives so much potential for just jam around and get going. Learning the motes and scales .. massive thanks!
Happy to hear this! Thanks so much for watching - happy it can help!!

This is nice, but I find that fret hand muting like Rocco did to produce better tone.
Yeah that style is really cool and effective - maybe I’ll do a video on that technique as well, thanks for stopping by!

Great video! Please tell us about your great looking jazz bass! Is the neck edgeless?
Thanks for watching! Maybe I’ll talk about it one day haha - it’s a pretty basic Mexican Jazz - but man has it served me well
At 8:46 you are identifying the notes in your scale exercise and they are not correct. The scale degrees should be 1, flatted 7th, 4 and 5. Wanted to clarify so beginners are not confused as to location of scale degrees in the arpeggio. Otherwise nice lesson.
Good catch, my mistake! Appreciate you commenting - thank you for watching.
Diggin' your channel, just found it a couple of days ago! I played the saxophone all through school, I just never understood the theory. Now 30yrs later, I'm trying the bass. Your videos are absolutely game changing for me. Now I just gotta learn all the notes. Lol! Thanks for all you do!
Hey thanks so much for the comment that means alot really - I used to play sax in elementary school as well - similar situation for me the theory just never really stuck. With consistent work, bass can become this really cool foundation for your understanding of theory - I’ve found it’s a nice instrument to learn theory on! Happy you are getting something out of the videos, more on the way!

Real Nice Bro !! Are those drum tracks available somewhere to riff over ? Thanks
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the video! @@carmeeno Awesome ! Thanks Carmeeno 👊🏽
Small suggestion…? Item 2 you were presumably demonstrating the effect of empty space. It would be helpful to stop talking a moment to be able to hear what you are demonstrating. Good video overall.
Thanks for watching - noted, I appreciate the feedback
Is it wise to use the piano bass lines for bass guitar?
Yeah that will work! To me bass is bass regardless of which instrument is playing the line - some instruments of course have their own particular strengths and the bass lines may change due to that but piano bass lines are definitely transferable to bass guitar
Нужно просто сыграть сначала и параллельно показать табы. И все. И просмотров будет больше. А так вы разговариваете, что неинтересно. И еще в начале сыграли незначительный кусочек.
Subcribed !!! How about a lesson on practice with a metronome ?
Thanks so much! Love it - anything in particular with playing to metronome? Lmk
@@carmeeno something basic. Using the metronome to improve timing and groove. TY for looking at my suggestion.
Love the idea - lookout for the topic sometime in the future - thanks again 🙏🏼
Just picked up the bass at 65 years old. Having lots of fun with it.
That’s excellent to hear! Thanks for stopping by the channel - How is your progress going so far??
@@carmeeno My only struggle is spreading my fingers far enough to use my pinky. So I just don't use it. I am only playing on the first four frets right now and practicing scales. I learned a few Rolling Stones songs and some Who. But I am no Geddy Lee or Les Claypool yet.
I too struggle with strength in my pinky - working on playing four frets at a time and utilizing your four fretting fingers properly is a great thing to practice every day. It can help build strength in not only the finger that is currently fretting the note but the other 3 as well. I am thinking of doing a video on it because it is something I still deal with
@@carmeeno It would be great to see a video. Thanks!
I've heard somewhere "make music when you are practicing music", and I think that is at the heart of this lesson.
I couldn't agree more - and what a good quote. It has to be practical, real music for your brain to believe it I think!
Such a great story!
Dude very helpful seen so many videos of different people but you exponential make more sense 🤔🤘🏼✊🏼🇵🇷😶🍺
Thank you very much that means a lot! I am just trying to keep things simple and explain in a normal way - take the intimidation and complexity out of some of this stuff.
Carmine u the man bro!
Thanks for stopping by John Bon!
I just found your channel and I want to let you know that it's perfect! As a new bass player, I was looking for someone who could deconstruct the bass and explain bass playing in a simple way. Kudos and keep up these excellent videos!
Thank you very much, that means a lot. I am just trying to do my best and deliver simple information that can help new players - I am really happy it is working for you! Thanks for letting me know
Those flying fingers, tho...
Ya know that’s a good topic for a video - something I’m still working on myself, thanks for watching
More out-of-the-box practice tips that I wish I had know starting out (and still use now). Bonus tip is sooo important too - guitarists and keyboardists seem to get all of the glory on the songwriting front because that's part of their learning process moreso than bass players. I hope more bassists take your advice to heart. Great stuff!
Thanks so much for the comment! Happy you’re getting something out of these - yeah bassists are so important to the harmonic structure of the song, don’t ever let them forget it! Haha
Don't rely on any quick way. Don't learn anything "*FAST*" because that's not how things really work... Sure you can getting some basic chops down quickly, but you'll become disappointed so incredibly fast once you've made those first baby steps.... And thát is when you want to persevere. It's akin to human interest / interaction: Any musical instrument that appeals to you, is absolutely worth the time and effort you take to get to know it. But hey, if you're lacking all sorts of motivation to learn something musical, you can always do Rap 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I appreciate your sentiment here and thank you for watching - my goal with this video is more so to get a new player playing effectively quickly - but I do agree with your comment
Great lesson, Carmine. Thank you! Looking forward to the Minor Pentatonic!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate you - minor pentatonic should be coming in next couple of weeks 🙏🏼

Hey great video on M pentatonic ill definitely put in to practice. One question since I'm new to bass not sure how to use scale degrees is there a difference with intervals
Thanks for watching - glad you got something from it! Can you specify your question a bit - I don't think I fully understand - lmk, I would love to help
@@carmeeno I guess my question is. What's the difference between scale degrees and intervals?
@@ccastillo36540 ahh gotcha - I look at an Interval as the distance or harmonic relationship between two notes, and a scale degree being a note in relation to the key or root note of that scale. So there is a way you could look at them as the same thing, not too different from one another but if Im looking at it like "Im playing an A Major Pentatonic Scale" I'm thinking of A as the Root note or 1 - B as the second scale degree or 2 - and C# as the third scale degree or 3 - as an interval that C# would be called a Major 3rd. Does that make sense?
I see what you're saying it makes sense I. Guess an interval is something you could do up-and-down the whole neck and a degree is something you could use within the scale. More or less
@@ccastillo36540 definitely- the scale degrees can be looked at pertaining to the specific scale - and even tho both can be moved around to fit any scale or key or chord etc. interval specifies a particular harmony where scale degree just means what degree away from the root note of the scale it is
Thanks very helpful ❤🍺🇵🇷✊🏼🤘🏼🤫
Absolutely thanks for stopping by and watching
My fav scale no lie 😂😂
It’s up there for me too
