Shop Update: The Shop of Theseus!
It has been a while since I gave a shop update and I have been quite busy. I've upgraded my electrical panel, replaced my window, framed in over half the shop ceiling, re-skinned my sliding door, filled two gaping holes, and used up an entire pallet of foam insulation board (which didn't go as far as I thought it would).

Is This the King of Cutters?

It's my favorite time of year again, when I can do something silly, unnecessary, and dare I say, just plain stupid, all for the sake of edutainment. This video was inspired by a former employer who told me he had a dream that I was machining everything with a Woodruff key cutter. It's always refreshing when someone's subconscious mind thinks you're a moron. Still reading the description? Tell m...

My old roommate and I once had insulation which was too thick to fit behind some drywall. With no money left for the project whatsoever, we did the only thing we could. The insulation was mashed behind the drywall and a screw was used every inch or so in order to hold everything in place without the insulation blowing the drywall clear off the wall. A contractor happened to come over before everything was patched or painted ( a process which took years). He wanted to know where we obtained a fully automatic drywall screw gun with a cyclitic rate of 1,200 screws per minute. In regard to the video at hand... Wow. That's a lot of work. You guys have made some great headway. I can't imagine how much beer and pizza you've gone through with all the friends coming over to help out. I can't wait for the rust inhibitor test and the deburring tools video. I've been doing some welding in my garage and upping my deburring game would be ideal. My fitup could use some work still.

As an apprentice, I was taught to use the half included angle via the top slide and we only had hand ground HSS tooling. The Old Boy turner in the repair shop showed me how to put the cut on with the cross slide, but to advance the top slide (set parallel to the work) a couple of thousandths every cut, to mimic the angled infeed cut and reduce the load on the tool and that's how I've cut all my simple threads since the 70's.

  • @dretras6195

Interesting. Back in the 80s the detail boys at our autobody shop would quit and someone would have to take over RustCheck TM duties. Drill holes and basically soak vehicles with a long pressurized wand with oily pink RustCheck. We had a concrete walled pit out back for that. I did a few. Later my daily drivers to school and work the next few decades were Datsun 510s and they needed help so i bought cans of RustCheck and soaked them down occasionally. It would dry up but it helped keep rust at bay. In YVR. Now i have a daily 99 4Runner and it's showing some signs of rust underneath and that's how i arrived here. It will get hot soon and id like to blast the bottom with the pressure washer, let it dry and do some spraying of something after it dries out. I could get out the undercoating gun and do that but undercoating also seals in inside moisture from condensation and leaks. Oils let your vehicles breath a bit. So... Should i try LPS3? Fluid Film whatever that is? Or RustCheck (next fall becaue it drys out fast)? Dew point and general solvent/oil evaporation is a huge part of this Entrumpy corrosion problem.

For turning between centers 4:52, what if the 3 jaw chuck holding the dead center has some error, e.g., 0.2 mm? I think the dead center is then off center and the piece starts to turn around another point instead of the center drilled point (probably leading to a taper). Am I correct or did I miss something?
