How to Use a Hoop Hoe

Hoop hoes are one of the most useful hand tools in the garden. They are easy to use and can do some pretty precise work after you have some practice with them. I have used hoop hoes to kill weeds in extremely compacted soils, it is tough work. They really shine in well-prepared soils.

Do you need to pick the weeds up or is just uprooting them like this sufficient? Thanks for the video, I've been scraping too much soil off I think.

I find that just uprooting or cutting the roots is enough, but for some weeds like purslane I'll flip them over. You can do that with a little flick of your wrist with some practice. That way the bottom of the plant is exposed to sunlight, will dessicate faster, and less likely to reroot.
