Taking UnWind to Pieces: Shusterman's YA Dystopia Nightmare
At long last! My longest ever video and review, at a meaty 40k. A book series with so, so, so much to talk about. Only a couple deeply embarrassing mispronunciations. I really do try. Yet always, always, I betray myself.
We're so back babeyyyy.

    I feel like they could have covered a lot of those plot holes by going more sci fi. The animals we took died on the way over, heres some time and disaster to make people cool with it. Also feels like the weirder gore points are the author trying to cover as many "this is a sadistic thing we do to animals" points as possible without thinking about why they happen or what ramifications it would have

      No, it's not, as much as aster says otherwise. The movie rights were sold, which is extremely common and normal and NOT a guarantee it'll ever be made into a movie. Movie rights are typically sold at the same time book publishing rights are sold, and again, many many book contracts include movie rights and never are made into movies. Lightlark isn't popular or good enough or particularly well suited to film lol

OH btw what that first one of the ten commandments those christians stole from us again? 1:16:10 I've been putting these videos on in the background and this is now the second one I'm commenting on (I didn't plan this, I just didn't expect to have thoughts) and this is sadly not outdated because it's still extremely commonly used this way on the internet. I was in a community that used the word "schizo" this way non-stop and called conspiracy posts "schizoposting" (this was this year, 2024) and it was super common. So yeah, terrible usage, but in a lot of ways we really haven't changed much since then, people still make jokes like these a lot :( ok edit as i watch: this may seem nitpicky but suicide baiting does NOT mean someone threatening suicide, it means trying to get someone to commit suicide (baiting them into it)

    Not only is El Tigre just Spanish for "the tiger", it's also the name of a cartoon show about a kid with superpowers who shares the titular name. Meaning, every time this book mentions worshipping a god called "El Tigre", I just pictured them worshipping a small, superpowered, Mexican child in a cat costume.

  • @julietrosner1680
    @julietrosner1680 Před 7 dny

    You only got one thing wrong in this video. It is not, in fact, easier to get away with darker subjects in YA today. Because of a lot of factors (the massive literacy crisis facing teenagers right now, internet culture and its crossover with book marketing, the rise of right-wing ideology in schools and book bannings, etc). YA authors are actually being heavily censored by their editors and publishing houses. Fewer YA books are being published and those that are are being stripped of darkness and conflict to such a degree that many authors feel it has become detrimental to the quality of the genre as a whole, or at least that's what I've heard from the YA authors I work with as a bookseller. It's also becoming not uncommon for books that were originally published as YA to be re-marketed as adult series because they include or allude to sex, or because the author goes on to write adult novels afterward, such as in the case of the Throne of Glass series. I highly recommended looking into the scholastic book fair controversy that happened this past year as well, if you haven't already.

      Also, it would be so cool if you would consider making a video about Angel Burn by L. A. Weatherly (even though it might not be as interesting as the Unwind series)

    • @Crowcaller
      @Crowcaller Před 7 dny

      I think it's complicated and kinda both at once. Overall, I think YA now IS a lot looser on mature subjects, explicit politics, and indeed sexual content. There has also been (especially in USA) a heightened pushback against YA featuring ideas of social justice (anything lgbt, or racism esp) and sexual content (of any kind or detail). We definitely have both, and I think it's related to traditional publishing vs indie, and especially tiktok spice culture. Indie spicy books are doing mad well, and are sold as adult bc... adult content, but often written (and appeal to!) YA. They're read by a lot of YA seeking youths too. Traditional publishing sees this and many YA books are following suite but still tread a line (SEE: LIGHTLARK). (It's worth saying my main knowledge base and experience is solely in genre fiction, not contemporary.) Conservatives hear about spice, and get in arms about it in traditional pub and places, even though it lives online. (Though it's tbh more the imagined culture war stuff that spice is included in than sexually explicit content on its own) That's my too long thoughts!

    Wow I see myself a lot in the Rewinds. Their speech and Dirk's inner thoughts remind me so much of myself and especially what happens to me when I dissociate or have breakdowns. Even their concept itself I relate to in a way, especially as an autistic person. How you try to be a "good human" and piece together yourself from other bits of people and social expectations, to the extent where you don't truly know who you are anymore. And what I went through as a teenager, repressing myself instead of being "cringe" or "too much", made it so much worse, and only as an adult did I begin to unlearn that. And even now I still barely have an actual distinct personality, or at least awareness of one, the real one, the eccentric child I was, still hidden deep inside me and only rarely peaking through. The concept of this series really interests me, for all the series' flaws, I'll probably pick up at least the first book! I wish that the exploration of what wild body horror experiments someone might do in this world we see in UnNatural Selection was given a better chance and not wrapped up in racism, I think it could be really interesting.

When Angel got kidnapped a 2nd time by the end of Angel, I was annoyed due to it being a moment of "didn't we already go through this in the first book?" When Nevermore happened, my love for the series was wavering, but when Forever happened and I finished reading it, all my fanhood of the series was drained permanently. I just couldn't get and read the "sequel" series that follows Max's daughter, so I kinda want to keep whatever cringe that series brings.

    No exaggeration I cried when you described the dream Missy had. It was so simple and achievable....but her life was still horribly and abruptly cut off. What's worse is Ella didn’t credit her for making the world a better place...Ella was still the front and center/the star when she smashed the folder under her foot publicly and had a rockstar style public kiss with her love. I feel like throwing up. This was injustice to the highest degree to a beautiful soul that rightfully grew bitter after everything she witnessed/experienced. RIP, Missy.

    Holy fucking shit the climax was all just to kill off Missy? Even John survived the blast?! That is infuriating af. I would have ALMOST excused the mess this series was based on what you've said if Ella redeemed herself with a self sacrifice/not getting a happy ending. But noooo god forbid we have that (not being able to enjoy the sunset with the hot male love interest in some exotic place) in a YA book.

I know someone who shows them. Gorgeous creatures, but so much hair!! Their coat feels really velvety because it's so dense, but because of that thick coat, they shed a ton of fur. Which is why I will admire them from afar.

Is this supposed to be some sort of fucked up miracle (since neph always die in childbirth), or did the author forget that plot point? Part of me wants to believe she just forgot, except Anna and Kaiden have a ton of sex but adopt all of their children because Kaiden was sterilized. I met Neal in 2011/12, i was in 7th grade and was a fan of his lighter books like "the shwa was here". Anyway idk what i was expecting in terms of the guys personality but i walked away feeling so down. He seemed so depressed, or maybe he was just extremely tired idk either way it was soul sucking. i have seen a few authors in person speaking about their books and the vibe he had while doing it was just so different, like he didn't want to be there or be talking about his books or any books at all. i was excited to speak with him after, but when i spoke to him he didn't even really look at me lol everyone was giving their personal stories with the book so i thought I'd add my experience with Neal himself. He's a Lil Debbie Downer

    "Christians, you are valid", yes, full agreement and expanded to all reglions from me, an atheist. I'd go up to the barricades to protect your freedom to chose whatever religion you want. If it makes you happy, yes, go for it, please for the love of your god, do so. But please, give me the same courtesy and accept my unwillingness to follow your particular creed over the hundreds other beliefs. ALso, who is all Christianity? Sorry, but Christians have been at war with one another for about as long as with other religions, not to mention the hundreds Christian religions who even contradict one another.
