Around 1980 my band opened for Phil in San Francisco. We played a burning set and got a lot applause. Then Phil's band came on and he was so exciting that within five minutes, people were standing up and screaming.

A friend of mine in nyc was put in charge of hiring a jazz band for some art gallery event at the last minute. He did not know anything about jazz at all and asked around. Someone he knew said their jazz band could play, he said sure. The band arrived and started playing at the set time, but he said they seemed to be taking forever to tune up or something. After a while he asked one of the musicians when are you guys going to actually start playing? The musician said we were playing the whole time. That was his introduction to free jazz which he didn't know existed. He said the art crowd people all left the music room pretty quickly.

I was at an event where Cyrus and Betty Carter first met. She was speaking and answering questions. Cyrus was a student at Berklee. Some people asked her to please sing and she asked if there was a piano player that could accompany her. Some shouts for Cyrus could be heard. So he sat down, and someone suggested “Body and Soul”. She asked if he could play “ Body and Soul” in G. (I think it was G.) He said he could, and she was so pleased that he didn’t hesitate about transposing. Then, for a few minutes she discussed the importance of being able to transpose, and versatility, etc. So, they performed a beautiful rendition of Body and Soul together. After she looked at him with such love. Then she concluded her time on stage, and as she exited, she lead him off the side of the stage with her rather than allowing him to return to his seat. Some years later, I learned he had become her regular accompanist. It was nice seeing this historical meeting. It just shows you that it’s true that success is when preparation meets opportunity.

Remembering the great Harold Mabern on the day of his birthday in 2024. I last saw him at the Half Note jazz club in Athens, Greece, in 2016. During the show, he dazzled the audience with his musicianship, he played everything from jazz standards, low-down Delta Blues (where he also sang with a great blues voice), to Earth, Wind & Fire's Fantasy, a great arrangement of his (to be found on one of his personal albums). After the show, I saw him sitting at the bar and went to shake hands with this great musician and tell him I was a lifelong fan. His humility and kindness startled me. We ended up scat singing Wes Montgomery lines from his tour in Europe with Wes back in the 60s when I told him I know all these performances by heart, I kid you not. Such a great musician and human being, may he rest in peace.

He was a nice gentleman. I met him, or rather recognized and acknowledged him, at my mother’s nursing home. He was to himself and very dignified. I didn’t bug him too much, and he was very gracious.
