Tilling in compost and then planting Bloody Butcher and Japanese White Hulless Popcorn transplants in the Upper Garden. BCS 853 with 30 inch rear tine tiller and Stand 'n Plant XL . Major back saver! New camera, forgot to turn the mic on for the last bit. Still figuring it out. Thanks for watching!
Forming Raised Beds in the Upper Garden with BCS 853, Rotary Plow, and Rear-tine Tiller
zhlédnutí 2,4KPřed 4 lety
In this video I show the process I used to form our raised beds in our "Upper Garden". First, I tilled in our buckwheat cover crop. Second, I used the rotary plow to make raised beds. Then I fertilized and used the rear-tine tiller to incorporate it and flatten the beds. Finally, we started planted but the camera ran out of juice. Our garden this year will consist of mostly heirloom root crops ...

Sowing Buckwheat as a Cover Crop
zhlédnutí 140Před 4 lety
Sowing buckwheat in our garden as a short-season cover crop before its incorporation, forming of raised beds, and planting main crops for the 2020 season. I used a simple hand spreader to sow the buckwheat and my "spring-tine harrow" (lawn mower dethatcher) behind the BCS 853 to cover it.
BCS 30" Rear-Tine Tiller on a BCS 853
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 4 lety
Preparing the garden for cover crop seed by tilling the soil with the BCS Rear-Tine Tiller. The Rotary Plow did a great job at breaking up compacted areas and plowing deep into the soil but many clods and uneven areas remained. The Rear-Tine Tiller minces those clods into a fine, workable structure that will be easier to plant into and work. It was a windy day and my lightweight tripod fell ove...
How to Use a Hoop Hoe
zhlédnutí 698Před 4 lety
Hoop hoes are one of the most useful hand tools in the garden. They are easy to use and can do some pretty precise work after you have some practice with them. I have used hoop hoes to kill weeds in extremely compacted soils, it is tough work. They really shine in well-prepared soils.
Berta Swivel Rotary Plow on BCS 853

Preparing the garden for 2020 planting. I also used a dethatcher as a spring tine harrow to smooth out irregularities.
Gas Can Upgrade
zhlédnutí 46Před 4 lety
Topping off the BCS 853 fuel tank, checking the oil, and upgrading a silly gas can spout to a simpler design. All that needs to be done is to drill a 1/2" hole for the vent, push in the vent (takes some effort), and screw on the new spout.
TPost Puller

Demonstrating the T-post puller. Pulling some trellis netting and T-posts from the garden to prepare for 2020 planting season. The T-post puller pays for itself almost immediately if you have a lot of posts to remove on your property.

    Hey one question, can you go around the tree with this rotary plow. I want to go around olive tree with it. But I want to know if you can before I buy it

    Do you need to pick the weeds up or is just uprooting them like this sufficient? Thanks for the video, I've been scraping too much soil off I think.

      I find that just uprooting or cutting the roots is enough, but for some weeds like purslane I'll flip them over. You can do that with a little flick of your wrist with some practice. That way the bottom of the plant is exposed to sunlight, will dessicate faster, and less likely to reroot.

    I’ve never used a BCD but they seem pretty good. Are you happy with it! Seems to do a good job. Take care!

    Soil looks great, tiller working good, looks cumbersome at turns 1& 2.

    Great vid! You make it look so easy working with the slope. Do the yellow flags indicate the center of the bed? I have a BCS with the Groundblaster rotary plow and I'm struggling to achieve 30" wide raised beds. They keep coming out too wide.

    • @mattroth7743
      @mattroth7743 Před 3 lety

      The flags were points to aim for when I initially made the raised beds. I placed them about 30" apart with 6-ish inches in between for walkways. I think it's important to be meticulous in the beginning but now I just guesstimate when I re-form the raised beds with the rotary plow and the tiller flattens everything into nice, appropriately sized beds. The tiller makes everything look nice, flat, and uniform, and gives the tilth I'm looking for.

      Don’t have any result videos but the buckwheat did well. Got busy with kids and career change and stopped making videos. I have some buckwheat seed left and got a seeder so I’ll try to do a video about that and other projects in 2021.

    Would it be easier for you to start in the center so you wouldn't have to keep adjusting the handle bars?

    Great video! How heavy is that T post puller? Would you be about to attach that wood base to the bottom to prevent having to bend over every time you need to move?

    • @mattroth7743
      @mattroth7743 Před 4 lety

      Travis Roth Its not very heavy, maybe 10 lbs. I just had the wood there because the soil was a bit damp and I wanted to spread the pressure of the puller on the ground. You could definitely drill some holes in the base and attach something to it.
