Here are 5 helpful tips when teaching yourself bass, or any new instrument.
They are very simple concepts in theory, but when applied consistently to your routine you should see yourself improve very quickly.
I am very passionate about playing bass, but for many years I was self taught, until I eventually studied at Berklee College of Music. With many years and so much trial and error under my belt, I learned if I could do just a few things better while learning, the process could be so much easier.
Developing a consistent practice routine and learning songs you like is vital to the early stages of your journey. It is so important to be engaged while learning.
It is always a work in progress and takes time to get your feel right on any instrument.
Keeping things simple and understanding the function of the bass guitar took me years to understand. I always tried to play the bass as though it were a guitar - not realizing the importance of its function.
I hope these ideas help you take that next step in your bass journey - please let me know if you enjoy this content, I go back and forth every day deciding if I should make more and I would love to find the right audience who finds this information helpful.
Thanks, hope you have a great day.

There's some excellent wisdom here that I wish I knew when starting on bass. Your advice regarding "micro practice" is spot-on. I know too many people who started on an instrument and wouldn't touch the thing unless they had an hour to devote at a time, which hardly ever happened, so they eventually gave up. "you just have to be funky!" , love it!

I appreciate you taking the time to watch and I’m glad you could get something from it! We are all so busy, taking a little bit of time to play is the best thing you can do for yourself!! Stay funky 🙏🏼

Now attempting to start learning how to play and observing you is totally encouraging and want to learn a lot!!!!!!! Starting on the fretboard with the notes!!!!! I have five degrees but I am a complete infant in this new musical world :-) I am beginning to study the notes and have purchased a couple of basses/ I am intimidated at this point!!!

Thanks for watching and for your comment! I hope my videos can help in any way - remember to keep things really simple especially early on in the process. I spent a lot of time just focusing on feel and touch in the beginning - if you ever get frustrated learning notes, scales and songs try to pull things back and focus on feel.

Really cool video man, also lately I've been pushing myself with learning music theory and all that type of stuff.

Thanks for watching! I think that’s great, as long as you can apply that theory to stuff you like and have it help your playing it’s totally worth it
